EA sees the light: women have $$$ too!

Recommended Posts

from www.bbc.co.uk/news

"We are only reaching a small proportion - not only geographically but also genetically," said Mr Gardner.

He said if EA cracked the problem the firm "could add a billion dollars to its sales."

He said the industry had to learn from the film business.

"The movie industry doesn't just make films for boys.

"Star wars was the biggest film of all time until Titanic came along; Titanic became the biggest because women went to see it and women went to see it multiple times.

"Just boys saw Star Wars multiple times."

No shit, Sherlock...

Genius! It's all so simple now.

Women will buy computer games multiple times.

Doesn't someone say this every year?

Comedy timing, though. On the same day Sony go "we want to appeal to more girls and the way we've decided to do that is to release a PINK PS2! come get it girls!!!", EA gets up and says "Girls don't want 'pink games'."

Don't forget the cast-iron medieval-style thongs.

...on a *cough* completely unrelated note, I've gotten both my mother and sister addicted to Orbital and Dotstream. But then, those games probably have a lot of pink in them, right?

It was never targeted specifically to a female audience, and The Sims has been bought and played about equally by men and women. (I don't know if the figures I have seen on that included any of the themed expansion packs.)

But it's right that The Sims appeals to men and women much more equally than most games, as does Nintendogs and other recent mainstream successes.

Puzzle Pirates is a game that seems to be split pretty evenly genderwise, and might even have a majority female playerbase. Rather than this statistic alone, I was surprised at the amount of regular players I talked to there who didn't come from a gaming background before starting to play that game. It also seems like there are more females who play male characters in that game than vice versa, which is probably unique among MMORPGs.

No shit, Sherlock...

This is a little less "no shit" than last week's (two weeks ago?) quote where they said that they focused too much on the PSP and realized that people wanted to have fun games. Yeah, really? I want to be bored to tears by constant rehashes! :deranged:

the consumers have proven that actually what they want is fun.

At least this isn't a piece about how "girls play games too!" With lots of profiles of girls playing first person shooters.

That story got old years ago.

Many, many, many years ago I was asked to write a story like that for a major magazine.

I declined. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Since then, I've seen that story more times than I'd care to remember, and it's always lame.

It's like the obligatory "Bang! Zoom! Sock! Comics are for grownups!" story that hits every couple of years.
