Tim on Gamespot TV Thing

Recommended Posts

Did anybody watch this last night? I believe you can still watch a rerun, but basically it was a live broadcast Gamespot TV show thing with a demo of Psychonauts and with Tim Schafer. It's worth watching, if not for the Psychonauts Demo, for Tim's Beard.

It's a heckuva beard.

Wow, the animation is really damn greatly done.

I'm beginning to feel that I want this game too. I don't think I need to play a demo anymore, just give me the full game.

Tim mentioned this site by Thrik&Huz: http://www.razputin.net/

Awww, poor Tim! He actually seemed nervous after they said it was going out live! He started tripping over what he was saying and getting people's names wrong!

Very cool feature though!

The only thing I knew about Psychonauts before I watched this was 1) It was called Psychonauts and 2) It was by Tim Schafer. Now of course, I like Tim Schafer and everything, but it wasn't really getting me excited... But now - wow! It looks really really cool!

It's a really cool idea for a game! Judging by the box I thought it might be a kiddies game, but I see it has this really cool side to it. Raz has run away from the circus to become a highly trained professional "Psychonaut".

It almost sounds like Harry Potter "on acid" (I hate that phrase, but it's true): Raz runs away from an unhappy life and joins a specialist school to become something much more exciting.

It actually looks, really really cool!!! But I have to wonder if I'd still be as excited by the idea if I didn't know it was a Tim Schafer game (and thus is bound to be superb).

Also note that he didn't mention Monkey Island as one of his games, even though he obviously had a large amount to do with it's content and style.

Tim's Beard had gotten such mythic proportions through all the hype that I wasn't that impressed when finally I saw it. And he's not so much George Lucas with that beard as Bud Spencer :mrt:

I expected his voice to be deeper. Why do I always think that people are going to sound different?
My normal speaking voice is a falsetto, for example...

I take it that connection has been made before, then?

I think you're going to be punching an awful lot of people when the advertising for the game really kicks in!

Despite having seen Psychonauts several times, watching the footage of Coach' Basic Braining level re-blew me away. Take note of the background especially. Holy crap. Those clouds and things are awesome. And the horizon is lit kind of like how the background of a stage play might be lit. It's hard to explain. But hot damn, this game is pretty and awesomely polished.

What really impressed me was the plants that reflect the theme of the level. Having bullet-reel and dogtag foliage is just too cool to describe.

Only thirteen levels... ;(

It's obvious from that footage that this game will be incredible though; I'm quivering in my booties with anticipation.

I have this really high, girl-sounding voice. Don't know what that's about. All my other friends, their voices went all deep and husky when they hit about twelve.

Okay, Mr Scha- how is it again? - ah. Yes. Mr Shafer, to say the least, I'm neither impressed nor amazed by your presentation of Psychonauts : you showed poor oral skills and your products didn't seem amazing at any level in your demonstration. However... I intend to be surprised in April, so.. do what you have to do

*CEO Mode - Off*

Okay, so, nooooooo, I didn't drool and I didn't wet my pants while watching this show BUT, ladies and gentleman, this is a good thing.

Indeed, I still don't know a lot about Psychonauts and while this demo didn't give me the opportunity to shout my admiration for Tim's every action, it didn't show anything that I wouldn't like. Plus, I just escaped the probability of being disappointed by removing any high hopes which is the best thing that can happen to an unreleased game that I may or may not intend to purchase!!

I know this doesn't make sense for you but it does for me, and having writtend it down makes me feel complete.

:sartre: This makes perfect sense!

My brother would go gay for Johnny Depp, I have a friend who would go gay for Brad Pitt, but if Tim Schafer walked into the room and said, "Let's make a baby", I'd be "Hell yes."

The physical impossibility be damned.

If they sliced those up into 60 levels of an equal total length, would you approve of it more? The number of levels doesn't say anything about the size of the game... ¬

Yeah, in Grim Fandango for instance, you get stuck on level 8 and stay there pretty much the whole game.

I agree. Tim Schafer would turn me gay, too.

I'd go Jewish for Gene Wilder.

I'd do fuck all for Johnny Depp or Tim Burton.

P.S. I thought you got stuck in the Ninth level, in Grim Fandango?

Rightyouare.

And I know you can't really tell how long any level is, but generally speaking, no games have giant levels in the platforming sense...unless you're thinking of a game like 'Jak and Daxter' with loads of objectives in each area. But I don't think that's how this game's going to be.

But I trust any game in production for 4 years in the hands of Schafer will be of appropraite length, at the very least.
