Half-Life 2: Aftermath

Recommended Posts

Aren't you playing as Gordon, though? In which case picking up right after Half-Life 2 would involve you standing around in a pitch black room for a totally indeterminate amount of time.

Oh.. good point... er... maybe its some bizarre Kafka-esque thing? (Freaky, I was joking about Kafka-derived FPS games on another forum recently... :shifty: )

(That was a joke, by the way.)
As a nose-in-the-air intellectual I am insulted. Pox upon both your houses!

Eh? I thought that designers should just stay ahead of the game, so to speak. A lot of games are miserable, depressing, torment-filled, turbidity; making Kafka-esque games seems to be following the trend to the natural conclusion! Instead of making you miserable as a by-product, designers will focus on doing this as a principle design goal! Satisfying games will be replaced entirely with experiences that are harrowing for player AND character. The concept of "victory" will be redefined as "enduring to the bitter end". It'll be great

(I was kinda hoping the Call of Cthulhu would be a bit like this, to be honest...

:shifty: )

Teehee, "Kafka" sounds like a swear word.

Try calling someone a "Kantian", or just announce loudly at parties "I like Kant!"

Well... that was a completely useless article. While I'm glad the same voice actors are back, that's not exactly the kind of juicy tidbit I was wanting.

Wanting, mind you. Not expecting. I know better than that.

Half Life 2 dissapointed me because of it's repetitiveness. The enemies were the same throughout the entire game, and the setting didn't change significantly or affect the gameplay at all- the strategy never changed to me, and I don't think they developed the plot well at all.

Right now, Aftermath is looking to be the same thing. I'm seeing the same settings with the same enemies, and it is bummin' me out- who cares if an ant lion is in the city this time? What I wanted more from Half Life is a cinematic experience, like the immersion the first game provided. All of the gameplay in Half Life shifted as marines were introduced and different enemies and settings. The plot played out interestingly and sensibly, and I felt it was a much better game.

Hopefully Aftermath will take the player to much different places and deliver different experiences than the run-and-gun Half Life 2.

EDIT:

Just watched the trailer- I do like the dialogue and the way the characters seem to be playing out, as well as fightint alongside Alyx. My hopes are a little up!

Dare I say it looks more survival horrorlike? I'm not really an expert on survival horror type games, but if stalkers are not zombies then I am the Pope.*

I hope the stalkers can go a bit faster than they do in the ending sequence of HL2. ¬¬

I'm currently replaying Half-Life 2 (and all the other big FPS games of 2004) for the second time and I think I just found a new appearance by G-Man in the game just slighty after Ravenholm. Isn't there some page in the internet where all the sightings have been listed?

I remember visiting such a page once, it had screenshots and shit.

I've been watching ma main homie punk ass fool nigga playing it and I swear some of the maps have changed slightly since last I played. As if they've been adding new shit in some bits and pieces. For example, one of the bases in the channel, the one where you had to blow up some barrels to release some debree to break through a wall... this place... I could swear that the first time I played this portion, that orange cart -- the one on the right, far away, by the door -- I could swear it wasn't there!

I'm pretty sure that was there. I remember getting behind it and pushing until I was close enough to grenade the Combine machine gunner.

Man... I totally didn't register it until he was playing. I would grab one of the barrels and crouch and then hold the barrel between myself and the gunner fellow until I got to where I could just drop the barrel and shoot the fucker.
