Marek Posted December 20, 2007 The teaser is fine. It's Duke Nukem. It's supposed to be cheesy and campy and at that it succeeds. I must admit though that Duke Nukem really feels like an anachronism now. You can really tell that this series once started out as shareware in the 90ies. Ginger Posted December 20, 2007 Appearing in a telephone box near you imminently. Would! Phoned the number nothng happened; WTF, where's my Duke Nukem man whore.
Wrestlevania Posted December 20, 2007 Phoned the number nothng happened; WTF, where's my Duke Nukem man whore. In Cliffy B's office, oiling up Marcus Fenix.
Roderick Posted December 20, 2007 That teaser was terribly amateurish. There's nothing wrong with camp, but this isn't it. This is just plain bad stuff. Unless camp nowadays stands for doing a bad job simply because you can't do a good one Jesus Christ, that voice. Was it this bad in the original? Times have changed, and the Duke didn't change along. Wrestlevania Posted December 20, 2007 No, the voice was deeper and more gravelly. It's like he's quit smoking sometime between now and then, contrary to the teaser.
Marek Posted December 20, 2007 Yeah. I was wondering if it might just be due to the poor sound compression in the 486 days or whenever Duke 3D was released.
Wrestlevania Posted December 20, 2007 I wouldn't think so; they were pretty sharp, in terms of audio quality, as I recall.
Nappi Posted December 20, 2007 I thought the audio was actually pretty grainy (or something like that). Might have been my poor sound card and speakers though.
elmuerte Posted December 20, 2007 Last Saturday we had our annual company Christmas party. It was a lot of fun as usual but it featured one special surprise. It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. It was just something is they quickly put together for the xmas party. I seriously doubt the Duke CG part was actual game content (the gameplay flashes of course are).
Wrestlevania Posted December 20, 2007 If anything, I'd say the inverse actually. The Duke character model looked pretty final and in-game to me, whereas the brief flashes of "game" were awful -- almost like target footage. Everything but the central character in each shot was horribly blurred, apparently so as to mask it from scrutiny.
vimes Posted December 20, 2007 It turns out that several people had been secretly working late nights and into the wee hours of the morning preparing a special video for those at the party. They created a short teaser for Duke Nukem Forever. Isn't that the same kind of declaration Broussard made each time DNF media was released since the 2001 trailer? It seems like they don't have any plan for development AND marketing ... it's kind of nice they can do whatever they want, but who's pouring money in this bottomless hole? I know at least one game director who could make 100 decent games with the budget they seem to have.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted December 21, 2007 Well 3D Realms are paying for it themselves... which is good I guess, as they're independent. I suppose the money came from Max Payne and Prey, and the reason they keep working on it is that it's the best license they own, and so more likely to make money than a "new" title. Apparently Prey was in development hell for 11 years... DNF has only been there for ten!
Wrestlevania Posted December 21, 2007 I remember reading about Prey when it was first announced in early '96. That first screenshot of the portal technology was really exciting -- and the Native American lead character, with his bow and arrow and pet raven, was really intriguing as well. vimes Posted December 21, 2007 I suppose the money came from Max Payne and Prey Well, Prey seems to be their most recent source of money, but it's not like it was hit ... 3 months after its release in Europe it was already in Budget format and for a few months you can find it for 5€... so doesn't really solve anything. Thrik Posted December 21, 2007 Heh Wrestlevania, yeah it's pretty sad that both Prey and Duke Nukem Forever would have been quite fresh and awesome if they'd come out when they were meant to (although I think DNF hit its peak of looking great in 2001). Same as the 1999 TF2 I guess (practically what Battlefield ended up being), although Valve ironically managed to turn that one around by doing the opposite of innovating. elmuerte Posted December 22, 2007 Max Payne was also in development hell for quite some time. Was reading some previews a week ago in a magazine from October 1997 with a release date set in early 1998. Max Payne was using the Prey engine back then, so that should say enough. 3D Realms must be the masters of development hell.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted December 22, 2007 Good lord. How on earth do they keep going?! If DNF doesn't work then I can only imagine they won't be around any more?
miffy495 Posted December 22, 2007 Will someone please explain to me why Duke Nukem is a stronger property than Max Payne? I've been wanting to see Max Payne 3 for ages!
ThunderPeel2001 Posted December 22, 2007 I guess it's the hype. It's almost like when Doom 3 was announced. Duke Nukem was another popular game from around that time. I never played Payne 2... was it any good?
miffy495 Posted December 22, 2007 I guess it depends on what you thought of Payne 1. It's the same thing with some new fun plot twists, a love interest, and a much bigger budget for shiny goodness. Seeing as I loved Max Payne going into 2, I was blown away. All the people who complained about heavy-handed crappiness in Payne were just as unhappy with the sequel, all the people who were into the over-the-top noir goodness (like myself) loved it. Marek Posted December 22, 2007 The Max Payne IP was sold to 2K, who aren't doing anything with it.
Nachimir Posted December 22, 2007 I can't believe people still think they're working on DNF.
brkl Posted December 22, 2007 Apparently they think they're still working on it.
Nachimir Posted December 22, 2007 I think they are just winding people up. I might be wrong.
LOPcagney Posted December 23, 2007 I think I missed Duke Nukem' 3D when it was first released. I wasn't playing video games at the time. I really do think it's one of those games that's going to ride on the nostalgia factor alone. Maybe I'm being judgmental, but I can't imagine myself getting into it now not having the memories of playing it then. =/ It just looks shallow...
