Comics Extravaganza - Pow Bang Smash!

So, Comixology is having a Harley Quinn comics sale, has anybody read any of the Harley Quinn comics? The Bruce Timm ones seem like a safe bet, but I don't really know about the rest.

I haven't checked what's actually on sale, but anything Paul Dini has done with Harley Quinn has been good.

The only thing that worries me is the Suicide Squad and anything with the "New Harley".

I liked the run of it in the 80's but then when they rebooted it for the New 52 they did this:

Isn't Amanda Waller thin in that now too? Being fat made her as physically imposing, which worked perfectly with her being one of the few completely normal people in the DCU who still pose a threat to most of its characters.

Oh yeah I forgot about the reboot. Maybe the reboot is garbage I don't know much about it.

I think I bought the first two issues of Suicide Squad...not so good. In fact, the moment where The Wall comes to recruit Deathstroke from Black Gate in Arkham Origins was way more exciting than any of those New 52 issues.

Ok, so I guess I won't buy the new Suicide Squad then, but has anybody bought Gotham City Sirens or the 2000's Harley comic? The rest are based on the original cartoon Harley so I think they are a safe bet, and the 2000's Harley comic looks safe enough, but I've never even heard of Gotham City Sirens before.

Well a while back, two comic store employees and fans made a riff on it and sent it to them.

I'm not a big fan--actually not a fan at all--of Fractions and Zdarsky and Sex Criminals but goddamn that's cute and nice.

Oh yeah! DMP is running another Kickstarter to publish another Tezuka book. This time it's Captain Ken, a space western from 1960 about humans colonizing Mars with a heavy dose of Native American genocide metaphor. Plus DMP's been really good about producing quality work in a reasonable timeframe when it comes to their other Tezuka Kickstarters, so this seems like a really sure bet, unlike that unfortunate last Tezuka Kickstarter.

 

Update on this: they passed their goal and now they're less than $2k short of their current final stretch goal. However, it seems that this is going to work the same way that the Unico Kickstarter did. After they topped out all of their Unico goals, they made a new goal of raising enough money to publish Atomcat, and then Triton of the Sea when they reached that. Hopefully they'll get to do the same thing this time.

Does anyone know if what problems plagued it ever for fixed?

https://www.humblebundle.com/books currently has a massive bundle going on for Dynamite's 10th anniversary with tons of books that I have never read.  I'm assuming that there isn't anyone here that would fall into Dynamite Entertainment's target audience and I don't see anything that interests me personally (nothing by Garth Ennis), but maybe someone else is more keen on these kind of books and they're going to be adding more to the bundle in the future (hopefully some of the stuff Garth Ennis has done for them like Battlefields or The Boys). 

 

If you're a fan of Alex Ross there's a big art book by him for $15.  I personally don't much care for digital art books since I like to flip around in them a lot, but if they added either their Howard Chaykin or Sean Phillips books to this bundle I would pick it up immediately.

It turned out that the guy organizing it had zero experience in publishing and didn't ask for help from anyone who did. He claims that he's still trying to get the books finished and out to people, but he's still yet to even post photos of the proofs or give any other indication that the books actually exist.

Also is this the best Dynamite Entertainment has to offer? It seems like a weak offering? I'm not well versed at all on their back catalogue, as I've only really started getting into comics over the last couple of months, thanks to the excellent humbe image comics bundle that was going a couple of months back.

 

I also just noticed that you can get Vampirella vol 1 & 2, and then vol 4 for extra money... But where's volume 3? seems silly to me. :/

I would say that this isn't the best they have to offer (they're probably/hopefully saving that for when they add more stuff to the bundle), I think The Boys is probably the best book they do, but I read pretty much nothing by Dynamite outside of Garth Ennis stuff and while I think his stuff is incredibly good, it's not for everyone and especially for his war stuff.  Basically if people who read his Marvel MAX stuff like Fury and liked it will most likely like Battlefields and The Boys and such.

So I've been thinking; would anyone be interested in doing a book club for comics? It would be a way for you jerks to force me to read at least one superhero comic and I, in turn, to make everyone endure at least one Japanese comic from the sixties. The only real issue in my eyes is that comics tend to not be readily available at libraries or digitally.

Also there was a sale on manga at my local comic shop so I picked up Cat-Eyed Boy and, as a bonus, grabbed a French edition of The Book of Human Insects that I didn't even know was there.

So this never really got anywhere because we couldn't decide how to format it and whatnot. Would anyone be interested in trying this again and just using the format Tycho set up for the Criterion club which is each person gets a week (for this we could do monthly or something) and then picks whatever they want and does a write-up of their thoughts to starts the discussion?

How are we going to do this for long running series? Just the first volume?

 

I think the Criterion Club works particularly well because it's limited to a selection. Could we do the same to comics? Could I suggest nothing from DC/Marvel's super hero world? (Or at least, the well known stuff.)
