I'm...honestly not sure how I feel about that.  While #GamerGate has certainly been used for some terrible shit, I don't think banning the tag is the way to fix that.  If the posts themselves had terrible shit in them, then fine, ban those.  I get that its still in beta but I hope they don't try to take the complete opposite approach of Twitter and just let people declare anything they want to be offensive without some kind of review process because then it would be easy for something like #Feminism to get mislabeled.  

 

Then again I hate how hashtags are used 99% of the time so what do I know.

For what it's worth, I'm pretty sure it's not an automatic ban. Some people have reported that they have used the tag and not gotten banned, so they conclude that it must be a fake screenshot. I take it as this guy was saying hateful shit, they banned him, and when they filled the "we banned you for ________ reason" email they filled the field with #gamergate.

I'll totally believe some hateful shit was said which resulted in a ban, but I'm still disturbed by the line "The following words have been identified as hate speech: #GamerGate"

Its not that specific tag that bothers me, its the implication that any tag could be.  I hate that hashtag too but I wouldn't put it past gaters to try and do the same to a legitimate tag.  But its hard to say without knowing more about the process.

So Ello is what, Twitter with more censorship/control? Really not seeing the appeal personally. Even if the vitriolic shit that's been posted on Twitter is patently wrong, restricting freedom of speech is nonetheless something I cannot abide by. How do you solve some of what's been happening on Twitter? I don't know, but I don't think this is the right approach.

Yeah I think they gave people a lot more invites.  I think it started at 10 per person but when I sent some out last night, I had a lot more than that.
