Sounds good, I'll donate as well, if it's convenient, easy and safe!™

i don't mind what happens. its all shits and giggle either way.

and i like the idea of us all huddled together in a tiny hut waiting for the zombies to die. who knows what could happen with a wonder woman skin and some RP.

I'm up for it, Haven't made anything that can't be rebuilt in a few weeks. Also would give me a chance to do some of the projects that I have half-assed, but do them right this time (minas tirith)

In the interests of experimentation, I turned up a new server to play with tonight. I'm going to see what I can do about getting minecraft up and running and in the grip of daemontools to kick it if it crashes. I'll keep people posted.

In the interests of load testing, could I get people to play around on minecraft.dthosting.org for a bit and let me know if it feels slow/laggy or otherwise weird? I'm trying to see if I can get away with less than the 1GB of memory the server asks for.

This is just a test instance, so don't get too involved in building anything, btw :)

I'll give it a try when I get back from work. I'll travel east for a long time, if others can travel in other other direction for a while we can grow the world to stress the server a bit.

Thompson and I spent a few hours digging and generally running around, and it seems to work fine with two people. Be interesting to see how it holds up with 4 or 6.

Time flies when you're crafting mines.

I tried it but there was no one else there now. But...

SNOW!? I didn't know there was snow & ice in Minecraft.

I played around a bit on the server. Latency isn't as good as on the current server, but it's not that slow that it's annoying. Of course I was alone at the time.

I didn't actually log onto the server yet, but I pinged it and for me it is about five times better. I guess that has to do with the fact that Doug's server is in the states, while the other one is in Germany. Still, I didn't feel any serious pain playing on the DE server so far, so I don't think the US one will be too bad for yous.

--- minecraft.dthosting.org ping statistics ---

7 packets transmitted, 7 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 30.557/30.668/30.765/0.072 ms

--- minecraft.idlethumbs.com ping statistics ---

8 packets transmitted, 8 packets received, 0.0% packet loss

round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 146.513/147.431/148.052/0.411 ms

I hopped on to check out the snow. One thing I noticed was that /playerlist didn't work.

I think /playerlist is a part of the hey0 server plugins: info & more info.

It is a very decent server management tool.

I'm probably one of the farthest from any US server and I get ~157 ping there so it's probably good enough. ~80 for the German one BTW.

I just ran around in it for five minutes, absolutely no appreciable lag at all. Currently 01:00 UK time, if that matters. I think I was the only person on the server.

I spent about an hour on the server, and during my whole time there it seemed to run quite well. I had no noticeable latency. Like most of the others I was alone during my time there.

I walked north for a couple of days, collecting world-generation miss-saplings (the generated trees sometimes have canopies that extend too far from the trunk according to world logic and as you approach them, they break and drop saplings). I collected a full stack of those, a bunch of mushrooms of both kinds, flowers, etc.

It would stutter (at most for five seconds at a time, usually for a second or less) about every 15 blocks. It would do this on any draw distance I tried.

Also, I couldn't make any snowballs, and while there was snow everywhere, it wasn't snowing for me. Was the snow off, or did I bake a dumb painterly texture pack?

If there is snow on the ground, you have to break it with a shovel to create snowballs.

I think that is related to on the fly world creation. I had the same when I moved into a given direction on both this server as the current server.

That is what I did. With both a wooden shovel and a diamond one.

I'm going to add more memory to the server, which should let me double the amount of memory I can dedicate to the server process (the probable cause of slowness, since it's never going over 12% CPU utilization).

Let me know if that makes any difference.

Also: For the curious, I picked Atlanta as a reasonably central DC for both US and EU people.

Post-upgrade, I notice that a) the server is no longer complaining about its memory allowance on startup and B) performance in-game seems better. Thoughts?
