The International 5 (TI5) - Dota 2

Recommended Posts

I'm at the airport (time to head back to reality ): ) and can't re watch the play right now, but I don't remember a third burst of damage. Is it possible you're thinking of the damage tick from AA's ultimate reaching its kill threshold?

Alternatively, maybe gyro call down?

Edit: re watched it anyway my data's already fucked for this month. Fissure! Earthshaker used his other skill.

I'm still fucking flabbergasted that cdec fucking FORGOT about that wombo combo. Jesus. They seriously act like they were as safe as could be just because one hero was dead, and they're so closely grouped up. Wacky wacky.

So, TI nitpick - I kept waiting for replays and detailed analysis and breakdown of plays and I never got it. You ask an extremely buzzed, tired man what he thinks of how people have named the play, but you aren't showing me the play while you're at it? Literal game defining, tournament winning moment has been identified (in the moment, by the live team!) and you only show it once before you go off air? Valve has a lot of really good presentation, and in general I like the casters, but that's such a missed opportunity.

As such, I will make you be my stand-in analysts and ask where the 3rd source of damage is coming from? The slam and the ice blast hit, but then the middle two guys just pop and I'm not sure why.

They are shattering to the AA ice blast which makes you pop when you get below 11% health.  The ice vortex on the ground is also amplifying the magical damage being taken by both the echo slam and ice blast.  I believe the echo slam kills one, the fissure kills on and the shatter kills 2.

I hope you stayed awake.

I gave up at 3 AM when it looked like game 3 was lost for EG. I don't precisely regret my decision (watched the VOD in the morning unspoiled) but holy moly, what a series. Shame game 4 was a bit weaker, but wow. Best TI in ages, maybe ever.

It was also in my mind more than ever a tournament about the offlaners/supports. Universe, Zai, Aui_2000, lanm, rOtk, these are the names whose plays stick with me much more than the carries this time around.

Riot really beats Valve as far as post-game analysis goes, they have cool weatherman screens and have players talk the audience through their teamfights, stuff like that. I hope Valve picks up on some of that.

I swear they used to do that more than they did this year, but I may just be misremembering.

Agreed that it's something I really really want, though. There are defiantly moments when I was like "why did they do that specific thing".

Like, you know, try to Rosh in that situation!!!!!

It's in some sense an unfair comparison in that Riot runs this stuff all year round and has a lot of time and opportunities to iterate. On the other hand, they actually stepped up and decided to do so. It might be good for Dota in general and TI specifically to have Valve take a more active role in tournaments/the scene besides the once-a-year thing. I dunno. It's also cool to have more tournaments than just the official ones which teams can actually go to because they're not locked into a league with games each week for the majority of the year. Things like the IEM series, Lone Star Clash etc. are a lot more exciting if a lot of top-shelf teams show up.

You also have the echos from the Echo Slam, which when amplified by Ice Vortex hit even harder than normal.

Ok, gotcha. I saw that there were 2 double kills, I'm just unfamiliar enough with the skills that there was an extra big tick I couldn't associate.

Yes, I want most of what Riot has, but with DOTA's casters, pretty much. Valve can pretty clearly run a hell of a tournament, but there are still some rough elements the can fix.

I'd agree with Badfinger, I was surprised at the lack of post game analysis, replay, recaps, summaries.

But please extend that to live game info as well.

Tracing a narrative arc from Free To Play to this year's tourney, the way things played out this year was incredible regarding Clint / Fear's journey, simply incredible, and Dota 2's prize fund makes it comparable to a good amount of US domestic sporting events - but if you want to follow a TI game without streaming the video? Text commentary, ongoing match stats outside of the Dota 2 client? Maybe I was looking in the wrong places on those occasions. It was pretty tough. In terms of user experience, there's a lot of friction relative to those other sports - golf, tennis, baseball, basketball.

Sure it'll be an area that can be improved for next year's TI but maybe there are advantages to being a one-game company like Riot that Valve just isn't set up to obtain right now.

Their consistent inability to time their pre-match graphics so that they didn't cover up the start of every draft was also frustrating. Seems like an easy thing to fix, that they kept screwing up.

One thing I found myself wanting over and over again was, like... an audio stream, with casters trained to do that kind of thing. Sitting and watching Dota for 8+ hours a day wasn't feasible, but I would have enjoyed something I could take on a walk, or in the car, or what have you. Like sports radio!

I can fix that for you!

Purge and ODPixel were also casting the game, in the newbie channel.  Their coverage of the The Play will make you forget Tobi's tepid reaction:

I appreciate that they actually explained what happened, but holy shit what a horrible call.

I am looking for enthusiasm, but just saying "oh my god" over and over is really awful.

Thank you for reminding me this exists! I don't like Tobi at all, because of his casting style and because he kind of gives off a gross gamerbro sleazebag vibe. I'll give this a watch later.

Only text articles I've found are on http://www.liquiddota.com/forum/ti5/492133-ti5-grand-finals-bleed-blue, that one's for the final day. They have recommended games for every day pretty much, helps a lot in the group stage 30+ games per day.

I just don't like Tobi because of the way he pronounces "Ogre Magi" but fortunately for me he's not in the meta right now.

theScore's eSports app has up to the minute stats, a visualization of the map and text highlights. I ended up "watching" the majority of the main event with it.

Yeah he's not great

Hahaaaaa I forgot about that, but kept the poor opinion of him, I guess! He also just seems really weird-in-a-bad-way every time I see him in a casual setting for something ("I am in a room with Sheever, one of the only women who puts up with the shitty things Dota fans throw at women, let's talk about the many ways women are inferior to men!"). And isn't it a gross little joke, how much he likes porn of Dota ladies?

Ugh, he just makes my skin crawl.

Men, women, transmen, transmen, genderfluid peoples, gay, straight, pan, poly, etc etc etc etc etc like porn of video game characters sometimes. I think this is one of the lamest things to hold against someone.

It's not that he likes the porn that's weird/gross, but the ways and times he communicates this.

I remember seeing him say something about Drow porn in a Reddit thread about some female cosplayers, for instance.

That's not anywhere near enough context to understand why / how it was weird/gross. If a thread went off on a tangent then whatever.

All that aside, he's also not a great caster. He frequently just says things that are completely wrong, and in a fashion that is way more blatant and obvious than even when someone with less experience than him gets something wrong (in part because of his excited tone, which is actually the part of him I do like). It's awkward.

So basically there are almost no reasons to like Tobi!

It's mostly just weird how he tweets it out from his professional join dota twitter account.  It'd be like if Troy Aikman tweeted out the cover of Debby Does Dallas every week.

"How are they supposed to come back when [X team] has

  1. ?"  <- do this at least twice a game.
