Yasawas Posted August 29, 2014 Am I right in thinking with an October release in Japan this will be just in time for Monster Hunter 4G? I'm almost certainly going to import one, I've nearly bought a Japanese model a few times and this will likely break my resolve. I've also read some speculation that the added stick, buttons and NFC capability make this the equal of the Wii U gamepad, be interesting to if they take advantage of this to release a cheaper model of the home console or have them interact in some way. tegan Posted August 29, 2014 The should call is the 3D-DS2. That will solve all the naming problems. They can call them the New Super 3DS Bros.
Henroid Posted August 29, 2014 That content filter for the web browser just goes to show that Nintendo are the dumbest and worst at implementing internet functionality. They really need to get on board with that crap because they get more criticism for it than they get praise. What I want to know is if the browser is an actual browser, not whatever program they have in place that deconstructs pages into images.
JonCole Posted August 29, 2014 I'm pretty sure the browser is a full webkit-based browser. I don't know if it's based on any particular end-user browser like Chrome, Safari or Opera, though.
Henroid Posted August 29, 2014 I heard elsewhere that it'll support HTML5 which means I can play NP2 from my 3DS. Potentially.
BobbyBesar Posted August 29, 2014 I think it's based on Opera. That's what the DS browser was, IIRC.
SecretAsianMan Posted August 29, 2014 I know the Wii and DS/DSi browsers were Opera based. Wikipedia says the 3DS browser is based on NetFront which uses webkit.
TheLastBaron Posted August 29, 2014 I'm glad I have Xenoblade for the Wii and never ever play my 3ds with 3d enabled or else I might be kind of bummed about this.
tegan Posted August 29, 2014 It bugs me that now I'll have to buy a new microSD card and find a use for the SD card I'm currently using for my 3DS. At least memory prices are going down, but I don't know if I even have any use for a 32GB SD card now.
Henroid Posted August 29, 2014 Such is technology. The old eventually loses worth. In the short term though it could operate as backup maybe, if you have something that takes SD and micro SD cards.
tegan Posted August 30, 2014 I'm playing Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney: Justice For All, Puzzles For Some: I can't believe this took two fucking years to localize. This is pretty good so far! I'm only about an hour in so not much has happened yet, but I'm really appreciating the presentation of it all. I get the worrying feeling that this is gonna go in very stupid directions since there seems to be straight-up magic involved though. Also, I don't like Luke's new VA.
Merus Posted August 31, 2014 I'm pretty sure Luke's 'new' VA is the one they've been using in Europe since the first game, who can actually do a kid voice instead of the raid siren they use in NA. I'm really curious to find out what people think of this, particularly a friend of mine who ragequit AA5 because you were forced to out a trans girl.
syntheticgerbil Posted September 1, 2014 It's funny, I always have liked the North American Luke since that's who I know and I've always just kind of found him lovably annoying. But I don't mind the European voice actor. One of the earlier games you could unlock the voice over comparisons with enough picarats if I recall, since I think a few others were switched for the continents as well. Trip Hazard Posted September 1, 2014 Thinking about getting a 2DS for my step-daughter, because it's absurdly cheap, and I want to play Super Mario 3D Land (my girlfriend asks if I'm really buying it for myself. No comment.) Got a few questions though, which have probably been answered in this thread already but it is a really long thread. 1) Can I download and play SNES titles from the nintendo eshop? 2) Does the mono speaker sound okay? If I plug earphones in, could I get stereo sound, or is that unpossible. Bit of a noob question, sorry 3) Is it really tough to break? Step-daughter is fairly careful but I don't trust her not to stand on it at some point Thank you!
JonCole Posted September 1, 2014 Re #1 - No, the 3DS doesn't support SNES Virtual Console games yet. Here's a list of what's supported, but it's basically all NES/GB-generation games - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Virtual_Console_games_for_Nintendo_3DS_(North_America) Re #3 - From what I know, the point most vulnerable to break on Nintendo's handhelds has been the hinge since the GBA SP. I have no personal experience with the 2DS, but I'd hazard to guess that lacking a hinge would make it very comparatively resilient.
Yasawas Posted September 1, 2014 I'd be amazed if the sound through headphones wasn't stereo. I know it was on that cheap PSP model that only had one speaker and I wouldn't be surprised if a monaural headphone socket was actually more expensive to buy these days. N1njaSquirrel Posted September 1, 2014 Re #2 - I didn't even know the 2DS sound was in mono. From a quick google, it states that plugging in headphones puts it in stereo. Re #3 - It's a nicely sturdy piece of kit. I think that the screens are the most prone thing to break, especially the bottom touch screen, which didn't feel like it was especially reinforced. I think it also comes with a case (or you can buy a case for cheap) which is a good shock absorber. certainly my 3DS XL has been dropped down one too many staircases in it's lifetime and it's survived. The biggest annoyance is that dropping it can sometimes cause the SD card to pop out, and I lose progress on my game (80% of all my games are played on the SD card for me nowadays). The 2DS will survive being stepped on I think.
tegan Posted September 1, 2014 Considering the incredible leaps of logic the Layton games take to explain away "magic," they sure are predictable. Spoilers for Layton vs Wright: I only just met Eve the cat a few in-game sentences ago. How long are they going to pretend that Eve, Mrs. Darklaw, the hooded woman in the cart, the woman at the Storyteller's appearance, and the witch aren't all the same person? (or in Eve's case, at least related in some way)
Merus Posted September 2, 2014 It's also an Ace Attorney game, and you've got nothing on her even once the characters acknowledge that boy howdy Mrs. Darklaw sure sounds suspicious.
tegan Posted September 2, 2014 An aside: That content filter for the web browser just goes to show that Nintendo are the dumbest and worst at implementing internet functionality. They really need to get on board with that crap because they get more criticism for it than they get praise. I have to imagine that this is related to the Swapnote shutdown (RIP Nikki) and the end of Flipnote Gallery: Friends; with the idea being Nintendo wanting to be able to claim less responsibility when some kid inevitably sees someone's dong and parents never ever bothering to turn on parental controls. SecretAsianMan Posted September 2, 2014 The scenario I keep imagining goes like this: Kid: Hey mom, can I buy this Pokémon game? Mom: Sure son. Use my credit card. Kid: Thanks mom. *uses card to unlock porn*
Twig Posted September 2, 2014 The dumbest thing about it all is it's not like the kids won't have internet access elsewhere. Not to mention the rampant hot hot sexting.
tegan Posted September 2, 2014 It's not about actual prevention (because you can't prevent it); it's about making enough of a token effort to be able to legally claim no liability.
lobotomy42 Posted September 2, 2014 I think you guys are being too cynical about the internet filter thing. Keeping your kids away from the seedier parts of the internet is something many parents would still like to do. The alternative would just be to remove web access entirely. I don't think content controls, even if they default to "on" and require a token credit card charge to remove, are particularly onerous.
