toblix Posted February 13, 2014 Huh, what's this? If you're interested in discussing video games, amateur video game development or secret hints, you need to join #idlethumbs on QuakeNet! It's an internet chat room like in the 90s, and we discuss things and issues on there, like what video games are fun, how to do a thing in Unity or post Vines of how our next racing game is coming along. #idlethumbs? Sounds like a hashtag to me, old man! No, this is a channel on IRC. Okay I'm sold. How do I join? Joining is easy and free! You'll need an IRC client, such as: mIRC (Windows) Xchat (Windows, Linux) LimeChat (Mac) Colloquy (Mac) Pidgin (Windows, Linux, Mac) http://webchat.quakenet.org/ (In your browser!) Install or start the client, join a QuakeNet server. You can find the closest one to you here. After connecting, join the channel #idlethumbs.
darthbator Posted February 13, 2014 Pidgin also works
Lu Posted February 13, 2014 It's been a great experience so far. Lots of helpful advice/technical help for would-be game makers and plenty of banter too. Plus it's fun to just let it idle and check to see what conversations are going on every once in a while. I rate #idlethumbs 5 out 5 stars. Pidgin also works I totally forgot that Pidgin has an IRC thing too!
Gaius Julius Posted February 13, 2014 Yep, it's really cool to chat with people and bounce ideas off them in real time. Lots of random chat too, and someone seems to be on at every time of the day...

Stuart Posted February 14, 2014 No fucking clue what I'm doing. I just downloaded Pidgin and put in my yahoo e-mail, and copy pasted the nearest QuakeNet server in File Transfer Serve, but I can't join the room. Or any room in fact. What am I missing here? Stuart Posted February 14, 2014 You want to a create an IRC account, not use one of your existing IM accounts. The account setup screen should just look like this: I did that, but it says "Unable to Connect. Connection timed out" when I activate the account. EDIT: Sorry for double post. tegan Posted February 15, 2014 Thumbs IRC has been super fun! I was kicking around the idea of streaming old movies or something once a week while gathering in chat. A chatroom that I used to visit did the same thing. Would anyone be interested in giving it a shot?
