Nachimir Posted June 10, 2014 I find for me those tend to actively diverge from any purposes in the game though (Such as, flying to the edge of the galaxy and getting my ship blown up as part of quitting Eve). My take on it is if they can take Proteus and put even a smigeon of mechanics in there, they've got a winner. All I want is to explore beautiful landscapes with a hint of purpose. So what you're saying is you want Proteus with guns?
BigJKO Posted June 10, 2014 I find for me those tend to actively diverge from any purposes in the game though (Such as, flying to the edge of the galaxy and getting my ship blown up as part of quitting Eve). This is why I hope there's no explicit purpose to No Man's Sky, no over-arching mission structure or something like that. Maybe some optional introductory stuff, of course. But let us play/explore the game the way we want to!
Griddlelol Posted June 10, 2014 I'm not sure if I agree. I hate when I get into a game and it basically says "ok, have fun!" . Minecraft is the most obvious one. I just quit immediately because I don't know where to go or why I should bother. Ok so I have a ship, I can fly to random worlds. I'll see a few then think that I've basically seen all the mechanics and dump the game like yesterday's jam. I would rather something like Don't Starve, where the goal is pretty explicit, but how you go about it is entirely up to you. Not sure what goal they could have, maybe "get resources to buy a bigger/faster/shootier space ship" would be an obvious one, but I feel like I need direction at first or I'll never bother. tegan Posted June 10, 2014 I'll see a few then think that I've basically seen all the mechanics and dump the game like yesterday's jam. Actually, you know, that doesn't really work as a thing, 'cause jam lasts for ages Also: why the fuck would you bring up Vib Ribbon twice and then go nowhere with it? You know how these things go, Sony. You don't mention a game by name, much less show it onstage, unless it's coming back in some way. Also also: I might get a Playstation TV. BigJKO Posted June 10, 2014 The goal of the game does seem to be find resources to upgrade your ship, aside from exploring and marking new planets/species/etc. But "find resources to upgrade/build things" is basically the goal of MineCraft and you didn't like that.. I'm sure there'll be something optional to guide you around at the start, but I'm just saying I don't want the entire game to have objectives/missions, etc. Because in the end, I want to make up my own missions/narrative. clyde Posted June 10, 2014 I have an idea for the next Mass Effect game. A free-to-play multiplayer game within which you can buy individual, not chronologically dependent, single-player vignettes. Then when some characters eventually resonate more than others, Bioware could make a full campaigns with them.
Griddlelol Posted June 10, 2014 But "find resources to upgrade/build things" is basically the goal of MineCraft and you didn't like that.. Not entirely. Building a better ship means you could tailor yourself to be a pirate or a viligante or even a big game hunter, as you said, making your own narrative. Minecraft seemed to be about building things that didn't really affect how the game played. Just making weird pointless structures. Still, the game looks cool, but I'm not massively excited for it like everyone else. I'll be waiting for the finished product.
Roderick Posted June 10, 2014 I find for me those tend to actively diverge from any purposes in the game though (Such as, flying to the edge of the galaxy and getting my ship blown up as part of quitting Eve). So what you're saying is you want Proteus with guns? You complete me! I hope the main gist will be exploration (non-mechanics-driven save for the 'this animal was discovered by X!' achievement) and resource collection. The less guns and shooting, the better. We already know there'll be guns on the space ship, but the problem with guns is that when you've got a palladium cartridge in your automatic cyber-rifle, everything looks like a space-nail. Twig Posted June 10, 2014 Also: why the fuck would you bring up Vib Ribbon twice and then go nowhere with it? You know how these things go, Sony. You don't mention a game by name, much less show it onstage, unless it's coming back in some way. God that was fucking hilarious. We were all like "there's no way they're going to bring it up twice and not do anything with it", and then they brought it up twice and didn't do anything with it. I wouldn't be unsurprised if either a) this was an awkward attempt to gauge interest in a revival or they already have the revival ready and just wanted to awkwardly tease it before revealing it at a later date. melmer Posted June 10, 2014 Ive just finished watching the Sony conference and HOLY SHIT did you see Batman (apart from the lame tank section) just swooping around that city, my jaw was on the floor
Merus Posted June 10, 2014 I just quit immediately because I don't know where to go or why I should bother. This is weird because I felt like Minecraft got the balance exactly right. Your goal is basically to survive the night, and to do that you have to basically get your crafting going and find the nearest cave to get coal for torches, but there's no way to explore that cave before the sun goes down. So you get your tools together, then go into the cave with your torches and you see what you find, and as you come back out you start making more and more space for your stuff, and eventually decide that this time you're going to build this thing right and oops there goes 12 hours. Griddlelol Posted June 10, 2014 I should probably clarify that I jumped on to someone's account, in a private server...is that a thing? There seemed to be exploding trees, so I assumed it was a private server. Didn't try the main game because that experience left me deflated.

The best part is that a new Vib Ribbon would almost certainly be terrible because Sony would make you have to register a fucking Qriocity account or whatever. SecretAsianMan Posted June 10, 2014 Hate to derail the E3 train with talk of Minecraft but I feel the same way Griddlelol did. At first it was about surviving the night, but eventually that became trivial. Then it was about getting up to diamond everything, but then that became trivial. It wasn't until they added actual boss fights that I felt I had a direction and purpose but by that point I mostly lost interest. I appreciate games that have such a large degree of freedom and seeing the things people make in it, but I'm not the kind of person who's going to spend more than a few minutes playing around with that. I'd never heard of Qriocity until now. You're right, that would be terrible. Also "wouldn't be unsurprised" ugh murder my face I just did that.
dartmonkey Posted June 10, 2014 I've been flicking between sites. Having real trouble finding somewhere I like to stay for any amount of time. Where do you guys get news? Polygon is pretty much Kotaku now. Eurogamer has a pun addiction and a horrible layout. From what I've caught so far, it looks like MS were relatively successful at disguising that 2014 is lookin' pretty damn lean. Sony were a bit more successful. Nintendo are set to leverage the Metroid brand with the game we didn't know we wanted, Samus' Space Pirates Volleyball. From a distance there seem to be a lot of 2D Spelunkey lookalikes and games with an HD, Mode7-y, Starfoxy aesthetic. Pastels and polygons. Gonna sit down tmrw morning and take a closer look at everything. The only individual trailer I've seen is Sunset Overdrive. Points for CoD jokes but it really looks like a cocktail game (1 part Tony Hawk/Jet Grind to 2 parts TF2, garnish with vagina zombies). Also, Cuphead could play like a poo but they have NAILED that 20s/30s animation style. Will get.

BobbyBesar Posted June 10, 2014 Scaleborn - That trailer told me nothing about the game, but it's Platinum, so i'm probably on board. That studio simply has not made a bad game. Monster Hunter? I'm thinking Monster Hunter.
Bjorn Posted June 10, 2014 I played games instead of watching the Sony press thing last night. But looking at the summaries this morning, sounds like they had the most interesting thing, with the best surprises (Grim Fandango?!). I really thought I was more or less done with caring about consoles, but Sony is doing a fair job of convincing me a PS4 will be worth it at some point. Last gen we ended up with both a 360 and a PS3 because of exclusives. In a year or two, I could see us having a PS4 and a Wii U, skipping the Xbox completely. MarioKart 8 has just about convinced me that buying a Nintendo platform for the first time in 20 years might be worth it.
Architecture Posted June 10, 2014 "Remember Vib Ribbon? Well here's Mortal Kombat 10" will go down in history as one of the all-time classic E3 stage blunders.
melmer Posted June 10, 2014 The first thing that came to mind when i saw the Crackdown 3 CGI trailer was "doest that mean we're going to get to destroy building like in EDF" Now, Its been confirmed on twitter that this is an early build of crackdown 3 Nice! Although we don't actually see them levelling a whole building... i don't even know if its possible to make that look good? In EDF they just sink into the ground

Architecture Posted June 10, 2014 It was buried at the end of the Ubisoft conference. That game must be at least a year out, maybe two. Nothing will ever be as good as Rainbow Six 3 was, however. Nothing.
