What are the Idle Forums' thoughts on AMVs?

I think they're usually terrible, but I have a soft spot for a few hilarious/really good ones.

I have a soft spot for a couple of good ones from way back when in high school.

That Nichijou one is nuts, though. I feel like I just watched the show, but I didn't recognize multiple vignettes, so maybe I need to rewatch it...?

Haha I was gonna say I apparently forgot how absolutely insane Nichijou was. High School Boys is almost tame in comparison, so I almost want to retract the comparison, except the format is still basically the same. (Still really good, though.)

The AMV scene is one of those many things I've almost completely reversed on since I discovered anime in high school. I used to hate them, unequivocally. Now I love anything that's well done, even if I don't know what the anime is. I just sort of appreciate the craft of it. X:

AMV Hell is also particularly great.

EDIT: That reminds me that I've got Trigan: Badlands Rumble on my to-watch list. Worth watching? I plan to rewatch Trigun in the process because it's been a long time, so...

My main complaint about AMVs and the like nowadays is that they often crowd out clips of the actual show on YouTube, which is very irritating.

Trigun: Badlands Rumble is a fun time, but unfortunately they chose to follow the tone of the early episodes, not particularly to preserve the continuity, about which the movie is not terribly concerned anyway, but because they wanted a light action-adventure romp, which is good but not what makes Trigun great. It's worth ninety minutes of your life to watch once, at least.

That is a valid complaint. Most of them are terribly done, too. Welp.

Also this triggered me going back and watching older AMV Hells which I don't think I've ever done before. I think I've only seen the past few, and some of the minis. Wow this shit is kinda offensive! Like... rape and racism. I expected plenty of bouncing boobs because anime, but not that. I guess I shouldn't be surprised. It is the internet.

Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi continues to be fucking bonkers and is definitely an insane parody anime.

Without going into it to much It does develop a proper plot a bit later (which you will then realise was foreshadowed quite a bit)

0, /0, and to a lesser extent 2 were all as deliberately offensive as possible. Also, it's tradition for the first clip to be a ridiculously hypersexualized anime accompanied by shitty metal.

Ah, good to know. Yeah 2 was the one that made me go huh-whaaa? 1 wasn't so bad. Started watching 3 but then remember they are an hour long and decided to come back to it later, hah. Still well crafted. I'm downloading the torrent with all of them so I can watch them without early YouTube compression, hopefully.

Honestly, you shouldn't even bother with 0 or /0. They're mostly straight-up outright porn.

In their defense, one of them does have "Invisible Touch" paired with Elfin Lied, which is genius.

If I'm being completely honest... I will probably watch them anyway. This shit fascinates me. Though if they're an hour long, I probably won't.

Doesn't AMV Hell 6.66 have it with the Eva dummy system scene? That's almost as good.

it takes control

and slowly tears you apart

I need somebody to tell me how to feel about Space Dandy.

I think it's doing some sort of interesting things. But I also think it's a lark. I know that something can be multiple things at the same time, but I'm just having a hard time parsing this one. I'm not even sure if I like it or not.

That's how I felt when I dropped it halfway through it's first season. I actually intend to go back because when I like it I really like it. But when I don't like it, it's just... totally boring.

Also I finished Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi. It was worth watching. Definitely a huge parody on a lot of things, but it made sense, thematically. Was strange to start it and assume it was pure Excel Saga style of anime, but eventually reach the point where it felt like something legitimate. Lots of giant bouncing boobs, though. Anime.

Started Eureka Seven: Ao. Much like its predecessor it's very nice looking. I love the art, guys. Love it. Also much like it's predecessor it starts out almost just pure fun and adrenaline. I hope it continues to be that, because that's all I really want.

I remember getting bored & giving up on E7:Ao the arts pretty sure, but really the story is kinda terrible. I really quite enjoyed the original & even the alternate timeline retelling) but for some reason this just doesn't work for me.

On a brighter note I've enjoyed pretty much everything about Nozaki-kun's so far. I really like the way it plays with it's 'generic art style' choice, and it has a great sense for the absurdity on many anime & manga tropes.

