Two Idle Thumbs Up - At the (Video Game) Movies

Recommended Posts

Controversial statement: Pan's Labyrinth. Wasn't a fan. Hellboy 2. Wasn't a fan. I don't think I'm a fan of Del Toro, if my track record of his films watched to liked ratio is true.

Between Cronos, The Devil's Backbone and Pacific Rim, the guy has guaranteed that I will watch everything he makes.  It's not all gold, but enough of it is to justify giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Rockband the Movie needs the most awkward groupie scene that's ever been filmed.  I don't know what that is, but it needs it.

I'm in the same boat. Mimic may have been garbage, but he still hits enough high notes for me to always be interested.

Also, I hope that "The Guitar Heroes" members include a skeleton and holographic Johnny Cash.

O_o Next you're going to tell me we work in the same office.

Even if we do both work at Cambridge Assessment, it'll only be for the next two days because I handed in my notice already.

I never watched the director's cut of Mimic to see if it shored up some of the interesting ideas that was in the original, and I haven't even seen the original since it was first released to home video.

At the end, the Rock Banders have to rip the mask off of Holographic Johnny Cash to reveal that he was actually just Bobby Kotick the whole time.  And he would have got away with it to, if not for them dang kids.

The post-credits sequel hook is Bobby Kotick in a lab somewhere building holographic Kurt Cobain.

Part two is a love story where the Rock Banders help Courtney Love reunite with Holographic Kurt Cobain, culminating in an intense courtroom showdown where Kotick tries to prove that he in fact owns everything there is to own about Cobain.  But Holographic Kurt Cobain, through the

(with a very special Huey Lewis cameo), has become sentient and declares his independence from Kotick.

I don't, but I do work darn close. (Transversal, it's in the building behind the Flying Pig).

(with a very special Huey Lewis cameo), has become sentient and declares his independence from Kotick.

Part three is a "return to form", as the critics put it, despite it being straight-to-video.

After settling the court case and watching Kotick throw his ruff to the floor and stamp on it repeatedly, whilst Holo-Kurt and Courtney trot off into the sunset, the Rock Banders return to their crib, crash on the couch with a cool Pepsi Max® and freshly ordered pizza from Papa Johns®, They turn on their Sony® Bravia Television to some shocking news - The Guitar Freaks are coming.

The Eastern music scene was largely ignored up until now due to their simplistic instruments ("three buttons? Do you even HOPO?") and their retro design ("Whilst your lane is flat and uniform, our lanes look into the distance... look into the future... Not just for us, but for the music! YEEEAAAAAAHHHHH"), they have now formed a power band thanks to their two new members - Taiko no Tatsujin on drums ("Expert? Bitch you ain't got nuttin' on Oni mode") and Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA on vocals to become a force so unstoppable, they pose a severe threat not only to The Rock Banders, but to the American dream.

An epic rock battle ensues - a mix of classic rock and anime theme tunes compete head to head. The final song in the playlist loads, and The Rock Banders do the impossible. The thing that dreams are made of - an event more memorable than Woodstock, more incredulous than Bobby Kotick's forced retirement - they 100% Green Grass and High Tides. ("Dude, this solo is killer!" "Dayum Man this Solo is so long!", "ANOTHER SOLO? How can this be?!?!?", "This solo guys... It's still going...", "ugh another solo? seriously?", "Finally, the big band ending! This is... long.", "Thank god it's over! Let's go.") The crowd explodes, the Guitar Freaks, having witnessed the most incredible thing in rock history, humbly admit defeat, and promise never to shake the foundation of the American Dream, and leave. Also it's 2AM and they're missing the beginning of Love Live!

I just finally watched Cronos relatively recently and enjoyed it.  It's an interesting take on a vampire tale, and I always enjoy a new way at looking at classic horror icons.  Ron Perlman is great.  I liked the bizarre, and completely unexplained, dynamic going on with the old man's family.

I might like it more when I end up buying the Criterion disc, if maybe Del Toro has gone through and edited it some. Perlman is always amusing, he's the highlight of the film. I think what kills it for me is both drab art direction and the performances fall flat for me. It also feels much to slow.

I think I already blabbed about Mimic in another thread but the new version is so good. I did enjoy it on some level before on the old DVD I had, but even with the early cheap looking CG effects, I found the movie pretty gripping the second time around with the director's cut.

Also Dona Lupe, his first short film, is so laughably bad, I couldn't tell it was directed by him in any manner. I saw it on a Cinema 16 DVD and it came with commentary by Del Toro himself. When I turned on the track, he just hilariously trashed his short film, pointed over every mistake, went on about how bad the story was, and then apologized for everything. I love him so much.

Children of Men made me want to see a Cuaron Half life 2 film.

As long as Alyx is the protagonist. If they have Gordon Freeman as a speaking role what little character he has will be ruined.

I predict video game movies are going to be big business in a few years time.

A last of Us movie penned by druckman in the works, The Uncharted movie, Assassin creed movie.... Word of Warcraft (I almost forget this is a video game movie) and loads of animated shit in the works

Are we looking at an explosion as big as comic book movies?

I wouldn't be surprised if in 5 years time Sean famous Vanaman will be writing a spin off movie based on a campo santo game.... maybe sooner, Fire Watch the Movie, why the fuck not. You heard it hear first

It'll need at least one of them to be Iron Man good. If they're all Hitman or DooM good, I'd guess things will stay the same.
