Kolzig Posted March 17, 2005 Ubisoft has announced its 2005-2006 product lineup, revealing a lot of sequels in development at the French developer/publisher. Not so interested in any of those, but I really really really want Lumines!
Duncan Posted March 18, 2005 I really hope that this will be the last Prince of Persia, or rather the last XTREME PRINCE OF VAGUE FOREIGN REGION. Fortunately, I'm pretty sure that it will be, mostly because everyone seems to be strongly into that whole trilogy deal nowadays. Plus with Warrior Within they were definitely setting up this next game to be the most ultimate, significant, violent, bestest Prince of Persia game ever. Although I could be reading this all wrong, I'm still not at all sure what HAPPENED at the end of Warrior Within. It was like the writers were getting off on being convoluted. Or they were just shitty storytellers.
Marek Posted March 18, 2005 UbiSoft's strategy so far has been to produce the odd numbered titles in Montreal and produce the even numbered titles in Shanghai or some B-team at Montreal. POP '1' was done by the ass-kicking Montreal team. POP '2' was done by an entirely different team, and their project started before POP 1 was out the door. Splinter Cell - Montreal Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorow - Shanghai Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory - Montreal (started before Pandora Tomorrow was released) etc. I'm not sure if this is entirely 100% accurate in terms of details but this is basically the way they've set things up. The big question is now, how far will they go until a series has run out? 4 games? 5? 6? 7??? I think a lot of these series will suffer the Star Trek syndrome (so much get produced that eventually anticipation is gone and nobody cares anymore) if they don't pause at the right moment. I think for Ubisoft's Prince of Persia the magic number was 2. I agree with you, though. It's so much better to end on a high note than 'oh, are they still making that'? Actually, like with your Star Trek example, that syndrome seems to happen a lot more with television than with games (X-Files, I'm thinking). That's actually part of the reason why I'm legitimately looking forward to Myst V. Although Myst, admittedly, is kind of at the point where the only thing people really care about is whether it's in 2D or not. Still, I really like that Cyan's actually deciding to END it rather than saying 'well, we could make these Myst things forever!' and then have the series cancelled before they could get to an ending they actually wanted to do. Well if you look at some other franchises, they seem to keep going on. Mario anybody? And then there is Mortal Kombat. It had it quadrilogy as a fighter, then it went into action-adventure slump then it's 2 new fighter games and now again into action-adventures. And now midway has promised us a mortal kombat every year. I really really hope that UBI montreal will scrap everything from the second prince of persia game and start from scratch on this third installment. But I also hope that pink elephants can fly. Jake Posted March 18, 2005 "Mario anybody" what? Non-spinoff Mario games come out once in a blue moon, and are highly anticipated because of it. Same with all the big Nintendo franchises.
Kolzig Posted March 18, 2005 I really really hope that UBI montreal will scrap everything from the second prince of persia game and start from scratch on this third installment. Well, not everything, just the stupid wannebe goth graphic style, and "I'm a badass att1tude prince" stuff. The actual gameplay etc. was still good. And please no more Godsmack title screen musics. But start from scratch is also a good thing, that way everything is new and it can be it's own game, and not just your typical sequel.
SoccerDude28 Posted March 18, 2005 "Mario anybody" what? Non-spinoff Mario games come out once in a blue moon, and are highly anticipated because of it. Same with all the big Nintendo franchises. I was referring to the franchise rather than the genre. The actual platformers are top-notch. But now there is a Mario everything (Marrio Tennis, golf, karting, pinball, etc..) and Nintendo seems to want to add the name Mario before every game it creates. lailoken Posted March 18, 2005 Agreed, they should be more carefull with their biggest IP.
Jake Posted March 18, 2005 I suspect (hope) Ubi will have at least a couple of surprises at E3...
Marek Posted March 19, 2005 Although I'm sick of Mario, sick of his immediate associates, and also a little bit sick of Zelda (though not as much), I think strategically Nintendo handles its IP a lot better than most companies. At least they time their releases so that when Mario Game X comes out it's actually been a while since a similar Mario game was released. The list above is a list of highlights by the way. Here's the full Ubi lineup. There's some as yet untitled stuff in there.
