  1. I love the falling from a ladder animation so much
  2. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Hello folks, your resident lone Splatoon-playing Thumb here. My Splatoon LAN event went really well! People had fun and were excited about a future event, which made me so very happy. Lately there have been a few articles popping up about the potential of Splatoon stepping up its competitive aspect; with Nintendo of America partnering with Battlefy to host a series of tournaments in November, and of course the Nintendo Switch trailer showing off a Splatoon tournament. This Redbull Esports article featuring an interview with EndGameTV staff just went up a few hours ago: http://www.redbull.com/us/en/esports/stories/1331826425120/competitive-splatoon-is-ready-for-nintendo-switch. EndGameTV was very kind to share the livestream of my LAN tournament, so I'm really happy that they were approached by Redbull for the article. I hope this wave of momentum we have right now will push us forward and get bigger tournaments with more support from Nintendo in the near future!
  3. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

I thought you own a Wii U? Wait you definitely own a Wii U; I've played your Mario Maker levels. The Wii U gamepad is also 6.2"!
  4. As others have mentioned though, at least the URL tells you exactly what this website does!
  5. I heard about Idle Thumbs when Anita Sarkeesian was a guest on the show! So having guests definitely helps. As for Mario Maker level codes...Nintendo did release a website to help you search for levels and bookmark them. Since you can log into the website using your NNID, you can boot up the game and find your bookmarked levels there as long as you used the same NNID for the website and the console. The website is here! https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/eRonin?type=posted You can replace "eRonin" in the URL with any other NNID to find levels posted by that person
  6. Games where you play as not-the-protagonist are a rarity and I was surprised when I discovered that Xenoblade Chronicles X was one such game. You're not even the deuteragonist; you're a blank slate for the player to experience the world through, while the true main characters around which the story revolves are Elma, your captain, and Lin, her second in command. The game still has you take point during combat and make a few decisions during side-quests, but for the most part your character is really just a grunt who happens to be very good at shooting things. Much of the game's content involves getting to know the other characters through missions in which they are the main actor, so even during many side-missions you are still not the main focus. The game's setting emphasises that there are larger things at play than the player character can comprehend, and is probably one of few games that justifies the player having to do small menial tasks early on since you're not the legendary hero, you're just a foot trooper who needs to earn their pay along with the rest of the colonists.
  7. I hope the Switch supports 8 player local multiplayer, the way the 3DS does! The Wii U managed to support 8 player Smash Bros and there was that one indie game that supported 9-player, so if they want to make the ultimate local multiplayer experience, I don't think they can back down from that.
  8. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

I'm pretty excited about the Switch, as someone who is a fan of the 3DS but already carries a bag with me wherever I go anyway because I'm not fitting a 3DS into my pocket most days. I'm squarely in the camp of being a Nintendo fanboy, and the reveal of a Splatoon update/sequel seals the deal for me. It's interesting that they chose to highlight Splatoon using an esports angle; there are a lot of Smash Bros fans in my circle who is upset that Smash was not the game represented in this way. Anyway, also excited about what looks like a sequel to Mario 3D World! The controller when split off looks awkward as heck and I don't think any amount of gaming on a 3DS is going to prepare me for that. As for 2nd-screen/touch screen business, we've been told the experience of Breath of the Wild on Wii U and NX will be really close to one another, so does anyone know how Breath of the Wild makes use of the Wii U gamepad screen?
  9. Idle Streaming Community: Twitchy, Tasty

I'm subbed to thumbs already, but unfortunately Amazon Prime isn't a thing for me in Australia anyway :/
  10. My ever-games are Smash Bros and StarCraft, which I have played in its various iterations almost constantly for 10 and 8 years respectively. They're multiplayer games which enable a certain level of expressing a personal touch on playing the game, due to the way they encourage experimenting with movement and play-styles. They are also games that have allowed me to meet great people and communities, which is one of the big reasons that keeps me playing these games.
  11. For the longest time I liked Zelda because I thought "here's an action game that doesn't need numbers" but then I realised, of course there are numbers, they're just completely opaque. The upcoming Zelda game has numbers shown since there is a larger variety of weapons and thus the differences between them need to be made more clear. In previous Zelda games usually there are only a handful of swords so it is easy to see how much damage each of them do without presenting the actual number to you. And of course crafting is going to be a big part of Breath of the Wild it seems, though the roots of that were already present in Skyward Sword (and maybe others?)
  12. Splatoon is Ink-redible

