The Colour of Magic (Discworld)

Recommended Posts

God, this thing is being advertised like a bummer in the UK. It's on on Sunday, for those who like Discworld and shit. ;

It's by the Hogfather dudes, which apparently turned out well. Sir David Jason is also in it again.

Crap, no I haven'y seen any publicity at all. But I don't have Sky 1 either (stupid Virgin ;( )

Overall I think Hogfather was pretty good, despite one or two weak performances. Colour of Magic though, I'm more aprehensive about. It's about 20 years older than Hogfather and much more rambling and anarchic. It doesn't really have a message or theme, it's more like a bunch of parody skits strung together. Also its story doesn't end until the next book, Light Fantastic.

Still, fingers crossed.

edit: hmm, trailer looks pretty good. Twoflower should have been asian, but nevermind. David Jason seems like a good choice to play Rincewind.

Heh.. my opinion is just the opposite. But that is most likely only because I got familiar with Discword series through Discword II the game. Ever since I have imagined him to look more or less like this.

Not sure what I should think of the film, though.

Well yes, I mean in my mind Rincewind will always be Eric Idle. But David Jason, although not really skinny enough, looks like he is pulling it off.

Rincewind seems to have more than a passing resemblance to Albert.

I'm guessing Sky charged a fucking fortune for easter weekend advertising set in the breaks for this, and might be worried about viewing figures? I don't think I've ever seen sky push something this hard. The "making of" program seems to be on even more than Top Gear.

I'm getting really sick of it already. Every time you hit the back up button to get rid of the little "colour of magic" thingie in the top corner, it reappears in about a minute flat.

Noone, ever get sky. I didn't by choice, just moved into a house with it, and the amount of advertising and sheer repetition is fucking terrible. I swear, it's damn close to Big Look Circus or Shiny Shiny Coin Coin.

Teee. Yeah, this is more prominent than I've seen before.

Sky itself is good, though. Sky+ has become invaluable, and the channels always have programmes I like on such as Lost and of course the movies. I wouldn't ever be inclined to say Sky sucks or anything.

Isn't Rincewind supposed to be younger ?... like in his thirties ?

I don't think his age is ever specified in the books. I assumed he was middle-aged.

Bah, I'm disappointed that the first live-action incarnation of Rincewind isn't Adrien Brody.

Hogfather was nice - they totally nailed the visual (praise real sets) and the acting , which was a great surprise - but in my opinion, it could have put up with a better structure, and a bit more focus.

I think I'm just so spoiled by DVDs and <cough> video files, that 15 minutes or so of adverts an hour feels like an outrage :)

This looks interesting. Tim Curry is always a good pick, no matter which role. No matter which.

But really, I don't watch any television anymore. It's just too static.

Hogfather was a pretty good production, but they didn't seem to capture Terry Pratchett's humor, at least I rarely found myself laughing. Hopefully The Colour of Magic won't fall flat as well.

That's because a lot of the humor is within the descriptions of things. That doesn't translate well to a movie, it does work well for computer games.

Looking forward to this movie.

I don't know about the Hogfather, but apparently Terry is pretty heavily involved with this and had a lot of input regarding essentially every aspect of the writing, including turning The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic into a single story (the film covers the events of both). If anyone's going to be able to make the humour transition properly, it'll be with his help.

I wonder if they're going to a watch one next, off the top of my head I can't really think of anyone good to play Carrot or Vimes, the other characters should be quite easy.

They'll probably just cast David Jason as Vimes, and then follow up with him playing Granny Weatherwax.

It'll eventually end up like an Eddie Murphy film, with all the main characters played by David Jason.

(I have nothing against David Jason, I just really think he was a) wrong for rincewind and B) already albert, so it's weird)

David Jason is clearly there to pull in viewers who otherwise would never ever watch something called Discworld. Like my dad.

Guards Guards would be good, but has been on stage for ages. Men at Arms though is superb and would work very well, and has some nice subtext about gun crime.

I'm more worried who they'll cast for nobby nobbs. I mean where are you going to find a small guy who looks ugly enough to play Nobby? Make-up can do a lot, but not that much I think?

Yeah they in no way did him justice. But then it's hard to find someone who sometimes gets confused with the Librarian's cousin.

Edit: also isn't Light Fantastic the first appearance of the Librarian?

Edit edit: also the first appearance of Cohen the Barbarian.

OK now I REALLY think they may have bitten off more than they can chew...

I thought the Colour of Magic TV representation of Cohen was pretty cool.

I'm on Virgin and I'm seeing a ton of adverts too. You're just not watching the right channels :mock:

I don't actually have Sky 1 anymore either though

Hee man, Sky are such bastards for that. :~

Weirdly, Sky customers get Virgin 1. I guess Virgin aren't as foolish/petty as they look.
