E3: The Keynotes

Nope.

All of this motion control is so aimed at being super-extra double user friendly. Can you imagine doing something as arbitrarily punishing as that or Zork with it? :)

If Kinect doesn't let you nickname your xbox for voice commands, a great crime will have been committed against the public. Star Trek has already paved the way for casual voice commands to "computer".

Also, "Natal" was a bad name. If people stopped calling the Wii "revolution", what hope do you have with something that sounds like a pregnant ladies vitamins?

Well, there is a danger that 'H.A.L.'(you x-box of course) will try to throw you out of your living room.

That's another thing, I mean the hands free dvd thing is pretty awesome(porno jokes aside) and sadly is the main feature I'd be interested in. Classic adventuring game with this as someone mentioned would be pretty cool too, no controller, and voice activated; sure I'll bite.

But really, if they made a Milo, HAl, Nintendo Robot Buddy, Jervis, Whatever to talk back to me when I tell "Xbox _______" that'd be another nerdy selling feature I'd be in; sort of like home was supposed to be this new interface for the Ps3, why not just make those voice features and a robot voice buddy the new interface of xbox... I'd get excited over that.

Then you could have celebrity voice dlcs. Can get get master chief, marcus gears of war, glados, etc... that'd be fun. What if Peter Molyneux did it?! If they couldn't get him to go along with that get Remo to do a impersonation, then I can have Chris Remo as Peter Molyneux talking back to me as my xbox!

Sadly, I'm not making a joke, I'd want that.

You are probably right about the interface stuff. And as stupid as it sounds if you listen to it it is very smart that you have to call your console every time you command something. But that aside, what about if you live in an apartment in a block of flats with very thin walls?

On the gameplay side, I think most of us agrees that it is kinda lame. I mean controls in the game should be as simple to understand, that you just don't think of them when you play. When you shot a gun in Half life you don't think [click left button], but [shot] and brains translate for themselves. Now, everything goes [do push up!], [ how do I do that], [actualy do push up].

Sorry for stupid anology.

Fucking Zelda first thing!

Windwaker meets Twilight for style... wish they would just go one way or the other though, but still cool.

Swoord and shield... oh no, no no no... oh thank god he's talking about the remote.

Oh I need stand like an idiot to play this game...

...

:\

edit: :\ :\ :\ :\ :\ :\

Game looks like something I'd want to play but the controls look awkward as fuck and considering Miyamoto cant even play the game properly with them that doesn't say a lot for my chances.

edit 2: hats off to Warren Spector for retaining his game design in Epic Mickey(seriously Disney Epic Mickey Purple Bubblegum Monkey?) its just a shame they couldn't have retained that mood and hi fidelity graphics it would have had on the other consols.

edit 3: oh no, not you too kirby! *sniff*

I wish I had the childhood memories that many people have from Nintendo's various games, like Zelda and Metroid and Goldeneye. I'd be all gassed up right now.

Epic Mickey, however, looked pretty sweet. It's a shame everything by default looks kind of crap on the Wii. I hope they release a 720p version or something.

I dunno about gassed, just a little depressed.

Golden eye looked competent enough, but we have other shooters now, so meh. Just because it was great in the 90s doesn't mean it holds up now compared to the innovation and evolution it started.

Donkey Kong Country was neat I guess, looked pretty much the same, so yay. Kirby makes me cry.

3ds could be neat I guess, but I have to call them on the whole "we made the first 3d game back in the 90s" because I'm pretty sure they didn't

Nintendo just destroyed my brain!

AASFJASK Holy shit!

EDIT2: Metal Gear Solid 3DS? oh my...

Resident Evil 3DS?

They really got all the big developers behind this.

EDIT: Reggie's harem arrived.

I think Nintedo just destroyed my brain in the fact it didn't have overly scripted conversations between people and had the least amount of casual gaming talk then any of the keynotes... I mean what the hell is the world coming to?

Though that interpretive dance trailer on what 3ds is like was hilariously odd.

And the announcement of free Bjs from hookers at the end was especially odd. ...Oh thats not what that was?

Also Nintendo provides the shuttles to send them to Sonys presentation? That sounds hilarious odd and could be used underhandedly, lol.

Anyway despite Zelda looking like a bag of ass, good for them on an interesting presentation that wasn't filled with talk and super casual bs.

Well that was pretty great! Shame about the Zelda demo not working - I feel bad for Miyamoto; giving a demo with technical glitches is never fun, I can't imagine doing it during a conference keynote! (Also, weird to have watched a Nintendo keynote where Zelda was *not* the most exciting part!)

