Orv Posted May 28, 2012 This Was really my first hint (I hadn't bothered before, having only seen his movies and not really caring much beyond that) that Will Ferrell was something other than his persona in his films, which is something I admittedly have trouble with. You put on that face and it's my first impression of you, and I have a hard time shaking it. But that Man Vs Wild special really made me rethink him, at least. It's a real shame, because he has done a couple good movies (I adore Stranger Than Fiction), but I don't know what's making him take all these titles like Taladega Nights and Step Brothers, but there it is. At least Jim Carrey is still funny, right?
BigJKO Posted May 28, 2012 but I don't know what's making him take all these titles like Taladega Nights and Step Brothers, but there it is. I think he does it because he think's they're fun to make and/or likes to make money.
brkl Posted May 28, 2012 Why isn't that Bear person wearing a woolly hat if it's cold? This is why I prefer Survivorman. He would wear a woolly hat.
Scipio Posted May 28, 2012 I think I'm right in saying his last film without documentary/interviewing real people/whatever you call it elements was the Ali G film, which was bad, so there seems to be a pretty clear pattern.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted May 28, 2012 Borat was clever and funny. I found Bruno to be lacking, and The Dictator the worst of all. It's odd to judge movies by their star, though.
shammack Posted May 28, 2012 It's odd to judge movies by their star, though. I think that's fair when the star is also the writer and producer, and the movie basically only exists as a vehicle for said star.

Orv Posted May 28, 2012 I also, as I may have discussed before, watch cinema/TV for actors, rather than whatever vehicle they're using (story, cinematography, what have you), so when the guy is, as mentioned, writing everything he does and it's not funny (to me!) it reflects poorly on him. My preference, actor over movie, is why I enjoy B movies so much, because over-acting is just fantastic. It's why I love Nic Cage as much as I do, despite more or less 90% of his movies being actual dross, it's fun to watch him act. Give me a show/movie with Jeremy Irons in it, and I practically don't care what it is or who else is in it, but if it also turns out to be great, that's fantastic. elmuerte Posted May 28, 2012 Watched some orange and teal again. This time is was called: Blade Runner: The Final Cut. I never watched the Final Cut before, and the last time I saw Blade Runner was quite a few years back (probably 10+). Just kidding about the orange and teal, even though the movie is heavy on the orange and teal, it's not the usual color grading. Or at least, I don't think so, and there's no hint about it on the internets. So, it's orange and teal by simply lighting. Anyway... back to this HD version: My god... this movie is awesome, and the details. It really aged well. If it wasn't for the various shitty crap they usually pull off these days, Blade Runner looks like it was released this year, the special effects are that good. And it only now struck me, Deus Ex is heavily influenced by Blade Runner's style, specially DX:HR, specially Jensen's house
Scipio Posted May 28, 2012 Blade Runner still an absolutely unbelievable film. The very end, like the last 30 seconds before the credits, with Ford's turn, lift doors close, Vangelis' bwaaaaaaaaaa....Danananana, is a perfect moment.
brkl Posted May 29, 2012 Yeah, Nic Cage is fantastic. Of course, it's best when he's in an actually good movie (Bad Lieutenant), but I just saw Knowing and had a good time.

Vampire's Kiss is my favorite Cage spectacle. It's astounding how he takes what would be an otherwise humdrum film and seems to be the only one who gets the joke and commits to it. Like, he literally ate live roaches as part of his acting.

Nappi Posted May 29, 2012 If it wasn't for the various shitty crap they usually pull off these days, Blade Runner looks like it was released this year, The hair styles are a bit of a giveaway. Fantastic movie, though!
elmuerte Posted May 29, 2012 Nah, those are the hairstyles are going to make a comeback in the next 7 years (Blade Runner is set in 2019)
ThunderPeel2001 Posted May 29, 2012 I think that's fair when the star is also the writer and producer, and the movie basically only exists as a vehicle for said star. Co-writer, with three other people with much stronger comedy credits than him. Plus a director with very strong comedy credits, too. The film fails because of its writing, not because of SBC's acting (although that didn't help).
Orv Posted May 30, 2012 So my day has been a whirlwind of shitty gaming experiences and movies. Safe House - As an enormous fan of both Reynolds and Washington, I couldn't conceive a better spy thriller cast if I had twenty years. On the other hand, if I had twenty seconds, I'd say drop the pointless subplots that seem to riddle the entire film. Safe - So it is actually possible for Jason Statham to make a "bad" (note that his films are not artistically good, but he's really good at making things explode in cool ways) action film. This is truly shocking news to me. Get The Gringo - I need to be more careful with gratifying my morbid curiosity. Where have you gone Mel Gibsono, our nation turns it eyes to Maverick and What Women Want. Iron Sky - It's about nazis that escaped WW2 and lived on the moon, and now they're back. Contrary to the shitfest that has the potential to be, it's actually a hilarious comedy. I'm not sure of availability, so I'll see what I can do to keep you guys apprised of chances to see it. Snow White and The Huntsman looks like it could be really good, and Prometheus I just want so badly.

Orv Posted May 31, 2012 Let me put it this way. The Nazis run the presidents re-election campaign. It does not get less insane from that point forward. Also Udo Kier plays the Fuhrer. (Yuri from C&C.)
brkl Posted May 31, 2012 Hah, I've deliberately avoided mentioning the film because as a Finn I'm not objective at all. It's not perfect, but sci-fi comedies rarely are. It has an absolutely brilliant gag that refers to Chaplin's Great Dictator.
brkl Posted June 1, 2012 That was really fun. Took some time to get going, but just hilarious towards the end.
Nachimir Posted June 1, 2012 Between that, and this: I really want to see Vampire's Kiss. Have I seen the two best bits already though?
Nachimir Posted June 1, 2012 D-D-Double post! Did anyone else watch The Mysterious Cities of Gold as a kid? Because there's going to be more of it, and so far it looks pretty faithful to the original: http://www.comicsbeat.com/2012/05/29/mysterious-cities-of-gold-cartoon-sequel-is-actually-happening/
brkl Posted June 1, 2012 There's a ton of stuff like this in the film and these aren't even the best clips on Youtube. It just goes crazier and crazier towards the end. Definitely see it if you're at all interested.
