toblix Posted August 8, 2012 Someone made a bunch of animated gifs from fighting game backgrounds. I don't know what the game is, or games are, but I know I can look at this stuff forever. Here's one:

Thrik Posted August 8, 2012 Absolutely splendid. Often the backgrounds go over my head due to the action being so absorbing so it's nice to see them like this. Here's something similarly awesome that I saw a while ago (you need a HTML5-compatible browser): http://www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/ Apparently this guy did a lot of the illustrations for LucasArts' older games including SOMI and pretty much perfected the 'colour cycling' method of getting nice effects with relatively limited colour palettes. Pretty much a technical marvel as well as an artistic one. Check this variation out for added 'holy shit' (open the options and use the day/night slider, try different scenes too): http://www.effectgames.com/demos/worlds/
brkl Posted August 8, 2012 Why doesn't my phone support animated backgrounds...

Salacious Snake Posted August 8, 2012 That looks like it's from The Last Blade 2! I'm going to see if I can figure out the rest, many of them look familiar. (I have a Neo Geo.) edit: this is a fool's game, but I did spot a few. The deserty one is from King of Fighters 2000. There's a bunch of KOF, Last Blade and perhaps Samurai Shodown happening in that gallery. I'd say it's all from Neo Geo fighters, or at least most of it is. Specifically, they all look like they're from first-party SNK games. The waterfall is from Garou: Mark of the Wolves. The old church with the pigeons and the ruined train yard are from SVC Chaos. Crazy circuitry floor is KOF 99. Fort with cannons is Last Blade 2.

owenjones Posted August 8, 2012 Man there's still something about hand-drawn/animated. Just recently picked up Rayman and it's beautiful. Makes me sad it's so rare.
