Nick Posted June 16, 2006 Also, my friend insists that the USA team is good and ranked no. 5, but you certainly wouldn't know it from the C.R. game. The US are definately ranked somewhere in the top 10 I know that much. The reason for this, however, is that it's based on points from winning matches and the US team beat a load of crap teams. So on paper they are in the top 10. Having said that I don't think that the US team is that bad this year. Also England are playing a bit shite, so I don't have that much faith in them to win this year.
n0wak Posted June 16, 2006 Yes. The FIFA World rankings are deeply flawed. I don't follow the game much beyond the world cup, but it's plainly obvious. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIFA_World_Rankings The Elo rankings seem a lot more accurate http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elo_football_rating
netmonkey Posted June 16, 2006 It's like that here, except that there are about 32 different flags being waved all over the place. Mostly on cars. See them side by side with other nations. Sometimes on the same car (saw an Argentina + Portugal mix yesterday, as well as an Italian+English). And it's fun to go down to Little Portugal to celebrate their win one day, and then go a couple blocks east to Little Italy to celebrate their win, and then a few blocks west to the Polish area to get depressed and drunk Then I talked with the local shopkeep about Korea's chances in the group now that France has tied. It's kinda fun, but likely because it isn't so oversaturated here.Especially since we suck at football, so all the multicultural aspects of this country get to cheer for their nations for a month. But when Canada is playing a major hockey tournament, everyone is Canadian. (almost) Crazy, it's the same in my home country, Venezuela, because our team has yet to make it. Maybe next time. But I didn't know the Canadians were crazy about football.
miffy495 Posted June 17, 2006 We're not typically, but because it's really hard to find a Canadian identity that ISN'T hockey, when there's another tournament going on everyone goes crazy for the country that their family is from. I suddenly become Australian (not really a good thing to be around World Cup time, but whatever) while my friends are Italian, Dutch, Irish, German, British, etc. Trust me though, for tomorrow night's Edmonton vs Carolina hockey game, we'll all be Canadian again. Roderick Posted June 26, 2006 Ahhh, finally I can take off my sunglasses on the streets again, because all that pestering orange is gone. Gone like magic. I tell you, yesterday evening I respectfully stayed quiet so as not to offend the downtrodden, misguided wretches who were sobbing in front of their tv's, but now I can safely say I'm glad that it's all over again. manny_c44 Posted June 28, 2006 Europeans should be grateful for World Cup, every sport in America has been designed from the ground up to focus on advertising, a 48 minute basketball game can drag on for 3 hours depending on how many people are watching. To actually get two uninterrupted halves, 45+ minutes each, is unheard of in the US. I never bothered with football before this world cup but I actually find it pretty entertaining, at least when teams aren't nursing a lead.
elmuerte Posted June 28, 2006 just because it's worse over there doesn't mean it is bad here too. at least you can easily switch to an other channel that doesn't have the same crap
n0wak Posted June 29, 2006 Europeans should be grateful for World Cup, every sport in America has been designed from the ground up to focus on advertising Unlike European football, which has team jerseys with fucking VODAFONE (amongst other completely non-jersey related brands) emblazoned on them. miffy495 Posted June 29, 2006 Hell, hockey jerseys all have Nike, CCM, or whatever company logos on 'em too. Doesn't mean the game isn't great.

NFL games that go out at 2am can drag on a good 6 hours; watching at a reasonable hour and skipping all the ad/challenge/break crap makes for a pretty entertaining 80/90 minutes

When VODAFONE spreads across the shirt bigger than any team crest or even the player's name, then you have an issue... especially when all the knobs buy up the overpriced jerseys and then parade them around town. Nick Posted July 1, 2006 asdpibf;kjvxcv I don't believe it. England played a superb game, they played much better than portugal. No denying that ref was bias, just because he was bitter his country went out. If only we weren't so shit at penalties. I'm very disappointed, we deserved to win that. Nappi Posted July 1, 2006 I'm not a fan of Portugal, heck, I don't even watch football, but I'm quite happy that they won. I will go to Azores on Monday, and I imagine the locals will be pretty cheerful because of the victory. At least until Wednesday..
Erik Posted July 3, 2006 At least until Wednesday.. Damn right, this brutal team has to stop. I feel so sorry for England. Truly they deserved that victory for dominating Portugal while shorthanded for an hour. England-France would have been a great game.
Duncan Posted July 9, 2006 I have absolutely no interest in the World Cup yet FOR SOME REASON I decided to watch the last fifteen minutes of the game, which turned out to be the last hour of the game. Fucking soccer.
Moosferatu Posted July 10, 2006 You should have watched the game yesterday. It was much more entertaining.

MrChlorophyll Posted July 10, 2006 I watched about five minutes of the last game and in those five minutes I saw a goal post shot go in, someone slam his face into another players head, and a knee-knee collision that would have snapped the leg in half had it been from the side and not head on. I figured I should stop watching while I still felt entertained.
brkl Posted July 10, 2006 I watched the Italy-Germany game and enjoyed that one guy jumping on an opposing team's player's back knee first.
