Apple Cider Posted February 25, 2015 I was about to ask how you find a podcast Co host and then realised how that made me sound like a sad little 10 year old boy. I literally went onto Twitter and asked "hey would anyone be interested in starting a WoW and feminism podcast" and that's when Tzufit stepped up and said yes, we didn't know eachother very well at the time. But honestly, go with someone you have similar interests with or can bounce off of really well. Podcast hosts with no chemistry is like listening to nails on a chalkboard. So, picking a friend that you know has the same interests as you isn't a bad bet.
Twig Posted February 25, 2015 Don't worry about it! I'm slouching towards an anime podcast myself, sometime in the far-off future, so every bit of craft to which I get exposed will probably help in the end. Not if I get there first!
Apple Cider Posted February 25, 2015 Why don't you two do a podcast together?

The editing and both being busy is what slayed our attempt. I love that you two just met on Twitter. Now I wanna hear how that first episode sounded.

Apple Cider Posted February 25, 2015 Yeah, when I had a brief 5/6 episode run of a podcast that is what I did with a good friend. The editing and both being busy is what slayed our attempt. I love that you two just met on Twitter. Now I wanna hear how that first episode sounded. Well we had talked to eachother a tiny bit on Twitter, I think. We were both WoW bloggers at that juncture, but I had no idea she was super into feminism at the time. Yeah, it was pretty wild.
clyde Posted February 26, 2015 Apparently Simogo is making a podcast/radio-play related to The Sailor's Dream.
clyde Posted February 26, 2015 We are enjoying making a podcast and a few people have said that they like it. I think that the lack of an RSS feed is probably an inconvenience to our listeners (I'm currently putting the mp3 files up on my dropbox). If anyone has advice about taking our podcast to the next level (an RSS feed and possibly inexpensive hosting) I'd appreciate it.
JonCole Posted February 26, 2015 I believe you could just use Tumblr to make a subscribe-able RSS pointing to the files hosted on Dropbox. That said, Dropbox has bandwidth limitations but I guess you'd not have to worry about those unless your podcast got moderately popular. There's always Libsyn if you want to pay for hosting, which would certainly make things as minimally complicated as possible.
Apple Cider Posted February 26, 2015 I use Safeshark Hosting for all of my sites, he charges 14/month (which is slightly higher but the service he provides is pretty top shelf) or 12/month if you pay for a year.
Patrick R Posted February 26, 2015 Libsyn is the service I use, it's pretty cool. Until your back catalog gets really big hosting is fairly cheap and it automatically tracks a bunch of stats.
clyde Posted February 26, 2015 Libsyn is the service I use, it's pretty cool. Until your back catalog gets really big hosting is fairly cheap and it automatically tracks a bunch of stats. I thought that the LibSyn worked like this: If you have a 100mb/month plan you can upload 100mb one month then 100mb the next month, but the first month's data remains downloadable. Wouldn't this be great for keeping your backlog available? Or am I misunderstanding something.
Patrick R Posted February 26, 2015 Well my podcasting partner Jim handles all the back end stuff, so I can't give you all the details, but we've been podcasting 2+ hour shows for 4 years and some time last year we reached the point where we had so much backlog we had to pay more per month to keep every episode available on iTunes. But I don't deal with the back-end, so I'd have to consult Jim for the details.

Like, I've never used the service, but I remember from MBMBAM being on Libsyn that their RSS feed would only show the last 100 episodes. So when they were at episode 150, the RSS only included 51-150, and you had to go scrounge up the original posts for episodes 1-50.

A friend of mine has used LibSyn for many years now and he says that the above is pretty much how it works. Unless you want to change the amount of data you're allowed each month, the rate should be the same. If you want to increase, or decrease for that matter, the amount of data you're allowed you are charged an extra fee on top of the new monthly rate. I asked him about the backlog, but he was not aware of any extra fees for having many episodes. Of course there's a chance that his podcast never released quite as many episodes as Patrick's. I found this, but I'm not sure if it would still be helpful (or if it would ever be helpful, I don't know what MBMBAM is or what your involvement was with it).https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6493736 -------- I'm tempted to use Amazon S3 because I can't imagine our podcast getting very popular. I have no idea how many people are listening to it, but I would guess it's around 5-10. I'm reading some of the tutorials about how to set up a podcast through Amazon S3. I'm guessing that it will just take me a while to figure it out for the first couple of episodes then it will be cheap and easy unless someone famous mentions us. Plus since they host anything and it's scalable, this might be a service I end up using later on for whatever my next hobby is.

