Nintendo Revolution

Recommended Posts

Actually, I don't. I'm not a big fan of Zelda or Paper Mario or those kinds of stylistic games. I'm not talking about the game developers. What I'm saying is that guys making the Revolution seem to care more about games than the guys making the 360 or PS3.

Yeah, but Nintendo seems the most focused about keeping it about the games, the PS3 and the 360 are both shown off about how they also have dvd capability, music playing + ripping, internet access for stuff other than games, etc. They also only talk about how their console is so powerful, and that the graphics are so powerful, and Microsoft hired a bunch of celebrities to talk about their console, even though some of them sounded like they haven't played a game since Space Invaders.

The same argument could be made about the Splinter Cell series, Project Gotham Racing, KoTOR, Jade Empire, and Halo series for Xbox, or about ICO, the Final Fantasy series, Metal Gear Solid series, and Silent Hill series for PS2.

Those are also mostly third party developers who develope for multiple platforms. Some of those titles are only exclusive to Microsoft or Sony because they were paid huge ammounts of money for exclusive contracts. It was a business decision for them.

Halo was a hotly anticipated game for PC's until Microsoft took notice and swooped down with their bag full of money and bought the whole company and made it Xbox exclusive.

Microsoft's games division has no pulse. Their just a big profit oriented company and make contracts for whatever people are jerking off to at the moment. At least that's how it sometimes appears to me.

Wasn't Halo in development for Mac?

Mac, with the promise of a port to PC. Likely the only reason Halo PC was ever published.

Wow, it's small ... but the materials used seem cheap. Is that plastic I am seeing ?

Aren't we all beyond aware of the fact that the system we've seen is a prototype? Iwata said in the keynote that the "final system" will be smaller than the one he had there.

I imagine the PS3 and Revolution will still be considerably worked on. The Xbox 360 would have to be nearly finalized considering they need a huge amount of time to mass produce and meet the expected demand quota for when it hits stores in November/December.

Reliable sources have told me that the controller will be a 2.5-meter scull. Great for boat games.

Anyone else think that it's a bit ironic that the most interesting feature of a console named Revolution so far, is the support for old games?

These are couple of great quotes:

Kaplan said that Nintendo doesn't want to deliver consumers the same things that Microsoft and Sony do. "I think Microsoft is on the boxing match with Sony. We don't want to be a digital hub for the household. That's not what we do best. I have to say that it has become clearer at this show how different we are from them," she said. "I think some consumers want us to be more like them and they're frustrated by that. But then you have really cool products like Nintendogs and Zelda that show up, and those things wouldn't exist if we were busy doing that. You know, we're going to make millions happy and some very frustrated. But we're still willing to stick with the whole content and innovation."
Finally, Kaplan addressed complaints from Nintendo fans that the company didn't showcase as much Revolution software as it should have. "What [hardcore fans] want us to do is show everything on Revolution today and that just doesn't make sense for us," she said. "We're not launching it for some time. We have a lot of business to do this year and we think it's better to show a little bit and share enough for people to be excited about it. Like the virtual console: having access to nearly every Nintendo-created game over the past 20 years in something that's a really sleek box that's Wi-Fi-enabled. We think that's enough for now. We know people want more, but we're not sure there's a business benefit for us to show more. For competitive reasons, it doesn't make sense for us to do more right now."
We asked Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto if Revolution would play high-definition games and he told us that he wasn't sure if he was allowed to say yet. Still, we expect a bare minimum of 480p support and likely 720p or 1080i, too, given that previous comments from Nintendo execs suggested that the platform would be able to hook up to a computer monitor.
