"Ethics and Journalistic Integrity"

Recommended Posts

I heard about that primarily when Randi Harper linked to this comment (copied from reddit):

The thing that pisses me off the most about this is now there's a precedent of a person being doxxed and harassed off the internet by detractors which will cause females to start thinking twice about not only being supportive of GG, but it'll also prevent them from becoming as outspoken and creative as Lizzy has out of fear of drawing too much attention to themselves and becoming the next victim.

Gaters gonna gate.

What do you guys enjoy about Kill Screen? Generally when I've read it in the past, I've felt like I came away worse informed than I went in, confused, and annoyed by writing that seems to define pretentiousness. I tried really hard, because I'd heard such good things, but it felt like someone reaching for quality while being mangled in a mulcher.

Edit: I apologize, it's fairly off topic to the actual core of the thread.

Sympathies for me are largely a holdover from the magazine days. They were a bit ahead of the curve on that, launched the first issue through a Kickstarter back in 2009. All those have been treasure troves of good writing, but they're not really focusing on that any more between hosting their own little conference and doing more website stuff.

They still run a lot of interesting features though, and are pretty good about reporting on weird and cool games. I appreciate the mix I get from there anyway.

I saw that.  I would say it's jaw dropping in the hypocrisy department, but no, it's actually exactly what I expect now.

Also, hilariously, KiA is currently crowing about how an anime porn game is performing better than Gone Home.  You're telling me that something pornographic on the Internet is more popular than a touching coming of age story?  Holy shit!

Just wait 'til the Gone Home: Director's Cut is finished.

They're comparing sales numbers for a new release to numbers for a game that's been out a couple of years? Holy shit some porn game is outselling Secret of Mana, this is an outrage!

Technically I came here to get away from that, but taking another sideways glance at the Escapist forums after news of the layoffs there really left me itching to talk about what's up with that weird forum mentality.

When I still hung out there, the common consensus was that it's the only place to have intelligent conversations about games. This was almost universally accepted and frequently added as a barb to discussion of any other website: "but of course they're not as good as this one." But what you found when actually looking at the board then, and what you'll find now, are multi-page debates about which direction to wipe with toilet paper or whether it's okay to pee in the shower. Here's a group that somehow has become absolutely convinced of their own immense intelligence that they forego any genuinely challenging material and skip straight to writing fan fiction about each other (No, seriously). And of course there's a Religion and Politics board infested with people who think their lack of empathy somehow led them to a higher, more pure form of reason.

Man, what a silly thing to have ever been involved in.

It's a good thing you're here now, in the bastion of Internet safety that is the Idle Thumbs forums where we'd never discuss trivial poop related stuff.

Yeah, pretty sure our peeing-in-the-shower debate didn't stretch over into multiple pages...

Well, it's not that I mind that stuff, more the disconnect of being so super full of yourself with nothing to show for it. A very teenage mentality I guess.

I'm surprised no one posted 8chan's horrific ad that it made for itself. Not that the ad itself is surprising to anyone who's been reading this thread, but...

Why do people put so much effort into something like this, and not bother to proofread? Or get someone else to look over it?

Also, I'm super stoked for a bunch of Nazis to tell me why the world is like it is.

I fucking love that these kids think things like Deviantart and Blogger are somehow part of a newer web scene despite being older than 4chan.

All this does is make me feel old because I was a teen before social media was invented.

The Internet makes me feel old every day. And I'm not even actually old yet, dammit. In every other facet of life, I feel like a person in the prime of my life, and the Internet makes me feel like a grumpy old man yelling about hills and lawns. I was a teen before some of these fuckwits were born, a teen before most people had dumbphones. And I was on the Internet (at least occasionally, 28.8K dialed long distance FTW!).

They're comparing sales numbers for a new release to numbers for a game that's been out a couple of years? Holy shit some porn game is outselling Secret of Mana, this is an outrage!

To be fair to them, they were comparing available numbers from comparable release dates (like a week out from release or something). But it doesn't make it any less ridiculous.

Gross as always of course, but it's not terribly surprising to see another history rewrite from GG, in which their opponents somehow turn out to be kids and not grown-ass game developers and critics. It is super weird to think about the process that goes into something like that though. I mean, look at the absurd platitudes they use to describe their champions opposite the weirdly specific insults. "Taught us to be creative" could be applied to any site on there really, but somehow it becomes about a lack of originality later on.

Slashdot taught me the iPod has no wireless, has less space than the Nomad, and is therefore lame.

It may be because I only read threads in relatively enlightened subportions of SA, but I'm saddened to see it tarred by association like this.

I'm sure this has come up in the thread before but uh, that they're literally just using a swastika as one of their logos now is uh... yeah... okay.

It's obviously just proof of how inviting anonymous, uncensored free speech is to all people.  Because nothing says welcome to the party like a Nazi.

I believe you meant anonomous free speech, Bjorn. You've wrecklessly been using correct spelling, you cog in the machine, you.
