I wonder if I can pay money somewhere and become Baron Baron, just like Sean became a lord.

I believe you mean Lord Chris Remo.  Lord Sean Vanaman, ha!  The very notion is absurd.  Baron Vanaman on the other hand...

Or even Rí Vanaman.

Yeah I meant Remo, dunno why I wrote Sean since I even went back to the episode to find the name of the people who made it.

I can't think of a title that fits Jake.

Edit: except for a reader mail I remember from a long time ago where someone said Jake's pornstar name would be Jake RodKing

EDIT: also, is anyone picking Fennekin solely because it's The Wizard?

DUH! It even has a wand and everything.

I beat the fairy type gym leader... I don't even know the fairies advantages or weaknesses since by the time I had a pure fairy type I had a pretty solid team, although according to the map, I'm close to a haunted hotel, so that means I'll be able to get the ghost Pokémon I like so much!

The thing is I don't like any of them once the evolve, except maybe Gengar? I might as try to get one to get MEGA Gengar? It's either that or have a Litwick and never let it evolve?

And here's a stupid questions, I forgot, do any pokémon stop learning moves when they evolve? I think Pikachu stopped learning moves a couple generations ago when it evolves into Raichu, but now? I have no idea.

You know what the biggest challenge is in this game? "Gracie's fashion check", there are places they won't let you depending on how you're dressed and I've yet to be able to get into any.

I bought all the "sporty type" clothes because I thought I needed a full set to pass the fashion check, but I just realized tote bags have brands and probably count too... I guess I'll have to wait until I get to more boutiques or something. :(

Most Pokémon that evolve using stones stop learning moves, and Pokémon that have significant changes in typing or anatomy might learn different moves (ie: Nincada keeps learning ground-type moves if you don't let it evolve, but will learn flying-type moves if you do).

I've been in two caves so far and haven't encountered a single Zubat.

Also, fuck Onix and its low goddamn capture rate.

I succumbed and downloaded X.

Wow is it a joke to control the character. Why bother with diagonal movement? Game looks and otherwise plays great so far, admittedly less than an hour in.

OK, this fashion thing is stupid, I finally got a tote bag that goes with my other clothes and I still don't pass the fashion check... do you even need socks and accessories to pass the test? I've yet to see socks and accessories with brands and I just got my seventh badge.

It probably has something to do with Team Flare, since their whole biz is being fashionable.

Nope, one guy is supposed to give you a roller skate trick and the other place is just a fashion shop with expensive clothes.... I guess it is Gracie's fashion check after all! XD

PS: Who has two thumbs and a legendary? :3

4chan says you can get into the fashionable places if you visit every café.

Having a hard time finding the DS that my wife borrowed from me. I'll fire it up as soon as I can to see what hot pocket monsters I can give away.

Ah, that might be it... with so many cafes in that town, it's hard to tell if you've visited all... I wonder if I actually have to buy something there too, some don't really let you enter unless you do.

It's kinda hilarious to see that my starter is more powerful than the legendary that I captured.

I also found out that I'm dumb and learning tricks doesn't really let you access new areas or anything, it's just for show I think.

I still haven't found a Ditto though...

EDIT: They are close to the final gym? AUGH!

I think a better question is why did they still stick with a tile-based movement. It's fucking dumb. Especially since once you get the rollerskates, it's not tile-based anymore. Weirdest goddamn design decision.

Agreed on the movement, it's bizarre.

I'm up to the second gym right now. The game feels very dense with systems and information, as they have kept piling up every generation. As someone who has little Pokéxperience, I constantly feel there are things I should be keeping in mind, but that isn't obvious. Can someone (Tegan?) make a post of Things To Know?

For example, what's up with breeding/Pokemon daycare? How does it work? Should I match up the Pokemen I leave there, or just someone I want leveled up?

Also, does anyone bother with the super training/Pokemon-Amiee? As the activities aren't fun, I have been ignoring both.

As far as I remember it's for both, they level up and if they get along, they'll make an egg?

But it's weird, I finally got a Ditto and left if with my Charizard so I could trade it for another "starter", but it say they aren't getting along well, is this because I just left them or something?

Also, I finally did enter the "snotty" store, despite the message about your style it IS all about visiting every cafe. I've also heard the punk in the lost hotel don't care about clothes either, they just want someone who has learned all the skater tricks? I've learned one move but I might be missing a few?

Anyway, I suppose there will be something after I get the Elite Four, but I'm doing some other stuff in the meanwhile.

I haven't even tried those out.

As someone who was really into competitive Pokemon I go about playing the games kind of weird.  Basically I think of it as two games, there's the first game which is everything up through the Elite Four, and then there's the "real" game.  For the first part of the game I don't put any thought into what I do and just play for fun.  I don't worry about training my Pokemon or trying to get the right moves for them or anything.  Since they aren't going to be the right natures and aren't going to be EV trained I know I'm ditching them all post-E4 when I train a real team.  I don't think about breeding at all and it's manifested in a kind of weird way in that when I'm just playing the game for fun I have a habit of only catching male Pokemon and when I'm playing to train a team I only catch female Pokemon (who can breed).  It actually doesn't matter because I'll generally get a ditto of every nature and have them hold Everstones, meaning the gender of the other Pokemon can be either, but it's a habit I have.

I usually just try and have a good spread of types going through the main game and then I'll have an HM slave (I already have a Bidoof for one in this game).   This game seems like it has a lot more diversity of types early on (I caught Pansage, Panpour, and Pansear in the first forest as well as a Pikachu) which is cool.

