Actually, It's about Relocation in Games Journalism

(This thread was originally titled Patirck Klepek has left Giant Bomb)

Simultaneously surprising and expected. I always got the impression there was an unspoken tension between him and Jeff Gerstmann. I'll miss the plucky little fellow.

I saw this! I've never followed GB but I do like Klepek and follow him on twitter and stuff. He wrote for EGM when I had a subscription for it in like 2004(?). Always weirds me out because that feels like such a long time ago for me, but for an actual adult it really isn't.

Anyway, maybe he'll be a guest thumb more often??? His "Wii-U on the plane" story cracked me up.

Judging by the photos he's been tweeting of an empty studio with a bunch of microphones, it seems like he's up to some new project.

...Evil Bong the Animated Series?

I'm gonna miss the secret best duder. We can only hope the eventual GBeast hire can fill his shoes.

I think those were the new offices of Cards Against Humanity? Maybe he's getting on board with them in some capacity. His farewell said the he was definitely sticking with editorial work, but that's broad enough to be a variety of things. Good luck to him.

Really? I never noticed that.

Really? I never got that impression, not more so than between Jeff and anyone else on the site. This seems like the sort of presumption he addresses in his farewell with people who think he was ever "going rogue."

Anyway, my money's on him joining Polygon, but who knows?

I don't think tension within Giant Bomb had anything to do with it, but more Patrick wanting to do other varied things wih his life (even within games/writing about games, but who knows what else? not me) while he has the chance.

Klepek's never struck me as the sort of guy who's comfortable hanging around in one place for too long.

I've always felt he does good work, so i wish him well wherever he ends up.

I don't mean to imply that his decision to leave was precipitated by any tension behind the scenes--I was surprised that he stayed around as long as he did after losing his father and moving back to Chicago. I just always got the impression that he and Mr. Gerstmann were on opposite sides of the spectrum and sometimes their discourse seemed a little awkward to me.

Either way, I've enjoyed his opinions since they first popped up during the 1UP Show's twilight years and I'll miss my semiweekly dosage of him and Alex Navarro dissecting the industry.

Stop trying to misdirect us. He's the idlethumbs intern, isn't he?

Blatantly the intern Jake, don't try and hide it. I bet you've already got him writing your forum posts as you dictate astride your new office big dog (which has nels face beaming from the front mounted iPad, and handy pockets for nerd rope storage situated on the rump)

Who is going to be their moral center now? Nobody else seems particularly interested in stepping outside the white middle-class male perspective they inherently have.

Not to make this too Social Justice-y, I guess I'm just hoping more than ever that their next hire or two are more progressive and active in the broader community.

He's the intern. When he guested a few weeks back, it was when he was in town for the interview. Nailed it.

Whoops, I already said my bit in a different thread.

I can't be too sad about it until I know for sure where he's going. Patrick is one of my favourite contributors, but he was already detached enough from the rest of the crew that he can probably keep doing the same sort of content on his own and be successful. He definitely has enough fans and supporters to go the Patreon route if he wants. Only thing I'll miss is Bombin in the AM, which I started out not giving a crap about but became one of the features I most looked forward to each week. Actually, both Patrick and Alex were originally my least favourite GB staff, but I probably ended up respecting them the most.

I wasn't going to respond to this since I'm really into Giant Bomb and I was worried my replies would come off as defensive or snippy. Instead, I'll just try to keep it brief and inoffensive. Jeff strikes me as the sort of guy who sees the value of and maybe even enjoys having folks on opposite sides of the spectrum around him.

OMG, what if Patrick is dedicating all of 2015 to the PS3. A long form, multimedia project to explore the wonder and majesty of the greatest gaming platform ever released, in the year it reaches its full potential.
