Jake Posted October 21, 2006 Mario Galaxy rocks. It's the best Wii game I've seen, and it's the reason I'm getting the system. It is 100% a mario game. Trust me, I've played it. It's the game that convinced me that the Wii was more than just a gimmick. The interface tweaks are genuinely fun, and do much more for the Mario gameplay formula than you'd think at first glance. Agreed 100%. I wrote about Mario Galaxy for Shack as part of their E3 coverage and at the time and I was really surprised by how traditional it was. I wasn't sure what to make of that - I was expecting to sit down and be presented with some whole new crazy way to control Mario, and was really thrown when it was "just" a proper-feeling sequel to Mario 64 with some nuanced controls added by the Wii remote. At this point it's all settled down a bit in my brain and, yeah, I'm super excited, for pretty much exactly the reasons Jason posted above.
nsps Posted October 22, 2006 And that racoon suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 (considered by many the "best" Mario) was a totally new idea at the time. Yeah, but SMB 3 also had a lot of elements from the original, especially after SMB 2 (aka Doki Doki Panic). I'm playing New Super Mario Bros. right now, and that seems in the same vein as the progression from 3. The thing is, the side-scrolling is a big part of the format. The 3D Sonic games used the same type of boards and enemies as the 2D games, but the levels felt very different because the speed factor didn't really work as well. I agree that the series needs to continue to evolve to stay interesting, and everyone expects games to be 3D nowadays. I just wanted to point out that only devoting levels to paradise vacation spots is a bit different from adding a raccoon suit. Galaxy does, however, have the potential to be much more versatile. Roderick Posted October 23, 2006 New Super Mario Bros felt very stagnant to me, despite the onslaught of added things. It was a lot of fun, but also an ever-increasing feeling of deja-vu. I don't know what this means, but maybe old-school Mario is starting to bore me, and no inclusion of walljumps and buttstomps can fight it. More radical change is needed and maybe Galaxy is it. (Although the 3D series haven't bored me so far, neither have they captured me extremely. I completed Sunshine and appreciated it quite a bit despite its infuriatingly difficult bits and sometimes uninteresting level design, and I went halfway through Mario 64, which had cooler levels.) (Now that I think about it, the only level in Sunshine I adored was the harbour where there were huge vertical constructions for some real Mario balancing acts. The rest of the levels really weren't that fantastic and memorable, unfortunately. They were fun, but no more.)
Jake Posted October 23, 2006 I don't know what this means, but maybe old-school Mario is starting to bore me, and no inclusion of walljumps and buttstomps can fight it. I occasionally thought that might be the case while playing New SMB, but then I went back and revisited Yoshi's Island on the SNES and realized that really 2D Mario can still feel totally fresh and unique, but New SMB really banks very heavily on nostalgia. It's a great game, and I enjoyed the hell out of it and its 2D Mario platforming action, but it's nowhere near as unique feeling as SMB 3 or Yoshi's Island. doremi Posted October 31, 2006 I dunno if this has been posted, but this looks like an entire level of mario galaxy with a boss battle too. Never saw it before complete myself.
BooJaka Posted October 31, 2006 Wow! The video is so stupidly awesome. There's nothing particularly new in it but it's nice to see it being played properly as opposed to the stop/start of other videos

I'm looking forward to Yoshi's Island 2, though, even if it's probably just more of the same. It's just bound to be loads of fun.
