Roderick Posted July 18, 2008 At first I thought that Dr Horrible was Fillian as well, it took me a while to realize he wasn't. They look mightily alike though. As regards the songs: I love a good musical. Between this and Buffy the musical, Whedon shows a penchant for writing nice songs, but they always lack a certain sophistication that most 'real' musicals have. Stuff like Rocky, JCS, Nightmare Before Christmas, hell, even AD/BC, are all made up of evergreen material. Whedon's songs are a bit shallow and sappy in comparison. Despite the interesting ideas (overlapping/contrasting refrains sung by two people) they're not very layered or brilliant. [EDIT] Except for the Bad Horse bits with that unfiltered Rawhide vibe. The music is pretty lame... and I really dislike lame music in musicals. (I still really enjoyed the show, though - mainly because Doogie NPH was so good and the concept was well handled.) Talking about the concept: Can anyone see the conclusion coming a mile off? I *hope* they don't just do a "woman realises both guys are bad, leaves them both -- Horrible and Hammer go back to their old ways. The end". We'll see if they invert the convention... Roderick Posted July 18, 2008 I'm rooting for the woman turning out to be evil all the time and, discovering Horrible's true nature, goes for him after helping him kill Hammer. Roderick Posted July 19, 2008 A 'bad' ending like this could easily be a letdown, and to be frank, it doesn't work 100%, but what saves it for me is that ultimately, the story is about Dr. Horrible's ascension on the ladder of evilness and when viewed from that angle it's a very complete story. There's the seduction to give up his dream and become good, but then classic tragedy strikes and the bitterness is almost palpable, and in the end Dr. Horrible's story is that much more tragic and interesting. Just think about it: he went from being a totally clichéd comic book villain, a caricature of himself, to a much rounder character with a great deal of pathos on him. It's a bit of a shame that Penny got an abrupt end, but it does make sense from the 'birth of a villain' perspective Share this post Link to post Share on other sites
Nachimir Posted July 19, 2008 I thought they really failed to round out captain hammer in any way, and by the time his song was in full swing it was outstaying its welcome. From the credits we can see the other members of the Evil League of Evil: Professor Normal Fake Thomas Jefforson Tie-Die Dead Bowie Fury Leika Snake Bite Bad Horse (played to perfection by Dobber) We also saw the Pink Pummeler and the Purple Pimp.
