Zelda A Link Between Worlds: It completely breaks the Zelda formula but it's still the best Zelda game in ages, the fact it's not upsetting nearly anybody should prove how good it is.

Cat Poke:  If there is a free indie game section, this should be in it... It's the most fun free game I've played all year.

Gone Home: Ditto

Miasmata: A cartography game that's cool and interesting? That's gotta count for something!

Ittle Dew: If there is one type of puzzle game I like is the "Zelda puzzle" style, and this one has perfected it.

Viscera Clean Up Detail: Must clean everything.... Must pick up every bullet...

Deadpool: A superhero game that isn't a LEGO one and is fun? How is that even possible!?

I could add more, but this is a good list... until I change my mind... :P

How about the previous three Batmen?

I will pick my GOTY once I have sampled Super Mario 3D World and (some more of) Wind Waker HD .

I enjoyed reading your list Merus. Your critique of these games was informative and inspiring.

I'm hoping that you will expand the thought that you wrote at the end. It seems like you have something to say, and I'm not clear on what it is just from reading this:

The cultural critique hasn't quite caught up, but the fear that games needed critics to explain their virtues ended up not being necessary: it turns out games can speak for themselves, and when they can't, the piles and piles of money they make does a pretty good job in their stead.

True, but it's still a very rare thing.

I think I forgot The Stanley Parable from my list. That is actually my game of the year. It's beyond brilliant, the way the narrator often actually seems to read your mind.

Oh I forgot about Stanley Parable also.

And The Stanley Parable Demo is clearly Demo Of The Year.

 The last of us

I also very much appreciated DmC, Tomb Raider, Brothers

Batman was fun

It's always kind of depressing when I look back at what I've play during the year. I get a feeling of, "huh, is that it"

Ask me again on Jan 1st and I'll probably say either gta or ass flag. I can't get enough of that ass flag lately #sogood

Side question.  When did Spike rename the VGAs to "VGX"?  What does the X stand for?  Please tell me it's eXtreme and not eXpo.

If you use the hebrew number-code and then do a kabbalah-analysis, you may find out what the "x" means. You may have to rearrange some letters though.

eXperience? I went to the wikipedia page for the awards in hopes of a real, even dumber, answer, but it just says Spike is calling it "The next generation of the VGAs". What I did find is that they have an AWARD for "most anticipated game." What a fucking joke.

This thread has made me realize how few games I've played that were actually released this year. That said, my favorites (in no particular order and not following any categories because some categories would just be left woefully blank anyways...)

Bioshock Infinite: Very fun game, maybe not too different from any old FPS, but really well done. Of course the star of the show was (in my opinion) Elizabeth. Just... the way the entire game was an escort mission without ever being an escort mission was fantastic, and the reactions and personality of Elizabeth turned the game into something really memorable to me.

Fire Emblem Awakening: Another excellent Fire Emblem game that was too tough for me to finish. On 3DS. I don't really have anything else to say about it.

Mario & Luigi Dream Team: The Mario & Luigi games have always been great RPGs and this one was (mostly) not an exception. The only major complaint I have with it were some problems using the 3DS's gyroscope thingy for controlling some special moves and being necessary to finish some boss battles. The worst is the occasional complete lock up of any tilting whatsoever that will make you lose to a boss you've been fighting for half an hour... agh. But other than that, really fun.

Deadpool: It's Deadpool. It's awesome. I mean, yeah, the action was good and at some points quite challenging, the weapon upgrade system wasn't anything new (purchase upgrades with money earned by beating stuff up in-game) but it worked well. But the real reason to play the game is Deadpool himself. Wacky, insane, rude... it's great.

"if you don't see a game at this year's show, it's because -like the female orgasm- it doesn't exist."

This is literally the worst thing I've ever seen.

Each year I think they try to top themselves and make it worse than last year.

Watching Joel McHale step into the video-game cliche is awkward, but enlightening. When he doesn't know the de facto heirarchies of the people he's interviewing, I realize that it exists.
