LOPcagney Posted July 17, 2008 Has anyone else checked it out yet? I really liked it. Funny, relatively good music.
miffy495 Posted July 17, 2008 Oh my god that was fantastic. These aren't the hammer. ... ... ... ...the hammer is my penis.
Scrobbs Posted July 17, 2008 Anyone got into How I Met Your Mother? It's got that geezer in it as BArney, he rocks in that too. I watched a few episodes and am now addicted.
Nachimir Posted July 17, 2008 That was excellent. I saw a few people mention it here and there last week, but didn't catch who was behind it. Thanks for reminding me LOPcagney
ThunderPeel2001 Posted July 17, 2008 Good stuff. What's it in aid of? Anyone know?
DanJW Posted July 17, 2008 Can't wait for episode III Interesting to read that Whedon did it following the writers' strike.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted July 17, 2008 I think he did it during the strike, didn't he? Well anyways, a big heads up: Act III goes live tomorrow and then (the day after) it's gone.
ysbreker Posted July 17, 2008 Dr. Horrible! Awesome!! Fillion is awesome in this!
DanJW Posted July 18, 2008 Is it me, or does Joss Whedon really need to write a Broadway musical? Also then bring it to London plz.
Roderick Posted July 18, 2008 At first I thought that Dr Horrible was Fillian as well, it took me a while to realize he wasn't. They look mightily alike though. As regards the songs: I love a good musical. Between this and Buffy the musical, Whedon shows a penchant for writing nice songs, but they always lack a certain sophistication that most 'real' musicals have. Stuff like Rocky, JCS, Nightmare Before Christmas, hell, even AD/BC, are all made up of evergreen material. Whedon's songs are a bit shallow and sappy in comparison. Despite the interesting ideas (overlapping/contrasting refrains sung by two people) they're not very layered or brilliant. [EDIT] Except for the Bad Horse bits with that unfiltered Rawhide vibe. Sheer genius.
eljay Posted July 18, 2008 Except it is Nathan Fillion, quite blatantly.... his name is even in the credits ¬ ¬
Nachimir Posted July 18, 2008 Nathan Fillion is Captain Hammer, not Dr. Horrible. Dr. Horrible is Neil Patrick Harris, he of Starship Troopers. (My, what a grammatical train wreck this post turned into).

ThunderPeel2001 Posted July 18, 2008 Hello?! Surely you're talking about Doogie Howser! Whedon's songs are a bit shallow and sappy in comparison. Despite the interesting ideas (overlapping/contrasting refrains sung by two people) they're not very layered or brilliant. Agreed. The music is pretty lame... and I really dislike lame music in musicals. (I still really enjoyed the show, though - mainly because Doogie NPH was so good and the concept was well handled.) Talking about the concept: Can anyone see the conclusion coming a mile off? I *hope* they don't just do a "woman realises both guys are bad, leaves them both -- Horrible and Hammer go back to their old ways. The end". We'll see if they invert the convention... Roderick Posted July 18, 2008 I'm rooting for the woman turning out to be evil all the time and, discovering Horrible's true nature, goes for him after helping him kill Hammer. Really liked the second act's ending by the way, with the giant doctor trampling the city. Good emotional build-up there! Signed Bad Horse
DanJW Posted July 18, 2008 That's what I'm hoping for too, Rodi. Just as long as the Doctor doesn't become a hero. Maybe she is actually Bad Horse... As for the songs, well I'm sure he could do greater thing if he was working with an experienced stage composer.
DanJW Posted July 19, 2008 Well, gotta hand it to the man, he didn't go for the obvious ending Songs were't as good in act iii though.
Roderick Posted July 19, 2008 Wow, what a shocker =) After all the 50s lovey-doveyness I certainly hadn't expected this. But it's great nonetheless, I really like this little villain-piece and am certainly considering getting it on DVD when it appears.
ThunderPeel2001 Posted July 19, 2008 Convention inverted *sniffle* - Surprised there wasn't some sort ray of light at the end - surprisingly downer ending, that didn't even resonate that much
Roderick Posted July 19, 2008 A 'bad' ending like this could easily be a letdown, and to be frank, it doesn't work 100%, but what saves it for me is that ultimately, the story is about Dr. Horrible's ascension on the ladder of evilness and when viewed from that angle it's a very complete story. There's the seduction to give up his dream and become good, but then classic tragedy strikes and the bitterness is almost palpable, and in the end Dr. Horrible's story is that much more tragic and interesting. Just think about it: he went from being a totally clichéd comic book villain, a caricature of himself, to a much rounder character with a great deal of pathos on him. It's a bit of a shame that Penny got an abrupt end, but it does make sense from the 'birth of a villain' perspective
Nachimir Posted July 19, 2008 I thought they really failed to round out captain hammer in any way, and by the time his song was in full swing it was outstaying its welcome. Overall though, I think the very last shot is an excellent punchline that contradicts the words he's singing
brkl Posted July 19, 2008 The ending was just great. The last shot especially...
DanJW Posted July 19, 2008 Yeah, it's basically an origin story. From the credits we can see the other members of the Evil League of Evil: Professor Normal Fake Thomas Jefforson Tie-Die Dead Bowie Fury Leika Snake Bite Bad Horse (played to perfection by Dobber) We also saw the Pink Pummeler and the Purple Pimp. The myspace comic gives us a bit more time with Captain Hammer (Have a friend that excels in maths or science? Report him!).
