Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

Recommended Posts

I just read Akira over the weekend (mostly with the blade runner soundtrack in the background). It was a bit underwhelming. Very confusing in plot, very confusing to understand (character shit himself, or had a physic epiphany?). I often had to go to wikipedia to find out what had happened in the last number of pages.

A super good deal for people who want to check out some new series', I really like all of these, with the one exception probably being Morning Glories, though I think I only read the first couple issues and I don't even really remember much other than I didn't feel like it was something I wanted to keep reading though.  Lazarus, Fatale, Chew, Revival, East of West, and Saga are all great though and I've mentioned basically all of them already in this thread.

All-New Ghost Rider continues to be surprisingly, suspiciously good.

I just read all The Goon issues and it was pretty awesome, it's kinda like Hellboy only slightly sillier and cartoonier. The issue where they make fun of mainstream comics is rather brilliant.

It's such a great comic, but I've only read past Chinatown. I'm wondering if it gets better or worse after that. The art is great but sometimes Eric Powell draws faces like he was sitting at an angle and drew them so they skewed to the side. It's odd and I wish I could unnotice it. I also don't like when the comic comes too violent and crass (like easy poop or whore jokes), but it's all really well balanced and the main storyline seems like it evolves well enough to stay interesting and plus the emotional side stories of characters are great when the appear. Plus I like when Goon punches around giant lizard men.

The first part of Evan Dorkin's Eltingville series closer is out today!

I'm a bad person because I'm going to wait for the final tpb even though I know that's what makes creators their money. I think it's already confirmed though since Dorkin has mentioned it on his blog more than a few times.

they need a kickstarter!?

Yeah I gave my money but it sort of doesn't make sense because Tank Girl always gets published. Before the Kickstarter it was announced all of the IDW stuff would be republished by Titan Books who also published the collections. But sometimes Image publishes the Tank Girl comics and it's not clear why. Tank Girl is weird, because it tends to be really bad when Jamie Hewlett is not involved, but I guess that usually means Alan Martin is not involved, at least until recently. But I suppose I only read the first batch of the new ones Ashley Wood and Refus Dayglo illustrated and they were fun enough if not retreading the same ground but way less strange and trippy.

I'm a good person because I will also buy the tpb.

It's Free Comic Book Day today! I went to Forbidden Planet and got the usual collection of free adverts.

I don't know why, but Adventure Time comics are no longer region locked at Comixology, HUZZAH!

Should I even bother with the Witchblade sale? I think I saw the TV pilot and it was OK, it's about a cop that kicks ass and is scantily clad when wearing a magic glove, is it at least better than Fathom? Can anybody vouch for it?

Just read Southern Bastards #1 which dropped Wednesday and it's so good.  I expected it to be really good, but man it's amazing.  It's by Jason Aaron and Jason Latour who, Jason Aaron was the writer of Scalped which is just behind Preacher on my list of favorite Vertigo books, and both of them are from the south which shows.  It's about a guy named Earl returning to his hometown in Alamaba and stuff going on there.  There's also a couple great essays by Aaron and Latour in the back on what this book means to them personally and they're great reads.  My book of the year so far, really excited for next month's issue.

This page is basically all you need to see.

I've never been in this thread before and I haven't read it. So understand that I am just using y'all for advice. I hope that's not disrespectful.

I collected super-hero comics as a kid. I certainly enjoyed them, but the financial speculation aspect was a significant motivating factor. 25 years later, I have a bunch of boxes of comics and comic cards. This is not an ad. I figured that some of you may have had this experience, or because of your current interest in comics you may see my situation as a cliche.

I'm at a point in my life where I want to have fewer things. But I'm also a hoarder. A have a bunch of art I did as a kid. For example, I used to take the comic-book trading cards and cut multiples with an exacto-knife to create 3d diarama things. I still have those. As I look through the comics and cards and all that, I'm reminded that I used to be a different person. I'm also reminded that comic-books from that era are worth far less currency than I paid for them in their popularity. What is the best thing to do with them?

Even if I found a kid who was into comics, dumping a bunch on her would just take all the fun out of it; searching for issues to get a full run between 1 and 100 was intoxicating. I also fantasize about someone trading a pinball machine for them, but like I said, I want less stuff.

The difficulty of getting rid of them is that I feel like they aren't getting credit for any of their value, not what I paid for them in cash and not the inked art super-power no one understands what it's like to be the a teenage mutant paradigm. What's the best way to get any amount of this when you get rid of a collection?

You can try going to a local comic store, they'll usually buy old issues, though some only buy gold and silver age stuff. Even if they don't buy issues they'll probably know somewhere that will that isn't like Ebay.

So who else participated in FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2014 last weekend? My local comic shop was absolutely packed, with the line to the front counter running all the way up to the second floor. I got the floppy about the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund and the Bongo Comics FCBD issue, but I really wish I had managed to snag a copy of the Boom Studios FCBD issue. I mean...

Best.

I also got the first two volumes of the four-volume manga 7 Billlion Needles for 40% off. I really like it so far.

I totally dig that "Penguin Books presents" cover art too. I'll probably order the other two in the near future. It's inspired by the 1950 Hal Clement science fiction classic Needle, about an alien symbiote inhabiting the body of a youth and trying to track down a second, murderous symbiote. The manga puts some really fascinating twists on the story, like having the protagonist be an isolated, depressed girl who's suddenly required to make contact with her peers in an attempt to hunt down the imposter among them, and the creeping suggestion that the symbiotes are pawns of something greater. Lots of vibes of stories like The Thing and Parasyte. Unless the second half is unexpectedly awful, I'd recommend it.

I also almost bought the first omnibus rerelease of Ranma 1/2 since I have so much fondness for reading those at the library when I was younger, but I don't think I want to disappear down that rabbithole just yet.

It's Free Comic Book Day today! I went to Forbidden Planet and got the usual collection of free adverts.

I was disappointed there weren't any bespoke strips in any of the FCBD comics I got in my Forbidden Planet goody bag. Maybe I got a bad selection or maybe that just never happens now.

Almost done with Weapons of Mass Diplomacy and this comic is COTY material. No wonder it wonder Angoulême last year.

The second issue of Lumberjanes is out today! The pacing's much better than the already great first issue, plus some of the characters who didn't get much to do last time get fleshed out a lot more. It's the best.

I also picked up the first TPB of Sex Criminals, which has been pretty fantastic so far. It's super cheap, too (only ten bucks for a fairly sizeable full-colour book!), so it's a great time to get into the series.

Also out today but I totally didn't realize it: Bee & Puppycat #1 and All New Ghost Rider #3! I have some catching up to do.

If I really didn't like the first issue of Sex Criminals what are the chances that reading more issues will change my mind about the series? I've already said I'm not a huge fan of Matt Fraction, so I'm assuming chances are slim. I got the feeling that the novelty of the premise was going to get old kind of fast and that there wasn't much to do to expand it, but I could be wrong.

On the other hand I really like the other Image series Sex.

I found that it only got better as it went on and did a lot to expand outside of what sounds like a gimmick premise. Considering how inexpensive it is, I really feel like it would be at least worth giving a second chance.

How was the Bee & Puppycat? I've got bravest warriors and Adventure time comics, but they're starting to be a bit lame. How does B&P hold up?

I read Chew vol 1, which was fantastic. I got the first volume from the humble comic bundle. Now reading Saga which is great too.

I've also started reading Dead Body Road, which is getting better and better every issue. The art is phenomenal. I also have 6 issues of Black Science to read, but i'm missing issue 2! Gah! Comics are so annoying in the UK.

Dunno yet! It's one of the week's releases that I missed. I thiiiiiink Natasha Allegri is actually making the comic too, so it's likely just as good as that pilot episode was.

Also, in "oh comics, what are we going to do with you" news, it happened again.

(she is a vampire, if it wasn't clear)

Also, how fucking weird and hilarious is Future's End? I pretty much ignore Marvel and DC comics most of the time, so I didn't actually read any of the Future's End Free Comic Book Day preview issue until today, but initial impression strikes me as being one of those "Spider-Man sells his marriage to the devil" or "Superman is two guys made of electricity" type deals where it's something so phenomenally stupid that people will still be talking about it years later. I mean, DC is doing a new series strongly featuring the Terry McGinnis Batman meant to bring in new readers, and they immediately pull out the dumbest possible shit they could have done.

Not pictured: Wonder Woman as a giant robotic spider with a Raiden jaw

For fuck's sake. This is ostensibly being marketed around the character best remembered from such stories as "The Eggbaby" and "Terry's Friend Dates a Robot."

Best.

(worst)

Ah, now I get what the latest Shortpacked was talking about... I'm not sure if this is so bad it's good or just plain traumatic? They won't give Wonder Woman her own movie, but turn her into a spider monster? SURE! XP
