The Colour of Magic (Discworld)

Recommended Posts

I thought it was pretty good. Worked better than Hogfather. Cohen, the Librarian, Vetinari, the Luggage, even Rincewind were all good. Twoflower, not so much.

I saw this on Friday. Wow what a piece of shit movie.

Did you enjoy watching Hogfather ?

On a related note, I'm amazed they chose those two particular books for screen adaptation : in my opinion, these are the most difficult stories to adapt for the screen; their story is a big mess. Any of the guards book would have been great and if they really wanted to have Rincewind in, they could have chosen Faust/Eric.

I haven't seen Hogfather. For the record I have only read two Discworld novels (one of which was Colour of Magic, which I read like 10 years ago) and played the Discworld games so I didn't really have any expectations or anything. I just saw the movie and didn't like it at all, and I only saw it to the end because I had fun commenting on the movie with Spaff who I was watching it with.

I don't know why, but even coming across it while ill and channel surfing at the weekend, I couldn't muster enough interest to watch (Which is odd. I didn't think Hogfather was great, but passable). I'm kind of glad you confirmed it's awful Marek, else I'd think I was just having an allergic reaction to marketing or something.

Edit: I think it's the casting. Looking at a picture of David Jason and Sean Astin in it really grates against all the impressions the books gave me so long ago.

Just trawled google for some reviews/reactions and found possibly the most oblique insult ever at rllmuk: "One thing I've learned from watching this is that Ubisoft are churning out an awful lot of identikit shovelware for DS." Kind of like seeing an artist complemented on his picture frames :)

Saw it on Saturday, my god it was awful.

It was just a big mess of completely unfunny things.

I wouldn't say it was awful, but it wasn't great. I thought it picked up towards the end though. And yes Chen was a good portrayal. Hogfather was on the whole better.

As you say, it was a bit of mess of lots of stuff, which is exactly why I didn't think this book would make a good adaptation. Hopefully they'll choose one with a stronger narrative next time. Other than Mort and Pyramids, I think the early books don't have quite bite of the later ones.
