Dragon's Crown: Gaze past the giant witch tits

Recommended Posts

Some people find certain things funny and others don't. I think it is pointless to try to argue that one is right and the other is wrong. Even when I find stuff offensive or in bad taste I cannot come up with some universal logical reason why it isn't okay for others to find it funny so I just shrug my shoulders and move on. Although it is a little different when there is direct intent to insult or offend.

Humor is a complex thing. I imagine everything that is considered humorous by someone is also considered offensive by someone else and both sides should realize this and do their best to respect each other and be reasonable. Problem is, each side has a different opinion on what is reasonable so this shit will go on till the of time.

Oh sexism in representation. You have a "side" and people of your gender are probably on your "side" and those who are on the other "side" of yours are the sexist ones.

Also porn isn't sexist to anyone (unless you're an extremist) and yet not porn is what's sexist, because it's less extreme than porn and thus isn't acceptable.

Does that about cover it for all of humanity, can arguments be moved on now too other things that actually have a chance of being "resolved"?

Sooooo... We're all sexist and not sexist and everything is funny and not funny. Also, we're all right and wrong.

Cool, I can live with that.

I'd laugh still. U:

It would probably seem less funny after a decade or two of it, when it started affecting your work relationships, earning potential, how often people scream at you on the streets, etc...

Maybe. Maybe not. I consider myself a pretty worthless human being, already, regardless of how other people treat me. But that's wasn't really the point, and I don't know why you're trying to take it there.

He's taking it there because it's the most logical and strongest argument to make.  You'd have to be silly to not see how the representation of women in media is affecting how people, women included, consider women in their life.  It's the same with degrading language like nigger or faggot and stereotypes of all kind, when this shit becomes wide-spread it's very damaging to societal progression.  There is absolutely a long-term problem in regards to how women are portrayed in media, I just don't think it's bad in this specific game, or at least it's too early to tell by just the art.

My point is there was no argument until he took it there.

Um, the dwarf the least clothed character in the whole game.

You know what if you guys are going to bash this game for being "disgustingly sexist", can we at least acknowledge that this is normal for Japan and that THIS is what an actual "pervy" game is like?

Well, for one, the barbarian lady is the least clothed of the six playable characters.

And, two, holy shit that video. That's atrocious. It's not really fair to ignore lesser instances just because greater instances exist, though. Japan has a huge problem with women throughout their entire culture. At least they also make the Pretty Bishy Bros as seen in that Batman comic earlier to make up for it? Right?

I remember once threatening to play that grope-girls-to-find-witches DS game to disgust a friend of mine. Man, THAT game was pervy.

Well, that's the problem then, you just said it's a lesser instance, but everybody is treating this game like it's the kind they sell with a "love pillow cover" or like you just mentioned one of those games were you "touch" the ladies (by the way, I'm pretty sure you can do that in the game I just posted a video about, it is on the Vita and it does have touch screen).

I don't think that something has to be the worst example possible of a bad thing to still be a bad thing.

First, what tegan said. Second, people are talking about this game because people are talking about this game. If the thread didn't exist, and people didn't care about the game, it wouldn't get talked about.

I agree that it can be really fucking goddamn annoying when every single game with even the slightest hint of titillation results in a multi-page debate attempting to define the word sexism, but that doesn't mean it's not worth addressing.

Plus I am in no way the market for a pillow game. There is just no way I will ever buy that kind of game. By contrast, I might buy a game like Dragon's Crown. Unfortunately, it fails the "can I play this in my living room without feeling embarrassed by my hobby" test.

That is not actually what is going on.

Really? I Saw Dasein just said he'd be embarrassed to play this game.

I can't remember the last time I saw such a small title receive such negative attention, and for such a common thing in Japanese games, if not games in general. And like always, nobody has played the game.... Since it's brawler, there is no way they can justify her "sexualization" with a deep character, but Japan never does that... or most media in general, which is why I'm baffled this thread even exists.

OK, I lie, this thread exists because Kotaku tried to drum up some views with it's controversial view on the game by claiming it was sexist drivel drawn by a horny teen, you know Kotaku, the site you go to to know the status of Hatsune Miku's panties and is constantly reporting on games ten times worse, but those are OK for some reason.

You know, I think I'm angry at Kotaku more than anything else for being so hypocritical.

I don't understand your point at all. Something can be both Japanese and also really gross and sexist. I am rarely exposed to this kind of super-Japanese game, so I don't comment on those games. I have been exposed to this game via this thread, and now I have an opinion on it. Am I supposed to have no opinion just because this game is typical of Japan? So confused...

I think my issue is just that everyone keeps fucking harping on about it. Okay, we've all acknowledged that it bothers some people. Let's move on and talk about the game as a game! I'm not gonna go take a tally, but I'd bet over 90% of this thread is about big ol' titties, and none of it about the gameplay, which is... sad?

You don't like it. Great. Wonderful. Move on. We're all seemingly intelligent people who have read and consumed your opinion fifty thousand times per game with breasts. Never shutting up about it is great in the right circle, but we all know this kind of thing is a problem. This community in particular seems to acknowledge as a group, as a whole that it's an issue. I don't think there's any single person who regularly posts on these forums who believes that women are properly represented on a regular basis in any facet of video games. So why does it always turn into a pages-long debate? We know. We all know. It sucks, and we all want it to change, yes, even me, who doesn't even think it's a huge issue here, I want it to change, too, I know, it's fucking amazing, isn't it, how much I don't care about this specific instance, and, yet, acknowledge, without reservation, that there is a problem. Commas. That's what you get for this. Commas, commas, commas.

Harrumph.

and for fuck's sake i am being extremely melodramatic intentionally and i am not targeting any individual it's just a trend that happens don't deny it and do not get all huffy puffy at me someone stole my 3ds right out of my jacket pocket this morning on the train eurghghghhhh i'm mad

Well, no one is stopping you from talking about game play, if that's what you want to talk about.

I guess I don't see what the issue is. If you're not interested in talking about a particular element of a game, then don't talk about it. If you're not interested in reading posts about a particular aspect of a game, skip those posts. I don't see how it's at all problematic for other people to talk about the parts of a game they find interesting.

Twig, I just pictured your avatar saying all that and it was fucking PERFECT! And that really sucks about your 3ds.

I think you do have a good point about nobody talking about the gameplay despite the fact that this thread is in the Video Gaming section. I personally think it is healthy and interesting to have this debate even though people are unlikely to change their tune (I mean, we all want to think we're right about everything) but I also think that this conversation is kind of hard to avoid once it's been started. So someone please start talking about the actual game and maybe the debate will just move on to Idle Banter or something. Seems like there are 1 or 2 threads for this type of thing there anyways.

Haha, that's why I picked it, for real. I can get kind of whiny and/or angry AS EVIDENCED JUST NOW and I like to think it helps to take the edge off. ):

Haha, now it just looks like I threw that in there as a pity-me fallback. I promise that was entirely stream-of-consciousness! Well, I may have edited a few spelling mistakes.

Anyway, I heard Dragon's Crown has gameplay! Is it more like Odin's Sphere or Muramasa? Or neither? I played the former and loved the shit out of it, but I never got the latter. U:
