BigJKO Posted August 4, 2007 It was just announced at QuakeCon. I kinda like the idea of it being on browsers, giving you access to it wherever you like.. Hope it doesn't run like shit, though. source
ysbreker Posted August 4, 2007 Yeah, it's a great idea. I also like it very much that they released their entire catalog on steam. And that you can buy it all for $62,95. I'm very temted to buy that mega pack...

DanJW Posted August 4, 2007 I notice that Heretic II is absent. That game was hilarious in multiplayer: you could lop the opponents arms off and then just wait for them to bleed to death. Or you could use the "turn them into a chicken" spell, with a 1 in 100 chance that they turn into a giant 15ft superstrong Chicken of Doom.
miffy495 Posted August 5, 2007 ...and it's bought. Yay! I'll be playing RTCW over the long weekend!
SpiderMonkey Posted August 5, 2007 Quake Zero is a super idea. I also love how innovative it is from a business perspective. They failed to trump Quake 3's online popularity with Quake 4, and so to move their franchise forward, they're going for something truly radical.
brkl Posted August 5, 2007 I can't imagine playing Q3 in a browser would be much fun. Wouldn't you most likely be smeared by people playing the real thing?
DanJW Posted August 6, 2007 Presumably it will be exactly the same as playing Quake 3 in windowed mode, no?
brkl Posted August 6, 2007 I don't know if playing through a browser could work that well.
elmuerte Posted August 6, 2007 I don't get it. Quake Zero will be Quake 3 in a browser? So a 3D realtime game? So it will be a java applet or something?
Lama Himself Posted August 6, 2007 There were already a quake clone running with shockwave. http://www1.rasterwerks.com/game/phosphor/beta1.asp (sorry I am at work and didn't check the link, so I don't know if it's still working)
elmuerte Posted August 6, 2007 that's nothing like Quake3, besides, it's another 3rd party browser plugin: Shockwave they might as well release a Quake3engine browser plugin
BigJKO Posted August 6, 2007 It's John Carmack. You don't think he can code something that runs awesome on a browser?
Lama Himself Posted August 6, 2007 Well, technically it's possible to draw graphics primitive in a browser just with the canvas element. And in FPS sweet action: http://www.abrahamjoffe.com.au/ben/canvascape/
brkl Posted August 6, 2007 That's practically Quake 3 already.
elmuerte Posted August 6, 2007 canvas doesn't allow texture mapping on walls, ceilings or floors. not even close to wolfenstein 3d
Lama Himself Posted August 6, 2007 * I never said it was possible to do real texturing with canvas. * Wolfenstein also doesn't have textured ceiling and floor * There is demo with textures * I only wanted to point out something done without plugins * Nobody should argue with bullet points. It's ridiculous
elmuerte Posted August 6, 2007 omg.. that's an awful way to render textures. for each wall segment the image is drawn like 200 times with various offsets
Wrestlevania Posted August 7, 2007 It's John Carmack. You don't think he can code something that runs awesome on a browser? Here, here; he seems to be on a mission to debunk the idea that "lesser" platforms (i.e. mobile, web) mean visually crap games. Doom RPG and Orcs & Elves both look fantastic, all things considered, so I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotten something browser-based singing, too. I reckon it'll be Java-based as well, mind. I doubt he'd bother doing all that research into JME and then ignore Java when it came to doing something online. Java's much more comprehensive in terms of networking (therefore multiplayer) than Shockwave could ever hope to be. Plus Java can utilise the OpenGL libraries, so we should see something quite pretty. I'm excited.
brkl Posted August 7, 2007 Not even John Carmack could make Java run Quake 3 in a browser. No fucking way.
Wrestlevania Posted August 7, 2007 That's not what I said at all. What I said was: the game could look significantly better than other browser-based 3D efforts. Not that it would be "Quake 3 in a window".
brkl Posted August 7, 2007 I reckon it'll be Java-based as well, mind. ... That's not what I said at all. What? I agree that it could be better than say, a Shockwave-powered effort. But I don't agree Java could ever handle it.
