SoulChicken Posted March 10, 2010 (edited) More wizard unveilings! Hot on the trails of last week's Diablo 3's in-game-male-wizard-model hot scoop, today shows that the magical flurry of wonder continues unabated we sup the potions of March. Final Fantasy XI had some pretty good wizard costumes in it and I know we've all be waiting with baited breath to see what Final Fantasy XIV has in store for Wizard watchers. Wait no more! Huzzah! Sweet. Alas, they will probably be called Mages, as the Japanese do not dare follow the fearless path blazed (like a Fireball!) by Diablo III and Trine. Murdoc Posted March 10, 2010 I vaugely follow Final Fantasy and I'm getting really confused with the numbers now to the point where i have to wiki it every time someone mentions one or the other. So this is Final Fantasy Online 2, so cool. I'm kind of interested in it, actually. I watched my friend play FF12(whatever that last one was for the ps2 that was singleplayer) and it looked like a FF I'd want to play, my friend also like FF Online 1. My biggest complaint is what's up with the small guys and why the hell aren't they moogles? All I want to do is play a moogle, it doesn't seem like a huge request, but it never happens. SoulChicken Posted March 10, 2010 Moogles are ubiquitous in FFXI (online) but yeah you can't play one. However, there was a recent storyline where you had to take down an evil one. Sweet. The little dudes were called Tarutaru in FFXI and something else in the upcoming one. They were actually pretty cool. The great thing about FFXI was the world, it was just so beautiful and imaginative. You had to walk, ride chocobos, airships or boats to get anywhere so there was a nice sense of adventure. Good for me exploring, a pain for doing quests or grinding. The big problem that a lot of the beautiful areas you would step into and get killed. So if you wanted to see most of the good stuff you had to level up. Which was absurdly difficult and time consuming. So I am excited to see the new one and I'm sure I'll poke around a bit when the game comes out, especially if the art direction and music is of the calibr of the first. Fuzzy Lobster Posted March 10, 2010 Aww.. He's kind of a cute, stumpy wizard. I never played 11, but I was a little bit sad that the moogles in 12 transformed into flying bunnies. They were pretty cute, but I guess I'm too much of a traditionalist (read: huge, stupid dork). For those of you who did play 11, was there much of a storyline or did you just run around? I shied away from the MMO thing so I don't really know anything about the game and I haven't played any other MMOs for a point of reference.
SoulChicken Posted March 10, 2010 The stories in FFXI were absolutely brilliant but very difficult to experience. You needed a group of 6 people to do the quests that strung the story together. A lot of these were very exciting boss battles but the time and organization they took meant that once done, doing it again is the last thing you want to do. For fun this year I went back to play an evening a week with some friends. We were determined to finish what we knew was the best story chain. Took us 6 months. At the end of it you opened up this stunning area which the players called Sea. Its really the coolest thing I've seen in the game but I would guess the majority of the people who played the game never got to see it. The epic feel was cool when it worked out but there are so many people that didn't get to see all the stories. They say they have made this more manageable in the new one, I certainly hope so as the idea of engaging story in an MMO is pretty special. Dear god, I know too much about FFXI. Sea looked cool, the story missions were kinda neat. But otherwise the place was totally empty and disappointing. I played ffxi for a few years and honestly I'm not really a fan of it anymore. I stuck around for friends for a good long while. While there is some cool things in the game, I just think they made a lot of things WAY too time consuming. If they can fix that stuff in the new one, it would be nice. Either way I don't think I'll get into it, as I'm pretty tired of mmos at this point.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted March 11, 2010 It's really interesting to hear all that stuff about XI. Although I've picked it up (on both PC and 360 - *slaps forehead*) I've never actually ever played it. Nice to hear what the pros and cons are -- and unless I make some good friends, willing to playing at the same time as me, it sounds like progressing would be a nightmare. Nice to hear perspective on it, though.
brkl Posted March 11, 2010 It is such a stupid thing to have the online games in the main series of Final Fantasy instead of having clearly differentiated names.
miffy495 Posted March 11, 2010 Doesn't bother me at all. Final Fantasy doesn't have a "main series" as far as I can tell. There's just a lot of games with different stories and different play mechanics from different people that happen to have similar music and names which help them sell like crazy. Brannigan Posted March 11, 2010 wait what? they still make final fantasy games? I thought they were all movies Most of them are! There's actually gameplay in ffxi, except most of it involves punching you in the nuts for 6 hours until you get something done.
