I doubt PAX would even let you in with any kind of spring loaded thing.  I once had an idea for a Full Metal Alchemist cosplay that involved a fake arm with a spring loaded blade that I could unleash by clapping my hands together, but I realized I'd never make it into a convention.

The bigger the con is, the more careful they are about stuff like that. I still remember back in 2004 at my first anime convention, when the security surrounded me and escorted me to the weapons-check booth in order to get my giant cross cleared. Note that they didn't ask about possible contents or try to open it up, they just wanted their head of security to give the okay on a six-foot PVC cross wrapped in cloth, which its six-foot two, hundred and fifty-pound bearer could scarcely carry. It was deadly serious.

For reference, the cross looked like this:

I mean, he has got a reason to cause concern, because that cross (in the anime) is full of weapons, as well as being a huge dock-off weapon itself. All it means is that the security guard knows his anime.

Although seriously, swinging that thing could probably cause some serious pain if it's made out of anything harder than cardboard, so I guess I understand their concern.

Well if anything happened, it'd be their cross to bear.

[Previously, on "Hermie's life": 2 years ago I ended up in a situation where I had to either let my long-distance girlfriend get away, or abandon my friends and everything else and move to another country with her. I chose my girlfriend, packed my bags, and moved from Norway to Sweden. We've ended up kinda lonely, and have been trying to find an opportunity to move back to Norway.]

Yesterday I finally got the chance I'm waiting for. I've gone to two interviews for a really cool job in Oslo, and I got the formal job offer on friday. But while waiting for this, I got a tip that a position was opening up in the Oslo office of my current job. I called the boss there on friday, and he basically said "Well, everyone in the group appreciate you and think you would be the person that would best fit in with them." The pay and benefits is around the same as the external job.

So now history repeats itself, I have to make ANOTHER grand binary choice with a short deadline and a bunch of unknowns that could shape my future. Still not convinced my life isn't run by Ed Harris with a headset and turtleneck.

The external job is to be the publisher/curator of the streaming service of a cable provider. I would pick the highlights for the front page, publish news to the website and facebook, write summaries, and so on. As I have a film degree this speaks to me a lot, but they have a very mainstream focus, so I'm slightly nervous that the day-to-day can end up feeling soulless or have too much administration stuff.

The internal job is similar, but for an electronics retailer, publishing products like computers, accessories and video games with their product text and images. But it also includes setting the prices every day, to make sure they are matching the competitors, and also planning and ordering the products to the online shop and to the stores. So it's more number-crunching, which I don't particularly care for, but it's within a framework where I already know everyone and the products, systems and whatnot. In addition, I'm sitting on a bunch of frustrations from 2 years of customer service, and would finally be in a position to change things.

So do I choose the new shiny job, that might be really cool, but could also be a let-down in the long run? In a new, giant company where I don't know anyone? Or do I choose the small office where I know everyone and get along with them, but where the tasks themselves are a little less appealing?

I'll of course try to negotiate a bit back and forth to see if any of them would actually up the salary to secure me, but I'm terrified of doing so in case I go too far.

This is of course a way better choice than the one I had to make two years ago, but it's still a conundrum with no clear solution, that will vastly affect how the next couple of years of my life will look like.

So in regards to this, I ended up going with the new and shiny job. It sounds more fun, pays better, and will also mark a new start in my life.

Ironically, it looks like my girlfriend, who works for the same company as me, but a different brand, might be able to continue her current work from Oslo while they find a good replacement, so I will still see the people in the office I declined working at.

I'm excited. More specifically, I'm excited for that first day when everything is moved in, settled, bureaucracy tackled, and we can sit down in the couch of a new apartment and start a new life.

So while I'm not exactly the happiest person when it comes to family, my brother got his hearing aids today at long last, and they work and I'm happy for him.

It isn't necessarily a general-volume thing. He's actually lost the ability to hear things at particular frequencies / pitches (though there is some general muting). He's spent the better part of 10, 11 years like this, with it getting worse over time. The doctors told him with the aids it'll take him a couple years to kinda get familiar hearing particular words again since it's been so long (the brain is a funny thing). Also, the batteries only last for 10 days (when you account for 8 hours for sleep-time on each of those days) so that may be a bit of a bitch to get through financially. But it's store-bought stuff and my brother figures he won't use the aids ALL the time.

