Hotel Dusk Sequel

Recommended Posts

Still being classified as a rumor, but it's looking pretty certain to me. Originally posted at this Japanese site, folks at Neogaf have translated that entry as well as some apparent impressions when it was shown at a Japanese retailer conference. The translated title is Last Window: Midnight Promise.

Overview:

- Set in 1980 Los Angeles

- Takes place in the Cape West Apartments

- Stand alone game from Hotel Dusk, though might have references to the first

- Kyle Hyde is still the main character

- First major feature is the ignore feature where rather than butting in to something you can choose to ignore them

- Other major feature is an in-game novel called "Last Window" where a new chapter unlocks after you finish a chapter in the game

- Novel has variations depending on how you play the game

- rumble cart support

Even if all of that is not correct, as long as the game is coming I am excited. Hotel Dusk is my favorite DS title and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't gotten their hands on it. The sequel is apparently coming to Japan January 14, 2010 so hopefully it won't be too long afterwards that the game is translated and released worldwide. What do the thumbs think of the first game and are you excited for this one?

I played it for a while but lost interest very quickly. To me it seemed to have all of the qualities that keep adventure games from branching out to a wider audience. Obtuse puzzles, frustrating logic, and just a general feeling of clunkiness. That said, I loved what they tried to do with the story and the art style, so if they can fix the weirdness of the game itself, I think the setting and characters have some real potential. Here's hoping the sequel does gameplay right in addition to atmosphere.

I had a love-hate relationship with Hotel Dusk. I enjoyed the setting, art style, and story, but it took everything that I hate about adventure games and stretched them to frustrating extremes. Unless you did every single action in the exact order that they wanted you to, nothing would happen. There was no room for exploration or experimentation.

Hotel Dusk looked great but was unplayable. I completed it, but only because I'm an idiotic self-flagellating self-loathing retard. AKA an lover of fine adventure games.

I have strong fear of this sequel, only because I might be dumb enough to buy it, and complete it. I usually read a book before going to bed, but the prospect of an adventure game on a handheld console is sometimes too much for my weak self to resist and take precedence, even if its an exercise in frustration and bad design.

Okay, good. I'm not the only one who got a couple hours into Hotel Dusk and couldn't play it anymore - it got such universal praise that I felt bad about not liking it that much. Now I can finally trade away that useless cart.

I played Hotel Dusk for a few hours before giving up. For me, it was the damn text speed. I read way faster than the text would appear and found myself constantly tapping to make it skip and go faster but was still agonizingly slow.

I always meant to go back and finish it. Of course, I say that about *every* game.

I can definitely see where you guys that don't like it are coming from. It could definitely be frustrating; there were several times when I knew I was doing the right thing to solve a certain puzzle but because it wasn't exactly how the game wanted it, it wouldn't let me progress. But I still loved it, maybe I'm just a sucker for mystery stories like this.

Huh. To me, Hotel Dusk was almost exactly like reading a book. Great narrative, easy puzzles -- the only "bad" thing about it was that you had to do some walking to trigger certain events. But since the location wasn't that big, it didn't really bother me. Looking forward to the sequel.

I did own the original Another Code for DS and bought the Wii sequel for that and I was really excited with Hotel Dusk when it was still to be released but not yet out.

Then when it came out I kind of started to lose interest quickly. I've always thought myself as a similar type of person Jake described himself, but I just couldn't. I did try the game once but naahh... that was all about this game. Looks cool, but isn't that good as a game.

I also have a kind of fear that I will somehow get excited about this sequel and then just crush all my hopes and dreams about it by actually playing it.
