Has anyone else been watching Outlander? It's a show I'm surprised does not have more internet buzz: a high concept period piece, run by Ronald "Battlestar Galactica" Moore and Diana Gabaldon, the author of the series of novels it's based on.

It's set in the Scottish Highlands in the 1750's against the backdrop of the Jacobite rebellion (topical!).

It has a female main character and a decidedly female perspective and gaze.

I would have thought it would be more notable. Any one of the above points should have at least warranted an FPP on Metafilter. It seems weird that I don't think I would have even heard of it if my wife, a fan of the books (she describes them as being as to romance novels as what Game of Thrones is to Dragonlance novels), hadn't heard about it from her friend, another fan of the books.

Maybe I've just been looking at the wrong internet.

Holy shit, the Blu-Ray of Frankenstein that I bought today has this amazing bonus short film from 1932 that's like the Great Depression's equivalent of a Youtube Poop.

I finally was able to see Zero Theorem. Now that's the kind of Gilliam I like. Lots of ho hum review, lots of people saying it's bad or not understanding it. Whatever, it's great. It's somewhat cheesy in it's depiction of future technology but I find it charming and not out of touch.

I was under the impression by reading reviews first that I was either going to see some movie about an old man director who is disenchanted with the internet or a movie that had something to say about internet pornography. It was basically neither of those things and I only read reviews because it took forever to actually get released to a public audience. Fucking reviewers these days, I guess if it's not a super hero movie it's just a thing to classify or look down upon. But then super hero fans get really angry so maybe they are coerced: http://www.vice.com/print/when-did-nerds-become-so-intolerant-088

God it was so good though and very pretty. It's also the first Terry Gilliam movie in a decade or so that is paced just right. Can't say much else though without ruining anything.

I don't really agree about the pacing. I actually think it ground to a halt around the middle. I liked it, but the characters are a lot more distant than in many Gilliam films.

Still don't know how I feel about 20,000 Days on Earth. It feels really self-indulgent, but it's kind of a biopic, except it's semi-fictional, and I'm not sure it has anything to say, but Nick Cave is so charismatic that maybe that doesn't matter.

The one thing I do think for sure is that if Operation Yewtree finds evidence on Nick Cave I wouldn't be a bit surprised.

It's based on a Thomas Pnychon novel, so I ain't holding out hope for that

I loved The Master, though.

The Master is somewhat hard to watch, but then grows better in your mind as your forget the movie and remember the moments and actors. Inherent Vice looks good, but then it's so a no-brainer to go see anything PTS makes that I don't even watch the trailers.

Inherent Vice is probably one of Pynchon's more straightforward novels. It's just a mad cap detective story, but Pynchon does an excellent job infusing it with this threatening presence. There are scenes in the book where the main character drives through various parts of LA and they just pulse with this inevitable doom. I'm really excited for the movie, because I think PT will do a good job translating that feeling to the movie.

HOLY SHIT I'M SO EXCITED.

This has such a Coen Bros vibe to it; can't fucking wait.

Also, The Master is a brilliant movie and may be my favorite PTA film.

Ooh, that Inherent Vice looks fantastic!

Inherent Vice is my favorite Pynchon novel (of the measly 3 I have read so far), and I have been yearning to read it again for some time now. I don't actually remember much of the plot anymore, just this constant sense of doom lurking behind all that smog and pot smoke. I agree that if someone is to make this movie right, it would probably be P. T. Anderson.

Also, holy Wolverine those sideburns!

Oh so it's what I hoped The Big Lebowski would be, excellent. I'm on board for that.

That looks amazing. I just remember I should read Pynchon a few days ago. Maybe I should try reading this before the movie is out.

I haven't seen all of them, but from what I have I would highly recommend the History Channel's The World Wars miniseries.  This series covers things you wouldn't necessarily expect, such as the origin of hitler's mustache, and tells the story of the first and second world wars as a single tale

OH MY GOD, IT'S HAPPENING

"It's a very big, epic sci-fi movie... This isn't a movie with a bunch of lines running around the page. We're not giving feet to the geometric shapes."

"Brands are the new stars of Hollywood. We have a story behind ‘Tetris' which makes it a much more imaginative thing."

If the film does well, Kasanoff isn’t looking to limit the “Tetris” world to just a big-screen experience. “We certainly have the canvas for location-based entertainment based on the epicness.”

This quote makes me feel very sad.

Oh man, if this becomes a big summer blockbuster (ha), just imagine... Tetris: The Official Game of the Movie.

I'd go to IMAX for that.

Hell, I don't regret seeing Transformers 4 on IMAX; that was actually a good film and I didn't need to see the other three to understand what was going on.

I've been catching up on South Park recently and I think they're still doing a remarkably good job of making that show relevant/timely and being hilarious most of the time. I've particularly enjoyed the gaming related episodes, like the one about Minecraft and the one about next-gen consoles.

Wow.

Oulander went from the most ladyboner episode of tv I've ever seen to two violent rapes in one episode.

Huge, enormous disclaimer!!!
