Sorry for going off topic, but it bums me out that a 4 player co-op game with some social features is what passes for an MMO now. It's the most squandered genre. (That's not a slight against this particular game though.)

Yup, just completed the Moon mission. Didn't see any in-game indication of any particular item that would be carried over, or if this is just a situation where it logs me as playing during this window and has some "you got this thing!" mail when the actual game comes out.

Also, looks like Iron Banner Crucible matches are up right now. If you're going to play any of that, grab some of the bounties - a few of them are pretty easy.

Heard the 84-play podcast today, and they're talking about Destiny. One of the guys on there related some second hand information from a "pro-"halo player. I found it interesting because contrary to what I was initially thinking, the classes will have a huge effect on PvP. He mentioned that how the tank class is slow and tough, and will eventually get a shield to buff other players. That makes the tank a...well tank, and importantly a primary target in group fire-fights.

That suddenly makes the crucible vastly more interesting to me. Class interaction just makes things so much more exciting and deep.

Oh and I caved in and bought a PS4 today. My girlfriend is gonna kill me.

Yeah, from what I read about other the other sub-classes they're very support focused. I believe the Warlock's alternate class is basically a healer who can quickly recover allies health bars in a pinch which can turn the tide of a control point capture or give a flag carrier some needed extra longevity.

I'm kind of over trinity mechanics, because I think the trinity's a poor way of doing class interaction, but if you're going to have a tank, this is a clever way of doing it.

What exactly is the "endgame" of Destiny? What are people supposed to do once they're through the story mode?

Endgame/non-story stuff -

Strike missions - Synonymous with "raids" in typical MMOs. Co-op mandatory dungeons where you fight multiple bosses with the primary objective of good drops.

Crucible - PvP-specific mode. Gametypes similar to any other competitive shooter. There's also a mode that takes your armor and weapon stats from the regular game and uses them in PvP, meaning people with the best loot will have a distinct advantage.

Explore mode - go through story-based areas with no particular story objective. Find loot chests, take part in incidental environmental events, look for collectible grimoire entries in the environment, and work on...

Daily bounties - story/strike/explore bounties give you extra experience + Vanguard rank for killing AI in a particular way, Crucible bounties do the same for experience + Crucible rank.

Also I presume there will be some kind of events, because otherwise I don't see any reason for that shared hub that you see other people in. In Guild Wars 1/2, there are seasonal event mini-games that take place in hub cities to celebrate real-life and in-game holidays.

I enjoy trinity stuff still, in the context of a regular MMO I think it's important for people to have defined roles. In destiny it seems more like a way to add flavour to PvE and depth to PvP. I guess it's kinda lazy to go with the old tank healer dps roles, but it doesn't seem as neat as that.

The initial classes get (as far as my limited knowledge goes) to choose 2 different routes as they level up. One of the Titan's is a tank specialist, but that doesn't necessarily mean all players will choose that (unless it goes down the terrible route of X is optimal therefore Y is pointless).

Played the PvP with items and weapons carried over from single-player and got completely demolished.  Somehow, though, my last place finish won me a legendary ship.

I think I'm sold on this game just for the explore mode.  The separation of the maps between story and explore makes it so much more relaxing.  I'm not constantly confronted by choice.  Go the blinking green light, do something that takes maybe 2-3 minutes.  Maybe take part in a group event.  So happy there's not an overworld map while on the ground.  Makes traversal less abstract.

The Crucible bounties seemed pretty intense.  Get 9000 experience points without dying, etc.  I had hoped they'd be a set of semi-achievable daily quests for PvP, but they seem like they're made for skilled players.  If they had easier daily quests (with lower rewards) I'd be more likely to play PvP (though I suppose my legendary ship drop should be incentive enough, right?).

Also, whoa, there's a lot of currencies going on.  Vanguard points?  Put on a mark, cloak, or something else of a certain type and you can level up the rank of a group of people that'll allow you to buy special weapons?

Obviously they're there to whet people's imaginations, and the proper game will do more tutorializing, but having played both the beta and alpha I'm still a bit lost on that front.

The only change from the alpha to the beta that I didn't enjoy was the added story cut-scenes.  They fell flat and lacked any sense of drama.

According to a post on Reddit, some figures on how many zones/missions was leaked through the Beta -

Also seems like the progression will be Earth -> Moon -> Asteroid Belt -> Venus -> Mars in the story. Strike Missions will duplicate to suit varying levels, like the one in the beta which could be played at Lv6 or Lv8 difficulty. From that list, the multiplayer game types seem to be - Clash, Skirmish, Rumble, Control, and Salvage.

I downloaded this on my PS3 on Friday, and then couldn't be arsed to actually play it at all. Though part of that was due to intense drinking, I was also saddened by how uninterested I am, especially since I don't have a current console and I'd have to play it on my old 360.

Edit: I should mention that this doesn't have anything to do with gameplay (obviously, as I have not played) more a comment on the general marketing buzz and a few quick look videos.

Apparently there won't be matchmaking for Raids. http://uk.ign.com/articles/2014/07/30/destiny-the-endgame-is-only-the-beginning-ign-first

Not really happy about that! They say they'll take in the order of hours to complete, if I have 2 hours where I can play a game with no interruptions I doubt I'll have 5 friends online at exactly the same time wanting to do the same thing for 2 hours. Bleh, I hope they put in matchmaking.

Is there mid-match drop-in for strikes/raids through matchmaking (I'm fairly sure you can drop-in with friends)? I believe I played a strike where one guy dropped out and he wasn't replaced through the end of the mission.

I'm not sure, I only glanced at the IGN article (as in I used find to look for raid or matchmaking). It's not hurt my excitement, and I'm sure after a few months that'll change since every single MMO does the same thing:

"We're doing it for the hardcore! No matchmaking! Pain for all!" then within a year "We want everyone to experience the content we're making. Fuck the hardcores, this expansion is rise of the babies!"

I guess I see their logic. The raids are supposed to be really hard, require a lot of cooperation, etc, so playing with random people might be a frustrating experience, but none of my actual friends are gonna have this game and regardless of that, coordinating multi-hour play sessions among six adults is, in my experience, freaking hard. But who knows, maybe I'll find five Internet best friends with schedules identical to mine and this will be great. Or maybe they'll just add matchmaking later...

You could try coordinating with the Idle Thumbs clan, but I'm hazarding that we're spread across quite a few time zones making the number of people available at any given time somewhat slim.
