I Had A Random Thought...

Recommended Posts

I used to get them all the time, but i've only gotten small ones more rarely in the last few years. This one is a doozy though:/ Luckily it isn't as painful as the once i get sometimes \o/

Man, that's nothing compared to the ones I get.  The worst is when I have two at once that slowly combine into a single, massive hole in my mouth.

I've always referred to those as canker sores.

Agreed. This is what I call them too. (From Illinois) However, not to be confused with cold sores.

I get crazy cave man rage whenever I hear really loud noises. People driving around in cars or motorcycles with excessively loud engines triggers it worse than anything. Like why the fuck would you purposely want to drive a vehicle that is bound to eventually make you and anyone who rides with you deaf?

I guess it's because loud noises are badass and manly? Seriously though, fuck loud noises.

Gay porn (by which I mean male on male, since most lesbian porn still tends to be produced with straight male audiences in mind) tends to have way more interesting titles and themes than straight porn and I wonder why that is and when that started.

I'm similarly confused by the necessity for parties TO HAVE THE MUSIC TURNED UP SO LOUD THAT THE ONLY WAY I CAN TALK TO ANYONE IS TO YELL AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS.  I don't mind music but unless there's a live band performing it's not the reason I'm there.

We care a lot about sex. Like, a lot a lot.

I've seen some weird videos like Vampires of Budapest from the 80s up through this weird... Cocky Boys? Video of some like bizarre wizard/immortal being training thing??? It's weird and they have weird, interesting, esoteric plots and I have no idea why.

Edit: submitted early, hahaaaaa it's late and I'm on a phone

For muscle cars at least, you can't really have them quiet, they don't work that way.  Now, a lot of people do make choices to make them even louder by choice of muffler, but it was never going to be quiet in the first place.  And that sound is one of my favorite ones in the world.  On my last muscle car, I would usually just cruise around with the radio off because I found the noise of the car itself so enjoyable.

I miss that car, a bunch.  I haven't been able to justify the cost of a car just for fun for over a decade.

I can respect that. Sorry for my strong opinion. As long as you weren't one to drive that car through a quiet neighborhood in the middle of the night then I think we're still cool.

I can understand motorcycles being loud, especially since you're harder to see on the interstate, so being heard is an asset, but the disproportionate loudness of driving through neighborhoods makes me sad.

I guess if you had the music lower it'd be drowned out by the talking, so you increase the volume until that doesn't happen. I'm more bothered by the volume at cinemas, not that I go there with any regularity, but I always think it's much too loud. Everyone has their TV insanely loud too.

Not really.

Sure, there's some marginal safety value in certain circumstances. But by and large, it's just being a jerk.

I don't think that it's actually worth spending extra $ on pipes to sound louder. I was just saying that I don't think loud motorcycles are douchey on the interstate, but definitely do feel that way about them in town. I see a lot of people on motorcycles on the interstate, and because they tend to weave in and out of traffic, I like being able to hear them over the standard road noise, but I don't by any means think it's necessary, especially if the motorcyclist drives responsibly.

I also wasn't aware that motorcyclists used this as an excuse to buy louder pipes.

So is David Letterman supposed to be some kind of a saint or something? I'm kind of baffled by all of this praise he's getting and all of these articles about how he's like the greatest late night host the world has ever seen. I've tried to watch his show multiple times and it was some of the driest and most unfunny shit I've ever seen. Plus, doesn't he have a history of sexually harassing women and sleeping with a bunch of his younger staff? A dude like that doesn't seem worthy of praise in my opinion.

He is not a saint. He did permanently change the face of comedy. Catching a couple random episodes of the Late Show does not do his career justice. He is definitely, without a doubt, the funniest late night talk show host of all time. The thing is, the late night talk show is not exactly a form that lends itself to a high ratio of outstanding content. A career like that is cumulative and, especially in the case of David Letterman, requires a viewer to put time into getting on it's wavelength.

It is unfortunate that his career never really did suffer from his history of sexual harassment. It likely would have if he were Leno and not a comedy god. But he is a comedy god. Hence the praise and forgiveness.

He may not be for you. But he was most likely a huge inspiration for everyone who made comedy you do like in the past 20 years.

I mean I'm hearing plenty of what you're saying from pretty much everyone on the internet right now but I've literally never heard any of this in the past. I've never known a single person who's watched his show, never heard anyone mention any funny things he's said or done, and never seen any YouTube clips of any of this supposed great comedy.

I'll just have to take your word for it though because obviously this is a big deal for a lot of people and maybe I've just been living under a rock. But seriously, why haven't I heard anyone singing his praises until the last week of his career?

Letterman revolutionized early listicle technology by popularizing parodying top 10 lists. He basically made Buzzfeed, but on TV and in the 80s.

His latest bits of fame have been heartfelt monologues about 9/11 and a heart bypass surgery, and for coming out as having had multiple affairs with women who worked on his show because someone was trying to blackmail him over it.

These are things I gathered from a Fresh Air interview. I don't think I ever watched a full episode of his show or really paid attention to him.

Yeah, I've never seen one of his "classic" bits, and every time I see a bit that's supposed to be good, it's ruined by how much wind-up and pausing for the audience to applaud and it just kills the pacing for me.

Again, it's a grand body of work over the course of 33 years that affected the world of comedy, not any one bit. It's his whole attitude. Television was a safe formulaic place for comedy and then Letterman came along and injected an unprecedented level of weirdness and irreverence. He mocked the concept of talk shows.

It's not everyone's cup of tea, but show me anyone else in the 80's who was doing stuff like this on network television.

He mellowed out the past 10 years, certainly, but he still had his moments of inspired madness.

You probably haven't heard it before this week because A) it's old news and B) people have been saving their big think-pieces for this week. But major comedy writers have been citing Dave as a primary influence on their work for decades now.

Has anyone tried Soylent? I'm trying to think of ways to save money on food, and I've heard about it enough that it popped into my head.

Also trying to be as insufferable as possible

I've got a coworker who started Soylent. He consumes it for breakfast and dinner, and eats lunch with us most days. I guess he's happy with it, as he got a second shipment a few days ago.

I think he told me it comes out at three bucks a meal which definitely sounds appealing to me. But then I keep buying new kitchen appliances so I can't back down now.

My furniture loves the stuff.

edit: wait, did someone really rename instant-breakfast "soylent"? That's kinda funny.

I don't know if I'd characterize it as renaming instant breakfast because the goal of Soylent is total meal replacement rather than a single meal (as one wouldn't get a full range of nutrients from three meals of instant breakfast mixes per day). But maybe to answer your actual question, yes they've named a meal replacement drink Soylent.

Is $3 a meal really that cheap? I'm sure I average more because I don't pay close attention to budgeting for cooking, but I imagine it's easier to do cheaper and not have to drink slop for every meal. To me the only benefits of Soylent are convenience and novelty.
