Forza Motorsport 3

There's also a little bit of that "hey, I really want to master this track" so you get into that cycle where shaving half a second off is actually incredibly rewarding when you're in the eighth lap of a ten lap race.

I adore that, especially if I've just tuned a car I've raced before on the same track and I'm able to smash through my previous times. I also love the way shaving down your lap times like this over longer races really encourages you to drive faster and smoother with every lap.

But it also really encourages you to take risks; clipping curbs more tightly, braking later into corners and putting the power down sooner and more aggressively as you exit.

If you've got a great car and you're into the rhythm of the track, I'm often sad when I do finally complete that last lap and it's all over. Forza 2 was masterful at this, so I'm hoping the third game's initially blunt-seeming controls don't lessen that adrenaline buzz in the sequel.

It seems like every day, I'm more and more pumped for this game. Today I did a little bit of a Forza 3 video blitz, so I've got some pretty impressive and telling stuff about the game.

First is the Giant Bomb Quick Look of the game, which shows how the menus work, how the career mode is set up, and how the marketplace works:

http://www.giantbomb.com/quick-look-forza-motorsport-3/17-1475/

Next is an interview from with Garnett Lee and a couple of guys from Turn 10... since it was from E3, the coverage is a little bit scattershot but they do talk a little bit about how they designed some of the fictional maps and their cockpit view:

So, at this point, I was basically just looking for Forza porn. These last two videos are a little less informative, but they're cool nonetheless. First is a video from Project Blackjack, which is a team of players hired by Turn 10 to basically make their game look rad. This is some really awesome orchestrated drifting, and more functionally it shows the range of options of the video mode, since I believe the video was captured with the in-game tool:

And finally, this is some dude's video of the three-monitor setup + driving seat + Microsoft wheel that was available at TGS. I want to have ridiculous amounts of money and have this... right now:

So, yeah, sort of a long post, but hopefully this is a pretty decent aggregation of the better videos of Forza 3. God, I'm totally nerding out for this game.

So I don't really like driving games, although I really liked Test Drive Unlimited for its awesomeness. Before that I guess the Lotus games and Super Cars were my favorite games. And Stunts and Stunt Car Racer. And Vette! I managed to found a hidden section of the game in Vette one time.

So, Forza 3... for some reason I've finally seen some magical number of awesome screen shots of impeccable sports cars drifting around corners, and I'm starting to want this game. Does anyone here have Forza experience? I seem to remember one of you --was it Wrestle? -- mentioning playing Forza 2. How does this game compare to, say, Super Cars?

Speaking of Stunts...if Criterion (the Burnout people) would make a Stunts style game complete with horrific crashes I would be happy (if anyone made it I'd be happy). Crashday wasn't horrible...but I enjoyed it more because of what it was than how well it did it. Trackmania is great, but I miss being able to crash and watching the replay of said crash (even if the crashes in Stunts really required you to use your imagination...it was still great to launch out the side of a loop and gain a lot of altitude in the race car and then fall back to earth).

On the subject of Forza, anybody know if MS is making any effort to allow some of the nicer wheels (with 900 degree or whatever turning radiuses and nice shifters) to work on the 360 with this game (other than the really expensive Porche branded wheels).

One thing that really bummed me about F2: I bought the MS wheel. It was pretty good, the force feedback, and pedals etc. made it a fun experience. Playing fully manual though, sometimes the game would interpret a single downshift as a double, and drop two gears - leading to either you spinning off or the engine blowing up depending on the realism levels. I returned it to the shop, and F3 began to gather dust.

[Edit: I said Forza 3, when I meant 2]

Gah, that double-shifting thing sounds horrible! :(

What's slightly worrying is that I've seen no mention or promotion of the Microsoft wheel for 360 at all since Forza 2 was released. Has it been discontinued?

Anyone know if it has any offroad/rally tracks?

I'm fairly confident it doesn't, with the GT guys owning the rights to WRC.

No, Forza is strictly road racing. The new multiplayer high score drifting modes sound like a lot of fun though, which might make up for the lack of dirt/snow track-style driving.

Is it bad I am more looking forward to the customisation (visuals) than the racing?

Yup, just submitted my pre-order on Amazon. The Giant Bomb video review really pushed me over the edge, if I wasn't over already.

The E3 trailer pushed me into getting it...

Me too, I was suckered in by the pretty menus.

Holy shit, some of the stuff that people have made on the storefront is incredible.

Also this is awesome, Playing on medium with auto brake off. The AI will sometimes completely fuck up (i.e. take a U turn too quickly and drive straight off of the track, other than that I can't fault it.

Didn't get time to pre-order FM3 in the end, but still managed to find a copy after work last night. Played about 1.5hrs of the game and it's clear I was wrong about the handling model being dampened in the new game.

If anything, it strangely feels even sharper and more responsive than the second game, and I was able to flick cars through corners - balancing tiny adjustments in braking and throttle - to get some glorious power slides going in even something as tiny as an Abarth 500. Bloody fantastic!

So, who's still up for a regular race night then? I'm thinking we should call it "Formula Thumb"...

Yeah I'm up for it. brilliant name by the way, the multiplayer is pretty cool for custom games (really extensive options).

Was talking to Miffy about it last night and he seems to be up for it when he gets hold of a copy.

Quick question: would one be expected to not suck at these? Would one reduce the other participants' enjoyment by partaking while sucking or even not being very good?

I doubt it, plus if you play with all of the assists on you should be able to stick with other people reasonably well

I can't believe how much I am enjoying this game, there is nothing that I don't like. Everything is ridiculously slick, and gorgeous. I particularly love some of the mountain tracks, I have even started tuning cars an upgrading (I made my Camaro 825 bhp and able to go round corners).

For multiplayer I suggest trying out Wednesday of this week, so then Those that live in the Americas have had a chance to pick it up and play a bit. if this is good with people.

Awesome story: I entered the bonus content download code and started the download of the bonus cars package. Instead of selecting "download in background" or whatever, I accidentally clicked "cancel download". Now I can't resume the thing, because it's not in the list of downloadable shit, and I can't redeem the code again.
