BioShock 2

Why aren't we talking about it?

I just read through the GI preview and I'm not sure what to think. On the one hand, it looks like they're remaining fairly true to the first game. Playing strictly as a Big Daddy is certainly a bold new direction for the series and I think Marin should be applauded for at least trying something fresh, unlike most sequel developers.

On the other hand, I felt like what made BioShock so great was the feeling that you were a vulnerable human being cast into an unfamiliar and unforgiving world. I know there's a human beneath the diving suit, but I feel like the game might lose a lot of its "humanity" by having the player assume the role of Big Daddy.

I don't know. I'll try to reserve any further judgment until I play it myself.

Thoughts?

Sorry, Hot Scoops. Nothing personal. Still looking forward to it regardless!

Playing as a clunky Big Daddy sounds... annoying. But who knows. Scoops is on the case!

There was a short Big Daddy segment in Bioshock. That was ok, probably because it was only short.

It's difficult to say if it'll suck or not. Playing Bioshock 1 completely as a Big Daddy would suck.

But being the Big Daddy didn't have any discernable truncating effect on a lot of things you did. I'm interested in this game now, was very sceptical, but if they sort out some of the gripes I had with BioShock I'll be very happy.

I'm looking at you, Gaynor. This game better be one Hot fucking Scoop.

Because we don't care?

Basing a game around escort missions is a horrible, horrible idea. They are always terrible and BioShock was no exception. In fact that and the boss section nearly ruined the game for me.

The setting is confusing to me too, it's set after BioShock but I play as the first Big Daddy? That doesn't seem right.

Hey-ho I maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised.

What's confusing? Obviously the first Big Daddy wasn't killed by the protagonist in BioShock. He killed a lot of Big Daddies, but clearly not all of them, and he certainly didn't come close to traversing the entirety of Rapture.

That is true but I left the game with the impression that the whole place was about to collapse, maybe my memory is playing tricks on me.

Wasn't the whole place about to collapse from the very start?

about to collapse?

sure... it was a bit leaky.

You know, it would be awesome if there was a flashback section/level.

Also, considering your a big daddy, maybe some outside segments.

I got more of the "doomed to crumble" feeling than "poorly kept" when playing. Also, outside (i.e. in the water) sequences has been confirmed.

It's way too early to say anything -- I haven't even read the article or anything -- but my initial response to the 'headline' was skepticism. Big Daddies were a such a big part of the atmosphere of the first game: their whale-moans and thumping footsteps echoing through drippy halls ... their pathetic knocking on the wall, trying to lure out a little sister you knew wasn't coming (you cruel bastard you) .... Their presence was as much what made Rapture an interesting (sometimes nervewracking) place to visit as the seabottom locale. Playing as that sad creature effectively removes it from the ecosystem (at the very least, it softens its place). I fear the whole game will be poorer for it.

Maybe they've got something else up their sleeve that'll contribute to the games environment. Presumably they do ... just dealing with splicers, splicers, and more splicers sounds rather dull. The Big Sister thing ... whatever. Smells a bit gimmicky. Maybe it'll be cool, maybe the genuinely interesting stuff doesn't make good News!. I'll keep an eye out for news, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's an intrinsic side effect of doing a sequel.

Changing something will risk the working formula to fail. But not changing something can result in a dull copy of the original.

Bioshock 2 could be a Terminator 2. The big sister might be a T-1000. But Bioshock 2 could also become Terminator 3 with the big sister being the T-X.

I'm sure it'll be fine, but I can't help but think its just going to be a cash in title and not pay the IP justice. Oh, and I can't stand the design of the Big Sister.

Hmmm. Big Sister doesn't seem to be part of the same world as Big Daddy. With the BD you could see recognisable pieces of old fashioned objects and styles. It was a nightmarish amalgamation of familiar things... The Big Sister looks like she should be fighting next to Ninja Gaiden Black. In space.

I like the Big Sister design, myself. The Art Deco styling of the armour - plus those nasty-looking leg irons - suggest a complex and eerie character quite different to those in the first game.

I wonder if the rumour mill's mistaken though; what if you're playing as a - or possibly even the - Big Sister? That'd certainly be interesting, and should be nothing like as lumbering or clunky as the Big Daddy was to play.

Beginning to get that tingling anticipation I had when firmer details of the first game started to appear...

Are you referring to the cover picture as the Big Sister? I'd wager that's the player character. Doesn't look like a sister...

@Wrestlevania and @brkl: it's 100% confirmed that you play as a Big Daddy and that the Big Sister is the major antagonist in the game.

Hang on, if you have Big Daddy and Little Sister, then you also have a Big Sister... where's the Little Daddy? Shouldn't it of been Big Mother? I guess in order to be a sister, you need a sibling, which explains the Big Sister / Little Sister thing. Does that make the Big Daddy a single parent?

:erm:

Yeees, but where's this picture of the Big Sister people keep talking about? Is it the GameInformer cover?