MBMBAM is the McElroy brothers' comedy advice podcast, which I'm only associated with in that I listen to it. I'm just saying that I remember when I first started listening and eventually decided to go grab the back catalog, I had to go find the original posts on Libsyn, because the weird 100 episode limit meant that they were no longer on the RSS and so I had to get them manually instead of just having my podcatcher grab them. Merus Posted March 4, 2015 So I decided to audition some new podcasts: Comedy Film Nerds - one my housemate really likes this, but I guess I caught it at a bad time because it didn't do much for me. It's not particularly comedic (they're comedians, but they're not performing and not trying to be funny) and it's not particularly nerdy either, with fairly surface-level analysis of the films. Maybe it's just because the movies recently have had very little to say about them, but I'm not heartened by one of them being offended by Kingsman's supposed anti-Americanism. I wouldn't mind a good movie podcast but I don't think this is it. Justice Points - our own Apple Cider's podcast, which is still in audition because the episodes are hella long but first impression is that it seems actually really good. I really hope it's not just because the first half of the episode I listened to was unusually strong. I like podcasts with room for silliness and really substantial discussion in the same cast, and it seems like the hosts are experts at setting up rapport with their guests and warming them up, so when the episode starts they're ready to go and making jokes about what names they gave to their guns in Counter-Strike or describing things as 'twee as fuck' or telling bizarre stories about virtual luxury sports cars, even though they're starting with the dreaded 'what have you been playing'. The hosts seem like they have good instincts for follow-up questions, as well, which is encouraging, and it seems like the guests are free to ask the hosts questions? A lot of guest-focused podcasts have problems where the quality is dependent on what the guests bring to the table, and I'm curious to see if Justice Points bucks that trend because of the looseness of the format. Anyway, rooting for this one.
Apple Cider Posted March 4, 2015 We've gotten better with guest format over time, our earlier episodes in the general format weren't as strong. And yeah, we try to tailor things to what guests want to talk about, so we also do a bit of research on guests. We also just invite our pals onto the show. Thank you for the review. Edit: Neither myself nor Tzufit had any idea that the "what are you playing" was a typical question.
JonCole Posted March 4, 2015 I believe "What'cha been playing" was a gaming podcast trope thing that started with 1UP Yours back in the day.

syntheticgerbil Posted March 6, 2015 I don't imagine anyone here is a Henry Rollins fan, but just in case I'm posting this here. Old man Rollins has finally gotten a tad bit more modern as his manager Heidi has made him start a new podcast. I love the banter between these two. I don't know if the podcast will be interesting to anyone not familiar with Rollins Band or Black Flag, probably not, but it's a lot of fun in the odd mess of a person Rollins is plus Heidi May who really doesn't care about his moodiness or hangups and instead makes fun of him. miffy495 Posted March 6, 2015 Why the hell would anyone not be a Henry Rollins fan? The man is rad as hell. Gonna check it out.
Bjorn Posted March 6, 2015 I didn't like Rollins for years, mostly because I knew some super fried stoners in high school who fucking idolized him, and any conversation about music with them would immediately be turned to Rollins, "Did you know, that like, Rollins, is like, single handedly responsible for like every good thing in music since like the early 80s." :fart: :fart: So yeah, I couldn't think of Rollins without thinking of those guys for years. Then someone drug me to one of his spoken word gigs, and that was a lot of fun and I've thought he was cool since.
Irishjohn Posted March 6, 2015 I saw him in Manchester in.... 2005 I think? He was pretty great. And we'll always have drunken rock outs yelling "I'm a liar!" like an idiot. Well, I'll have them. In my memory.
