It was never targeted specifically to a female audience, and The Sims has been bought and played about equally by men and women. (I don't know if the figures I have seen on that included any of the themed expansion packs.)

But it's right that The Sims appeals to men and women much more equally than most games, as does Nintendogs and other recent mainstream successes.

Puzzle Pirates is a game that seems to be split pretty evenly genderwise, and might even have a majority female playerbase. Rather than this statistic alone, I was surprised at the amount of regular players I talked to there who didn't come from a gaming background before starting to play that game. It also seems like there are more females who play male characters in that game than vice versa, which is probably unique among MMORPGs.

At least this isn't a piece about how "girls play games too!" With lots of profiles of girls playing first person shooters.

That story got old years ago.

Many, many, many years ago I was asked to write a story like that for a major magazine.

I declined. I just couldn't bring myself to do it.

Since then, I've seen that story more times than I'd care to remember, and it's always lame.

It's like the obligatory "Bang! Zoom! Sock! Comics are for grownups!" story that hits every couple of years.