At any rate it's a resolution that was a long time coming, and two years late due to certain family members bailing on their collective promise to help fund the whole thing. Leave it to Medical to solve things where my family couldn't!

So I have TV service now because it was mandatory as part of the fibreop package and I've been checking it out now and then as sort of a novelty. ...What the hell is with TV? I haven't watched TV since 2008 and I feel so out of the loop. There's commercials everywhere and they're all super surreal and repeat five times within half an hour, all of the educational channels are filled with shows where people buy garbage and then sell it again, and I've completely forgotten what it's like to not know when anything is on. It's so weird.

I'm almost exclusively watching Teletoon Retro on the increasingly rare occasion that I turn it on, and expect that to remain the case until I get bored in a week.

EDIT: oh, and all these shows have been cropped and stretched to fit a 16:9 display on top of being compressed for air, so everything that's not an HD channel looks terrible.

Shit.

So the new job I got two weeks ago is going pretty well, but there is a technicality. On Monday, the board emailed me a contract to sign. I printed it out and signed it and thought I was done. Turns out, there is an extra "confirm acceptance on our convoluted online system" step that I didn't know about. This expired this morning, and I discovered it about 8 hours after it expired. As a result, I can't accept it now and I don't know if I have a job right now despite having put in two weeks of work there. I've emailed my principal to try and figure this out, so we'll see. I'm quickly running out of money, so I need this to work out like, now. Whee!

I might have found a potential artistic job! I'll need to put together some portfolio pieces though, and I dunno how it pays (though there is a checkbox for full-time availability). I won't get into it, but I'd be basically getting paid for something I already do for free and would almost certainly lead to commissions.

Chances are I'd still have to take a shitty part-time job or change apartments though; I dunno.

Also, my birthday's comin' up! It's in early November. I think I'm gonna buy myself something nice if I have a job by then. If anyone wants to do me a solid, I have an amazon wishlist that I continuously update. I've been hesitating on whether I should post it again or not, but a few people here helped me out last year with birthday and Christmas stuff since these forums are kind of the closest thing I have to family and friends. I think I'm okay with doing it again just so long as nobody feels obligated? I don't know.

I'm posting this from a moving car on I-79 on my way to a 6 month Doctor's appointment (I'm not driving so no need to worry (about that at least)...my Mom has the same allergist in Pittsburgh and its a 2 hour drive so we always make our appointments on the same day and car pool down there to save gas). Since its rare that I'm able to use the internet like this from a car (and I only got a data plan back in 2013), it always blows my mind that I have internet like this on the go...it's like the future! I'm going past Fairmont, WV now.

Edit: made corrections...I'm typing on a tablet so its hard to type in a moving vehicle. Going past Morgantown now.

Yesterday, I finally got internet in my new apartment!

This morning, I woke up, and it wasn't working. Resetting the router didn't work. Etc. Bleh. Bleh.

It is... going. I might have more to say later when I'm not at work.

Suffice it to say, for now, I am settling.

Today was my first day on the job, and they decided to give me full-time for this week. No idea if that applies as a "from here on permanently" thing. But I'll say this; I haven't had full-time hours for a job since early 2009. I'd cry from joy, but really I'm just relieved.

Ethical quandary time:

I'm currently unemployed and have been looking for a job unsuccessfully for the past 3 weeks. The money that I have saved up will only last me until mid-October. Recently I went to a job fair for all of the Whole Foods in the city. Today the hiring manager who interviewed me called and said that they like me, but that the only position open in the city is in a meat department. The problem is that it's in a meat department at Whole Foods... and I'm vegan.

Working there would be agonizing mentally, emotionally, and ethically but I really need a source of income. My room mate is urging me to go after the job, but I'm having severe doubts about it. I need to call the guy back by today to let him know. So far, this is the only place that has even responded to me, so I feel like there's a good chance I might not find anything else before my money runs out.

Actually, as I type this it's becoming more clear to me that I can't take that job. Oh well, time to get back out there and lower my standards.

Gonna be honest and say that I think you should take the job but also keep applying at other places.

Also, maybe tell the hiring manager about you being vegan?