Hey all, if you're not doing anything on 23rd Oct (Sydney time), please fly down to Sydney to play in a Splatoon LAN event I'm co-organising k thanks In all seriousness, a lady I met on an Australian Splatoon discord community contacted Nintendo ANZ about an event that we were tentatively planning, and Nintendo actually responded and are giving us Splatoon merchandise for free, to give out as prizes at our event. I'm really excited about this! I've wanted to participate in a Splatoon LAN since last year, but nobody was doing anything, so when I was approached about helping to organise one, I decided to step up and we're both really excited about positive reaction from Nintendo about our event.
  13. Archon mode in StarCraft 2 works great when both players go in knowing what role they will play; hence it is not available for random teams; you have to be in a party with a friend to play. In a custom game, you can actually have more than two players per side, which is hugely chaotic but can be fun I guess? I've never played that way though. There's also another new co-op game-mode in Legacy of the Void that might suit Chris and Nick more if they're no longer interested in a competitive setting; modified campaign missions and new scenarios tweaked to be played co-operatively. This game mode is apparently more popular than every other multiplayer mode (single player of SC2 is still where the bulk of buyers start and stop playing the game) combined, according to a recent interview with the designer.
  14. I was going to write in about the divisible by 9 thing but damn you covered all the bases really well
  15. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

We do actually have a thread for Mario Maker, but it hasn't been active in many many many months: https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/10402-super-mario-maker/ There's a bunch of levels in there to get you started though! With regard to unlocking tools: new sets get unlocked after placing a certain number of blocks, with minimum 15 minute intervals between sets being unlocked (previously 1 whole day! But that was patched) With regard to unlocking characters: amiibo and completing 100-mario challenge (or was it 10-mario? I can't remember!) unlock the default set of characters, and there are event stages that unlock specific characters like Hello Kitty, Ice Climbers, Callie/Marie, and more.
  16. Splatoon is Ink-redible

For Euro Splat Thumbs (there may not be many of you I suppose): http://play.eslgaming.com/splatoon/europe Nintendo of Europe and Electronic Sports League have partnered to bring official Splatoon tournaments weekly + monthly finals for the next 6 months. Prizes include Splatoon merchandise (clothing/hats), with a grand final prize next year of....an NX. Please win some of the monthly tournaments and send me a Takoroka Mesh hat, thanks.
  17. The Nintendo Wii U is Great Thread

Cool, bookmarked your levels! I've been meaning to check out more of this game. Last time I booted it up I just played the event courses for Hello Kitty and Pokemon stuff; I haven't played a community-made level in a while.
  18. That's okay! It's not good. Uses more ammo for less consistent damage.
  19. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

Just FYI this website exists: https://supermariomakerbookmark.nintendo.net/profile/HeerRood?type=posted Replace "HeerRood" with any NNID to find courses made by that person. Signing in using your NNID and marking a course will allow you to load up the game and find that course you marked.
  20. Xenoblade Chronicles X is a game world that I love and would revisit just for the chance to run and fly around in it. I love all the different alien characters in it too; even though they're not voiced, they have a lot of personality. There are still areas I haven't fully explored, and secondary characters I haven't gotten to meet properly. It's honestly one of those games that does like to pad out its content and sell itself on how many hours of gameplay is involved, but I really just want any excuse to revisit that alien planet.
  21. Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire

I'm always so lazy about going to a brick and mortar game shop these days. Have to drag myself to EBgames to get Arceus.
  22. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

For what it's worth, DS games on the Wii U virtual console supports both screens displayed on a single screen
  23. Modest Tech: The NX Generation (Nintendo Switch)

So NX is basically confirmed to use ARM architecture right? So that rules out Wii/Wii U backwards compatibility, but since the 3DS uses ARM, perhaps that is still a possibility. Given that NX is more or less going to be a portable device (based on Eurogamer rumour/reports), I think this is still somewhat likely. At the very least it'll make it easy to port/upscale 3DS titles to maybe fill out the launch window.
  24. Idle Thumbs Streams

I've harped on about wanting to see Dark Souls 1 in your chat, so that's the obvious pick for me. I'll tune in regardless of what you ultimately play of course edit: +1 to Pooh homeruns
  25. It's always a good time! I wonder if we can rope Chris and Nick and the others into playing with us (and streaming it?). I know Danielle only plays on PS4 version
