Wizard Jam - Idle Thumbs Game Jam Interest Gauge / Chit Chat corner

I think I would actually prefer a theme. It might actually make it a lot easier for me to come up with something other than the stuff I'm working on now. And yeah, I would like to participate too!

Pssst seriously though, programmers. I can pixel/paint pretty damn fast just keep me 100 feet away from any IDE

I agree that a theme would be good. I've suggested this before, but I think "dumb game ideas made up on the podcast" would be a good theme.

Ideas:

1) Cool Cool Game

2) Rich Uncle vs Cool Uncle: like Lemmings or a reverse Tower Defense where you need to guide....lets say.... a Puffin through some kind of maze, and to navigate obstacles you place gifts from one of the uncles, but the "energy" to place an Uncle's Gift is only generated by placing  AND USING a Gift from the opposite Uncle.

Yeah a theme would be cool. Also would love to give it a go, roughly when would this be occurring?

As for input about barriers, I find creating textures to be the worst and longest part of the whole process. getting animations made and transferred from blender to unity is a close second.

Allright this thread kinda blew up today while I've been catching up with folks in town for PAX east; if anyone has suggestions for a good set of dates, that'd be a great thing to hear! I was thinking sometime around mid april, but my schedule is also a little more open than most folks since I'm hell of unemployed right now so I don't have strong feelings about timing. Also yes, I do like having a theme to give you somewhere to start, so if people have suggestions, please leave them in this thread! I have no idea how folks pick themes for other jams.

This might not be helpful, but I figured I'd offer it.

Thanks for offering! I honestly don't even know enough about it to tell you if this would be helpful to me, but I imagine it might, like poking around in Twine files other people shared with me to see how they did a particular bit of formatting.

Other things:

Date: The only input I can offer is that I have a uni break coming up from March 30th to April 12th, if that's a good time for anybody else, and will be away from April 22nd to April 25th for A MAZE.

Theme: A Wizard Jam that's not about wizards, at least as one option among others, sounds disappointing to me.

March 30th through April 12th would be good for me too. I got a bit overwhelmed by creative commitments last week and some breathing room between it and another binge would be helpful.

I'll third this idea.

I misread that as suggesting the theme "A wizard jam that's not about wizards"

If we're going in that direction, I'd probably suggest "A wizard jam about wizards who are not really wizards" instead.

i installed the suggested free personal Unity 5 software last night and am interested in this endeavor.  The install wizard is the extent experience with the software and programming.

Although i would consider myself Advanced in Photoshop and extremely proficient in vector based software - so anyone can reach out to me with those questions

the 30th -> 12th works for me as well, gives 2wks to start thinking up some ideas, forget them, and then start again

I'm interested in doing this, but I don't know how to make games and will likely be busy moving soon.

I'd sort of like to start after Easter since I know I'll be busy with family obligations and I imagine some others will be too, so I'm gonna pitch April 10th to the 24th?

People seem to like themes, I'll try and keep it vague so folks don't feel restricted but also somehow keep it Thumbs related. Diversifiers are fun too, and good jumping off points so I'll compile some from old jams and also take suggestions. Both of those will be optional I think? Something else I thought of is that jams sometimes have voting and competitive elements; I think that's sorta counter to the learning focus of this, so probably none of that.

Also, thanks to the folks who have expressed interest in helping others out :)

Wizards plus diversifiers seems like a cool way to go. We could call the diversifiers "schools of magic". I agree with you about the voting thing Dino, except I thought that we could have one of the votes be for rewarding the inexperienced trying something new, it would of course be called, "Hooray for You!".

Guys, I've been thinking about my ideal Thumbs-themed game.

It is the near future of 1997. This is Neo York.

*the camera pans from the sky down as a helicopter flies past the Statue of Liberty, now equipped with a giant futuristic eyepiece. Standing on the shore looking out toward the statue, Steve "H0T_5C00P5" Gaynor touches his NFC-enabled cyberlighter to his ecig and takes a long drag*

"It's time to put an end to the tyranny of Lord Remo."

I am behind tegan's idea, it already has my vote for winner.

Should we make a list of people willing to take on a certain role? I could volunteer to pixel art, program, write, help teach thingies. I'll volunteer as a wild card I guess, alternatively I'll just make my own game.

Second. Could have Dinosaurs edit the original post with willing participants and their stuff.

I'm willing to do art, teach or use gamemaker, and be of general use art/programming advice.

This is an extremely cool idea!

Depending on the timing, I'd be interesting in helping out a bit, with teaching/support/general cheerleading. Maybe I could even make a thing!

And also - a possibility I'd love to explore is streaming some of the finished games on the thumbs twitch channel after the jam.

Ideas!

I have no idea what I could do but I would love to be involved in some way. I don't know how much time I could commit either between a big courseload and free time being spent training my team for the upcoming Australian competitive NS2 league.

I might just watch from the sidelines and playtest. :) At the least I could probably talk about game feel; although improvement suggestions would probably help mostly with later projects than current ones. That's just my guess anyway.

I just want to make a goofy game that anyone at any skill level can contribute whatever they want to.

For those of you who don't know how to or what to contribute, just show up during the jam and post that you want something to do even if you have nothing specific in mind (or if you do).
