Man, some of the side quests are long. I only play this in short sessions and when I come back I forget if I'm doing a side quest or the main one.

Does this game hurt anyone elses eyes? I dont mean artisticly, there's just something about the camera blur when you're running around that started to make me blink and have a headache ;(

Other than that, I'm having fun with the demo, but I'm one of those people who never played Diablo (and played up to act 3 or less in D2 I think? I dont remember..)

So I cant help but wonder if I should put the money toward a copy of good ole Diablo instead? Can anyone advise me on this?

Am I going to make the same mistake I did with playing Oblivion before Morrowind? I could never fully enjoy Morrowind, I'm pretty certain I would have loved it if I'd played them in reverse (I thought Morrowind had a much cooler world, but I just couldn't motivate myself to play it).

Being able to send the pet away to sell stuff is great, now I don't have to return to town that often and keep collecting gold.

I really like this game, too bad I have to go to my new job.

I have the same problem. The armchair game developer in me says "they should have made the side quest dungeons use a different tileset from the main quest dungeons". So when I load up my game I can tell immediately whether I'm in the middle of a side quest or what. Or if they included a way to indicate "now I am working on this quest" in the quest log would be nice.

It's a small nit to pick.

Apparently the side-quests scale. I'm level 22 right now, but noticed last night (killing time while Inglourious Basterds was taking its damn time finishing up so I can go home. Good movie when I saw it, but man it's long. Having to work the booth for it sucks.) that I still had one of those "side dungeon - Level 1-10" maps in my inventory Activated it with the assumption that I'd walk through slaughtering everything. I actually died in there, only the second time the game has killed me. Got some really sweet gear, too. Some armour that I found was better than double the stats of the stuff I went in with. There were even some monsters that I ran into that I'd never seen before. My advice to people, check out lower level dungeon scrolls at higher levels. They keep them challenging, and you may find some completely new stuff. I think they may have designed some creatures specifically for the earlier levels that they determined were too hard, so they'll only show up if you instance a dungeon with that tileset. Weird, but awesome.

How probable is it to get a complete armor set? I'm on level 22 and so far I've gotten two pieces from the same set and a few from other sets.

Maybe only probable with multiple playthroughs?

I think I never managed to get a full set in either of the Diablos (only finished the first one)

Sweet. I just bought a Level 1-10 scroll (I'm level 20) and everything scales. Wasn't super lucky with gear, but still cool.

I played a little bit of the demo and I want to like the thing because the combat is fun, but I am afraid that the same thing that annoyed me with Diablo 2 will annoy me again: will all the missions boil down to KILL THE EVIL IN <A PLACE>? I stopped playing Diablo 2 when as the fourth mission the NPC told me to go KILL THE EVIL IN THE GRAVEYARD, right after she had me KILL THE EVIL OUTSIDE OF TOWN, KILL THE EVIL IN THE DUNGEON, and KILL THE EVIL IN THE FOREST. Is it not enough that all game stories are banal and manichean as it is? Why do they not try at all?

It doesn't really bother me in a game like this. I'm sure if they had had a great writer on the team it would have been a slightly better game but I can't imagine they found it a high priority to seek such a person out as they were making a hack-and-slash game in 11 months on what was likely a fairly limited budget. Same reason they don't have multiplayer--they chose what was necessary to make the kind of game they're making, and they focused pretty intently on those bits. I don't think just saying "try harder" would have resulted in a more unique story.

i use it on my net book as well. IT does run reasonably well. The track pad can be a pain but it does run better than you would think.

And personally im really looking forward to the release of the editor.

I don't think I am asking for much here. I am willing to let the story be relatively one dimensional, but I don't want some chick telling me that I am killing them because they are EVIL. I might be killing them because they invaded the mines from god knows where and the local Torchlightites' livelihoods are gone to shit. Maybe I just look like a mercenary and they are in need of one more pair of hands to secure this mining town and there might be neato loot down below. These are not complicated or complex things to do. Hell, there doesn't even have to be a story of any kind. It would be a more pure experience if I was descending and killing and looting simply because such is the vector of the game, because that is my nature as a video game duder.

The problem with the flat good vs. evil narrative is that it is conspicuous, and when it is in earnest and not some sort of thought-through thing (I would be willing to settle to some version of they are evil because they hate our way of life) it is an instant destruction of any suspension of disbelief on my part.

Nah I agree with Chris on this. It's pretty obvious there were priorities for the game and most of them were game mechanics and fun; which congrats to them, they pulled off really well on a budget and such a short schedule.

I figure the lore/art direction took a bit of a back seat because of it; so yeah its things to improve, but when they get a little more time and money I'm sure we'll see it expand for their next game.

Tried the demo, was kind of surprised that I was enjoying myself. I never really got into diablo at all, found myself bored with it pretty fast. But for whatever reason this entertained me. Guess I just dig playing a half naked chick that blows shit up with a pistol.

I have yet to get enchantment ganked, but then again I'm only down to floor eight or so, and I've only used the Shitty Wizard about ten times... had some misfires (Nothing happened) but no wipes yet... I'll remember what you guys said and keep backup gear on hand.

I'm still on the fence when it comes to the imminent modding tools... I'm not exactly a modding wizard, but I have some ideas that I'd love to see implemented. We'll see.

For me, playing this game is like putting on clothes that are still warm from the dryer for some reason, and I was never THAT deep into the Diablo games. I mean, I completed and enjoyed them, but I never really went online or drilled into it for sets or anything...

Maybe the "warm fuzzy" feeling is clouding my judgment on this, but I like the story (what little of it there is) thus far. I'm not convinced that I'd react any differently to "Please vanquish these crazed creatures that threaten our way of life!" than I currently do to "Please vanquish these vile creatures that our realm might be free of evil!". So, sure- if the former would get you more into it, I'm down! I'm also down with the cliched story as it exists now though, wrapped as it is in a (masterfully) cliched fantasy steampunk world married to (brilliantly) cliched gameplay, heh heh!

No-one has mentioned Dungeon Siege in relation to this game. DS never sat well with me for some reason - something about it just didn't feel right.

Torchlight though feels lovely.

Yeah some about dungeon siege(both of them) that never quite got to me. I liked the first one a bit more with it's less fantastical world though. The one thing I did appreciate that a lot of games don't have is just the dark ominous feeling in the dungeons, pretty much only diablo has been able to pull that off. In DS they had some really cool set ups of creatures coming out of the darkness, the spinning elevators going down, etc... also, I like the idea of the mule, though the pets in Torchlight pretty much server the purpose, I like the idea of a non-fighting animal there just to store goods. Also the massive world you could play online was pretty cool too.