I just downloaded this! It looks really good and is totally up next after I finish slogging through Black Lagoon (which has aged terribly in the past half-decade).

I'm surprised to hear Black Lagoon doesn't hold up, do you mean technically? Or in terms of it's story & tone feeling dated?

& while I remember it, can my fellow readers advise me whether it's worth watching the persona series considering I have exactly 0 time spent with the franchise?

I'm halfway through and being driven up the wall by the uneven tone. The setting is very sober and realistic, but then it's populated with a glut of over-the-top badasses that I can't take seriously at all. It feels like the anime was conceived by one very clever writer, complete with the businessman-turned-pirate protagonist, and then other lesser writers filled out all the supporting characters with broadly similar goofy-yet-hardcore cliches. The amount of time spent wanking over the ex-Spetsnaz Russian boss and the jolly Chinese boss was what really started pulling me out of it, and then when they introduced nuns with guns after already having introduced a maid with a gun, I just couldn't stay on board. Roberta's great, but she'd be so much better if she wasn't just one in a long lineup of action-movie caricatures.

Basically, they ought to have decided whether they were making Macross or Gurren Lagann, but they tried to have both instead. I feel like this happened a lot in post-Cowboy Bebop anime, and Black Lagoon is not nearly as bad as Gungrave, but it was still a very common problem, fitting larger-than-life characters in an ultra-realistic setting.

Yeah I watched the Black Lagoon OVA (Roberta's Blood, maybe?) at some point recently and I wasn't as into it as I was the original series. I wasn't sure if it was because the OVA just wasn't as good (still possible!) or because Black Lagoon just isn't that great. EDIT: I may be misremembering my opinion of Roberta's Blood. I might have even liked it at the time. Or claimed to? Well, regardless, my wishy-washy memory and/or opinion sort of speak loud enough in regard to what I think of Black Lagoon.

Codicier: Ah, that's a shame. I, too, really enjoyed the original. Apparently a lot of my friends strongly disagree with me re: E7, but fuck 'em! Well, I'll keep watching regardless. Hopefully I don't feel inclined to give up and can at least enjoy the art. Did I mention I like the art? It's so clean and colorful and bright and I like the art a lot.

I remember the 1st two episodes of the Original Black lagoon feeling like a excellent self contained action story, there's just something about Rock's look of Schadenfreude when his plan comes together which was just near perfect.

Um I guess if you're interested? The anime does a good job of treading the general plot lines of the game, without the grind.

However, the way anime tells the tale of the game is weird. So there's P4: The Animation, which is pretty much the general plot-line of the game. I have to confess I didn't watch it all, but apparently it ends with the bad ending. (Basically, in the game, there is one unavoidable event which decides what ending your going to get. It's the most stupid part of the game, because it revolves around a dialogue tree where if you incorrectly choose 1 of the 5 options presented, you just get the bad ending. And you have to get the correct option 5 times in a row before you can do the final boss. Which is super lame, and really unobvoius. )

Then there's the P4 Movies, which is either in 4 parts, starting from the beginning, but gives you the 'good' ending, or just one movie, where it shows the 'good' ending. I'm not sure.

And then finally there's P4 Golden: The Animation, which again is a re-telling, but just focusing on the new character that's in the PS Vita P4. Which is super weird as it jumps all over the plot, and doesn't even mention huge chunks of it, just that all of a sudden people are your friends. It's currently airing, so I don't know how it'll end.

So yeah, if you've no interest in the game (which is really good), give the anime a shot, as it does a good job of getting the story down, which is the most interesting part of the game. I feel you might miss out on the love-lines and social rank stuff, as there's hours of content that they can't put in. :(

I'd have loved to try the game, but I just don't buy dedicated game systems, my game PC is my work PC & my ipad my way of working when away from home and those are what I play on. (Which reminds me I really should finish Ghost Trick on iOS)

Will have to check which ones they had streaming on crunchyroll, think it was P4:The Animation

PS2 emulation is good enough to run Persona 4 these days, I think.