I've never played any Pokemon game competitively, so the whole post-game team building and EV training and breeding was never something I did. I always only played until I defeated the Elite Four. (And then, if there was anything new afterwards I'd do that, like in Black 2 there were still like 3 cities or so I hadn't even visited by that point.)

Now, instead of training competitively, I'm just trying to get my Magikarp in Black 2 (nicknamed "Death") to lvl 100 without evolving him, because... funny.

Also, I always always always nickname every single Pokemon I get. Always.

I never really did the HM slave thing, either. I would always spread my HMs around. I dunno, I just wanted to have everyone on my team be useful in more than one way, I guess? I don't know, but the idea of using one pokemon for a majority of the HMs never occurred to me. (Neither did using dittos to breed everything and anything, actually...)

For example, what's up with breeding/Pokemon daycare? How does it work? Should I match up the Pokemen I leave there, or just someone I want leveled up?

The long and short of Pokémon breeding:

-All Pokémon belong to either one or two Egg Groups, which determine what Pokémon it can breed with. Most of them can be intuited based on the shape of the Pokémon (ie: fish can usually breed with other fish, human-like Pokémon can usually breed with other human-like Pokémon, etc), though there are some weird cases that make no sense (Wailord can breed with Skitty, Seviper can breed with Zangoose, etc). If the man outside the day care says that your Pokémon prefer to play with other Pokémon and not with each other, it means that they belong to different egg groups and cannot breed. Otherwise, whatever he says is in indication of how likely it is that your Pokémon will produce an egg every time you take 255 steps, with a low of 20% and a high of 70%. Your best chance is through two Pokémon originally owned by two different trainers. If you see that the man is facing the path the next time you pass by the Day Care center, it means he has an egg for you.

-The only Pokémon that cannot breed at all are Legendaries (one of a kind rare monsters like the ones on the front of the box), baby Pokémon (younger forms of a select few Pokémon with low stats, usually introduced in a generation after their adult form; ie: Pichu, Riolu, Azurill, etc), and -for some inexplicable reason- Nidorina and Nidoqueen. The only Pokémon that can otherwise breed with all Pokémon is Ditto, which is compatible with any gender (including genderless). Ditto cannot breed with another Ditto.

-The species of the offspring is determined by the mother, and will always take the form of the lowest evolutionary step in the mother's evolutionary lines. The exceptions are few: Nidoran, Nidorino, or Nidoking can produce either a male or female Nidoran (despite the Nidoran♂ and Nidoran♀ lines technically being seperate species), Volbeat and Illumise can produce more of either, and Manaphy (the only breedable legendary) will always produce an egg for a Fione. In the case of Pokémon whose baby forms were introduced in a later generation, one of the parents will have to hold an incense in order to produce the baby form rather than the original lowest evolutionary step. Incenses are needed to produce Wynaut, Azurill, Budew, Chingling, Bonsly, Mime Jr., Happiny, Mantyke, or Munchlax.

-Moves can be passed down in a few ways. If both parents know the same move and the baby would be capable of learning the same move, it will generally be born knowing that move already. The same goes for any move learned by the father via TM or HM that the baby could learn via the same. The most interesting are Egg Moves, which vary depending on the species. If the father knows a move that's on the baby's list of Egg Moves, it will be born knowing that move. This applies even if the baby normally couldn't learn the move at all otherwise. This can get you some super fun hilarious moves, like getting a Charmander with Outrage. A Pichu can also be born knowing its signature move Volt Tackle (which it can't learn otherwise) if its Pikachu or Raichu parent holds an item called a Light Ball when breeding.

-Natures can be passed down by having one parent hold an Everstone. Natures help determine stat growth, so this is pretty important. You can also breed for Individual Values (a set of hidden variables that also determine stat growth), but I dunno nuthin' 'bout that. Abilities have a strong change of being passed down from mother to baby if the mother does not breed with a Ditto. The chance is 80% for a normal ability and 60% for a "Hidden Ability," crazy special abilities normally only available through the Pokémon Dream World website, giveaways, etc. The Torchic you can recieve through Wifi right now with Speed Boost is an example of a Pokémon with its Hidden Ability. Abilities correspond between evolutions even if the exact ability itself doesn't carry over when it evolves (ie: an Eevee with the hidden ability Anticipation will always evolve into something with its respective Hidden Ability rather than its normal ability).

-Egg hatching is its own weird thing that you can minmax by counting your steps, but generally I prefer to just find a nice long path with no grass to bike back and forth on for a few minutes. If you have a Pokémon with the abilities Flame Body or Magma Armor in your party, the amount of steps it takes for an egg to hatch is effectively cut in half. Fletchling's evolutions can have Flame Body, so you can get a head start on hatching pretty early on that way.

For more information, I recommend checking out this Bulbapedia page! Bulbapedia also has comprehensive pages on virtually every Pokémon available prior to this generation; so you can get a good estimate of what egg moves it can learn, what abilities it can have, etc.

Also, does anyone bother with the super training/Pokemon-Amiee? As the activities aren't fun, I have been ignoring both.

Super Training is there to manage Effort Values, another hidden variable that determines stat growth that's been there since day one but has only been made transparent in this generation. If you're not enjoying it, don't worry about it unless you decide to start doing competitive postgame stuff. I have no idea what Pokémon-Amie actually does but it's cute and I hear it's required to evolve Eevee into Sylveon.

Oh by the way, I can get anyone a Tyrunt or a Charmander if they want one. I'm looking for Y-exclusives and Chespin, but anything is fine in exchange.