But the new Kirby is :tup::tup: for me, and I was pleased with the generally solid lineup. I doubt the new Donkey Kong will be as good as the bongo-drum Jungle Beat for GameCube, but I like Retro, so we'll see. And Mickey and Kid Icarus have potential, too.

In comparison to the MS keynote yesterday, Nintendo definitely gave the impression of driving forward while everyone else plays catch-up to their ideas. On the other hand, it would be nice to see Nintendo *ever* showcase something that isn't derived from an existing franchise. (Did the Kirby sewing platformer really need to be a Kirby game?)

It was a shame that Zelda presentation didn't really go like they planned, Shigsy was really fucking pissed because of that, he was just keeping that basic Japanese gameface on to not show it straight.

The last 3DS video was really funny with Iwata, Shigsy and Reggie, and what the hell, there was Starfox also briefly there in that video? Could this mean a Starfox 3DS game is coming? I don't think they would just put it there without a reason?

Nintendo totally dominated the whole show, I better start saving up the cash because there's a crapload of stuff I will buy.

Zelda, Kirby, Epic Mickey (this one is for sure, holy crap it looked so much better than the first pics from last year), Retro Studios' Donkey Kong Country, Kid Icarus and all the other 3DS games...

No mention of Rayman there, but I have to hope it will come to Nintendo's turf also.

I'm watching the Nintendo E3 Channel, and it's interesting because I can't tell if everything's scripted or not. I'm assuming it is, but then they all laugh and I'm not so sure anymore.

For this type of thing, talking points and groupthink are more effective than any script.

How can Skyward Sword look worse than Twilight Princess? Does this mean that Wii isn't the same as two Gamecubes taped together after all? Oh well, I will still probably end up buying it at some point at launch.

Some of the 3DS games look pretty interesting, however. I would obviously have to see the 3D effect for myself before I decide to buy my first handheld console. I doubt I will, though.

What?! Skyward Sword doesn't look bad. It's a bit uneven, but it sort of reminds me of a better-looking Ocarina of Time.

This, IMO, is gorgeous:

Yeah it's not bad, its just kind of this half and half version between twilight and windwaker so it's not as cohesive as the others.

The designs are also very, very vanilla Zelda.

Also, Ocarina of Time kind of looked like garbage to me, so I might be seeing too much of that, its very polygonal, especially the tree tops.

Again, not bad, just not as effective as I thought twilight and windwaker were executed.

Also the controls just make me sad.

Also the controls just make me sad.

If they *work*, I think the motion controls will be fantastic. The live demo they tried during the keynote didn't inspire confidence, though, obviously.

Ditto the lukewarm feelings on the art style - I didn't think they could make Zelda look *more* generic than Twilight Princess, but apparently they can. Geeze, I wish they'd kept the Wind Waker style.

The T. Princess stile worked in T. princess because it was made for darker stile game, while WW stile worked for WW because it was more 'cartoony' stile. Go figure.

I dunno, I like playing a game, not waggling around, working or not. Twilight Princess had a good combination of minimum waggle and actual controller.

Sony is up...

Unvelied the WIZZZZZAAAARDDDD.

Well not really, but seriously take that game and make a full hardcore wizard game out of their waggle wand and I'd play that.

Edit: Hey I've seen this before, it'a the MS press conference of "Core games, here they be, alright now on to the real show, move control shit!"

Anyway, come on last guardian, thats all I need to get through the day again, hopefully its neither waggle nor 3d involved.

Hey the paid actor to say things they want is saying exactly what I was thinking, neat!

edit2: Is anyone else completely creeped out by that sony remote, something about it is really really wrong, I don't know I think its the glowing ball or something.

edit 3: Holy shit this sony turd sandwitch just keeps going. I just want to see the good thing at the end and not this filler crap about 3d, psp, etc..

I am a bit worried about the technical specs of the 3DS.

Powerwise it is supposed to be a "portable Gamecube", BUT even though the upper screen is 3,5 inches which is is a nice size, the resolution is 800x240, but really 400x240 "times twice" because of the 3D.

3DS: 132ppi

DS Retro: 107ppi

DS Lite 100ppi

The upper screen is not true widescreen, more like 15:9 said one friend of mine.

The touch screen is 3" and resolution 320x240.

But still that was a whole lot of great news from the big N.

The Wii is only 640x480 (or 640x240 for games that don't support progressive scan, or if you're using analog cables) For a screen a few inches wide, 400x240 seems fine. Plus, on a lower resolution screen, you can put more hardware power into effects and get a little more bang for your buck, so to speak. I'm pretty sure the main limiting factor of the DS (graphics-wise) has been more horsepower/performance related than a screen that's too low-res. Surely the low poly-count and pixelated textures in Spirit Tracks are more noticeable than the resolution?
