Tomb Raider

So they're rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise, and Game Informer has the scoop, apparently.

I wonder if this will be a game in the classical Tomb Raider style, or the new, isometric thing. My impression is the isometric Tomb Raider is more of a spin-off than a proper game.

Anyway, I love the Tomb Raiders, so this will likely be sweet, whenever it's out.

Side note: Anyone subscribe to Game Informer? It seems they get tons of hot scoops, but are they a decent magazine? Is it worth subscribing to if you have internet access?

Glad to see that with all those wounds on her face, Lara still has the good taste to look rather voluptuously into the camera.

Game Informer is owned by GameStop, FYI. It's possible that they have a decent editorial staff, but that fact alone has stopped me from ever considering reading it. Potential for huuuge conflicts of interest there.

Thanks for the heads up. Knowing that, I wouldn't trust their reviews or recommendations, but I guess they could have some good editorials or interviews or something? Maybe? I guess I just want more Kill Screen; I should probably go look for some good blogs.

If there was ever a franchise in less need of "rebooting" :hmph:

What are they going to "reboot"? The story (did anyone actually follow it? did it continue between games?)... The characters (there's Lara, and, um a butler?)... The gameplay (one of the best things about the series)... Or Lara herself? *bingo!*

I guess I could be wrong, but unless they're really going to dive hard into her life and "origin" story, and make that a really important and integral aspect of the new game, then I don't see the point.

Still, if they reduce her chest size and the amount of make-up she wears, it'll be a step in the right direction... but even in that "realistic" depiction on that magazine cover, she seems to be aimed at pubescent males.

Cynicism aside... if all went well, maybe it could be Croft's Casino Royale to her Moonraker?

As part of the reboot I think she needs to go from a double D to like a B or C. Hopefully gamers have grown past that whole boobs = BUY! thing, but probably not. People are sad. :getmecoat

I expected the words "darker, grittier, more realistic" to be uttered within the magazine.

Also, I'm tired of the "naming a reboot the same as your franchise/early game" convention. It's starting to come of as a lazy way to convey "reboot", and it gets confusing when you talk about them in retrospect.

(Guilty parties: Prince of Persia, Mortal Kombat, XCOM, DMC, Twisted Metal, The Idle Thumbs Podcast.)

My friend says Edge is really good, it has columns from mr. Click Nothing and others.

I am looking forward to this simply because the last 4 Tomb Raiders have all been excellent.

Thunderpeel, as for th story line. The last 3 'big' games have had their stories intertwined, they were a bit rubbish but the did tie into each other.

Don't mind if they switch up the mechanics and the visuals, just so long as they maintain the sense of awe and wonder of exploring an abandoned tomb.

Edge has gone downhill recently.

Do you think it was a good enough story for it to be retold, but "better"? Or a bad enough story that it needed to be stricken from the canon? They're the only two reasons I can think why something would need its story rebooted :-/

I still think this is just a Lara reboot, myself, but it would be great if they really do add something new to the mix.

It may be me, but it feels as if Lara Croft has been doing nothing but reboots for the past five years? Everything from Legends to Underground have all toted that they brought Croft into a new light. That may have been PR buzz at the time, but it certainly has caused me to be rather unimpressed at the announcement.

To me, it feels like they had an idea for a game, but needed a known brand to sell it.

Am I the only one that feels a general apathy towards the Lara Croft character?

Well, the story was rubbish but by the end of Underworld there wasn't really anywhere for them to go, having neatly tied up all the characters and plot.

I would agree that it is most likely about rebooting the character herself and changing some of the game mechanics. This is something Crystal Dynamics did a fantastic job of with 'Legend' so if it means as something as drastic as that, then I am all for it.

Rodi, Legend was the only reboot. Anniversary was a remake of the first tomb raider with updated mechanics and edngine, Underworld was the first true 'next gen' version of Tomb raider and GoL was a spin-off.

If you didn't like the first Tomb Raider then you aren't going to like any of those (except the isometric spin off).

But then I have said that before... I think.

Rumors have been floating around for some time now, that this Tomb Raider game takes place on a deserted island. It's an open world survival game and looking at the supposedly leaked concept art, instead of carrying a bunch of different weapons and gadgets, Lara is equipped with a torch and a bow.

I'm hoping they're making a totally different game. For starters, maybe they'll finally make puzzles that don't involve gears or switches (they won't). Combat is another gripe I've had with the series, it worked on Playstation, but those shooter levels in TR: Underworld showed just how bad and outdated the combat really is.

Or maybe they'll go first-person and license the Trespasser cleavage tech.

Not sure if I understand the concept of a puzzle without gears and switches, possibly crates and pressure plates.

If they could include a plot other than "find the powerful mystical artefact" that would be nice. Obviously tombs need to be raided, but there's got to be other reasons to do that right?

But yeah, it seems like every single Tomb Raider game for the past ten years has been branded a reboot.

PiratePoo, you're not the only one, no. I played and enjoyed anniversary, but didn't finish it. Lara Croft seems like an empty figurehead to me; a franchise that has a vintage but nothing else, like a wine that was never particularly good, is now undrinkable, but is a valuable commodity due to the date on the bottle.

Magazine scans are now out.

The story has her stranded on an island, struggling to survive, as an inexperienced, 21 year old Lara.

The setting does look interesting, but I'm still worried about the video game-grittiness mudding it up.

Slightly relieved that it was just the thumbnails at that link that were cutting off her head, and not the magazine pages.

She almost looks like people I actually know in those pics. Every reiteration though, it's like: "Hey, we made her slightly less like a blow up doll. So now it's healthy for us to over-sexualise her".

So I assume she survives, sells the rights to the book and gets breast implants?

:getmecoat

This looks like it could be quite interesting/good/not-shit, but I'm still going to be cautiously optimistic.
