ysbreker Posted April 25, 2005 WOW. Just wow. If even one third of what they claim on that page gets into the revolution... wow
SoccerDude28 Posted April 25, 2005 All these are cool hardware gimmicks but unless you support it with software, the console will go the way of the virtual boy. Software drives consoles, and that's what Micro$oft is concentrating on in the next generation.
Jake Posted April 25, 2005 Yeah, as much as I disliked the whole "HD Era!" angle J Allard was using while pitching all of the Xbox 360 stuff at GDC this year, I couldn't help myself from appreciating the steps forward Microsoft was taking with the unified dashboard and customization features on the 360. I know huge percentages of the features were included mainly as new revenue streams that will then be marketed back to gamers as "something cool you've always wanted" (eg: paying actual money billed to your Live account to buy a new set of rims for your car in a racing game, surely a feature I've always wanted in a title), but some of the stuff was really nice. Micro$oft should well damn know by now that software (and greedy monopolistic practices, but that's another story) is what sells the hardware.
Roderick Posted April 25, 2005 A 3D screen? Like, a holographic image projected in your living room? Is that even feasible at this age? Cause I'll be damned if I wear crappy goggles every time I play games. I already have glasses, they won't mix easily. Sorry, I have high hopes for the Revolution, but I don't care about hightech stuff like that. I like the cordless controller though. Even though I never really minded it. ysbreker Posted April 25, 2005 I was more awed by the PDA/touchscreen on the controller and the gyroscope thingy that registers the motions you make with the controller than with the whole 3D holo cube thing.
Dingo Chavez Posted April 26, 2005 I'll judge it when I see it, and I'll see it when I see it. Oh, that's right! Mr. T: Well, the general idea is good, but the software is where it's at. FOOL!
Marek Posted April 26, 2005 Apparently the 3D thing would not require glasses, but I'm as confused as anyone.
netmonkey Posted April 26, 2005 Maybe it's one of those magic eye things.
nsps Posted April 26, 2005 Remember that awkward Sega arcade game from 15 years ago, where you controlled 3D holograms in a fight game whose only virtue was this gimmick? Maybe it's like that. (Or the chess-like board game from Star Wars.) It would make since, as the cost of those things must have fallen by now.
Graeme Posted April 26, 2005 The 3D technology that the (linked) article mentions uses goggles which only allow you to see through one eye at a time, through (I think) LCD "shutters" synched with the display. I don't think that Nintendo would go around building and shipping a big, complicated 3D projector... With regards to games consoles beating film technology, the consensus seems to be that the next generation of consoles will drive HD uptake. A lot of the IT industry seems to be getting involved with this format (see the Adobe OpenHD announcement, for example), probably because it'll require big, expensive LCD panels, lots of disk space, and fat processors. b0b Posted April 26, 2005 WTF! Why did it have to be Nintendo to be first to the mad stereoscopic 3d insanity!! Now I can have goddamn green fairies and tiny yellow glowing things and fat italian plumbers dancing around in midair - when I could have PlayStation Xtreme Tits N Ass GoreFightFuckFest 2k6 3D MegaPron Edition! (tipped for release on the EA Sports BIG label apparently) Although actually, that said, 3D holographic Resident Evil 4/5... Jesus... OK I take it back, this pretty exciting. Why? Because it's either going to be another Virtual Boy/DS/we have no judgement when it comes to deploying new technology Nintendo thing, or it could be T3H FUTURE!! A few years ago I googled around looking for someone building the Millenium Falcon board game, and found a couple different things going on. It's entirely possible. Sony bought up one of the companies that were having a shot, but there's a few different approaches. I can't find any of the websites now. That's a bit telling.
