Seen any good movies lately?

Recommended Posts

Well aparently this thread has gone on to the realm of "format" so here goes.

I just recently saw Evil (Ondskan) and thought it was a brilliant movie that didn't get enough press even though it was nominated for an Oscar a few years back. I especially liked the fact that it doesn't feel sugar coated but doesn't give you the inadvertend vertigo that was latter part of Million Dollar Baby. So quite enjoyable overall. Now I can't wait to see Ray finally now that it's out on DVD here in Germany and I *Heart* Huckabees and the Life Aquatic... and Garden State possibly.

On another note I am also quietly excited about the prospect of a new Stephen Spielberg blockbuster, even though it stars Tom Cruise, I would expect the camerawork by Janusz Kaminsky to more than make up for that. So yay for War of the World and the fact that it's not the german Wunderkind Roland Emmerich who brings us the next step in megalomania-vision ;)

I'm finally getting to see some movies that everyone else saw ages ago. Recently I've seen Hotel Rwanda, Motorcycle Diaries, Equilibrium, Pulp Fiction, The Usual Suspects, Fight Club, and Revenge of the Sith. Fight Club was probably my favorite. I loved it. Oh, and I just got back from Coach Carter... it was terrible and I wouldn't normally go, but it was my last chance to hang out with some friends of mine that I won't be seeing again for a good while. Same with A Lot Like Love. Why do people insist on seeing crappy movies? I also saw two classic MST3Ks -- Hobgoblins and The Final Sacrifice. Hilarious.

I would expect Coach Carter to be a more streamlined version of 187 which I thought was one of the best Samy Jackson movies... apart from Pulp Fiction of course, but that to me is not really a Samuel Jackson movie...

Well I just recently watched japanese horror movies Dark Water & The Eye. Also just three days ago I saw a great russian/finnish movie called Kukushka/Käki/The Cuckoo.

Also two days ago I re-watched Leon the professional after about 9 years since I last saw it.

I *Heart* Huckabees, and The Life Aquatic are fantastic films.

The last movies I saw were Star Wars 3/6 (let's never speak of it again), and Great Expectations the version with Robert DeNiro and Gwyneth Paltrow (let's never ever EVER! Speak of that piece of garbage that took a fine book and turned it into a joke again. NEVER!).

I'm anxiously awaiting to see Howl's Moving Castle, hopefully I'll see it this month.

Great Expectations was a fine book?

For me, it was one of the most painful reading experiences I ever had. Although it's possible that it was more painful than it was supposed to be since I had to read it for school

I Heart Huckabees was a good film, not fantastic, The Life Aquatic was shit. Great Expectations was an awful book, but I really, really loved what Alfonso Cuaron did with it.

I just saw Crash which is a really beautiful movie that all y'all should see.

yeah I read a great review of Crash on some site... hmmmm well it sounds really good, even though the trailer is a little on the corny side to me... life is soooo dramatic... *cough* Mind Game looks incredible but the only way I would be able to see it seems to order it only via yes-asia for 42$... now that does seem a little excessive... but I will try to keep it in mind...

Garden State. Great movie with adorable, quirky characters.

The trailer itself is to die for and not to mention the songs "Let Go" by Frou Frou and "Such Great Heights" by the Postal Service are awesome.

Garden State has one of the best trailers I have seen in a long time where you have very little plot spoilers. I hate it when movie previews these days outline the ENTIRE MOVIE in a 30 second commercial.

I just saw Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me from 1992.

Damn that was a really freakishly scary movie. ;(

I'm not really sure if it is a good movie, but it was definitely a Lynch movie.

You folks seriously need to see Mind Game. I am not kidding. It's got a 9.1/10 average score out of 23 votes on IMDB. It's the best anime I've seen in years, right up there with Miyazaki's stuff.

I read a great review about it in Cartoonbrew.com, they apparently loved every minute of it.

So I'm very interested, maybe I'll see it soon.

Well yesterday on tv, I watched the movies Leprechaun 1 and 2 and the movie Steel starring Shaq. Steel is probably the greatest movie I've ever seen since Leonard Part 6 (in spanish). And any movie where a leprechaun chases Jennifer Aniston is worth buying.

Saw Unleashed when it came out a week or two ago. Easily one of the best movies I've ever seen Jet Li in.

I liked Life Aquatic and Garden State. The last film I watched was some Kurosawa's Seven Samurai on DVD.

That is some quality entertainment.

Random recommendation: Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner [IMBD entry]. Its really eerie and strange and good. People might find it a bit pretentious, but I found it to be brilliant and moving.

An hilarious movie you should all see is The Rutles, it's a parody about The Beatles with Eric Idle, Neil Innes, etc. And also with short apperances by Michael Palin, and George Harrison (yes, a Beatle).

I've seen it a few months ago and I loved every minute of it. If you like Monty Python or The Beatles you will really enjoy The Rutles.

I saw the DVD of it in stores and was intruiged by it. Hope I'll see it one day.

I saw Hellboy. Liked it, especially the beginning and the ending. THe middle of the movie lacks a little bit pace and interesting stuff (it's basically a big scoobydoo-chase with a monster that shouldn't have been so prominent), but the beginning of Hellboy redeems every single fucking thing. Superbly over the top and cinematographically beautiful.

Also liked this:

Broom (telling about the history of the Bureau): ,,In 1958, the cold war comes to an end with the death of Adolf Hitler."

Myers: ,,1945 you mean... Hitler died in '45."

Broom (sniggering): ,,Did he now?"

But it has a cute Nathalie Portman in it! That saves the entire movie!

I really liked Garden State, but Natalie Portman was one of my least favorite parts.

This week my DVD of Bubba Ho-Tep came in and I watched it. I was pretty much what I expected: nothing spectacular, but a small, slow movie about Bruce Campbell as a retired Elvis duking it out with an Egyptian mummy come alive. COuld have been more over the top, but this was nicely adequate. With Bruce Campbell himself as Ultimate Redeeming Feature. The Chin. The King.
