Did I waste 24 bucks?

Recommended Posts

i was rather addicted to fallout in a mmorpg kind of way. when it really came down to it, however, i just couldn't bring myself to actually care about the game after a while and it just felt like a complete waste of time.

also, the combat is needlessly unintuative and occasionally retareded re: lucky shot in the eye for 300, you die? I hate having to quicksave all the time just because shit like that happens.

i really really wanted to like fallout. certainly, i loved the instruction manual! i also generally enjoy a post-apocolyptic setting. Regardless, I did not care about the story or the basic lack of good plot structure. it just didn't make me care enough to finish it.

as well to respond to the person who thought I called them an idiot for hating raiden, you're being radically extreme with my sentence. Raiden's character seems like a pussy to Americans. I'll give that. To the Japanese, however, his archetype is very real and very popular. Many of their popular soaps and dramas have major characters in his vein. I play games through the eyes of the country that made it. Thus, I understood, emphasized with and liked Raiden. Certainly more than the Fallout Guy.

Fallout Guy was an American.

Its very understandable how many people dislike fallout, because your oppurtunities for failure and discontent are as abundant as success, its just open ended like that. Plus, since you create your own character in fallout, and your text choices and personality are all modifiable by the levels (the best leveling system in any game, in my opinion), wou become attached to the character because you really do make him or her, rather than being dragged around a pre-determined world.

I remember the first time playing fallout 2 was frustrating, but after I picked up again many years later, a few different decisions made the game completely different and enjoyable.

As for combat I think its very intuitive and strategic, but some bad situations do call for granny saving (just like any modern game). And granted, the plot is thin, but the game's whole purpose is open endedness. No real sweeping narrative can be crafted under those circumstances. Besides I don't mind sacrificing story for gameplay and atmosphere (I actually liked FFX, if you read my earliest post.

As for Metal Gear Solid, if you have played the first one (maybe you have, I'm not sure) you would begin to understand fan reaction to Raiden. The first game was so good, that making the sequel drop the baddass main character was unbelievable for fans. It doesn't matter that Raiden was a bitchy Swede, its the fact that Snake was replaced.

of course i played the first one. i love it. i cling to it. it was a better game.

i did like Raiden as a change of pace, however.

I will give that Fallout had a cool level-up system, but it didn't make me feel that attached to the character. wanting to get him a few more % in small weapons was a drive for a while but it doesn't hold interest for me the way, say, a real story will.

we just differ in opinion about the open endedness. I am a story freak. Very few exceptions to that other than maybe Doom and fighting games to some extent.

i say "to some extent" because fighting games where the character's backgrounds are well written and interwine with the rest tend to be well thought out overall. From Japan, anyway.

:shifty: ...I don't even want to start a discussion about fighting game stories.

MGS2 was very good from the gameplay perspective (On hard mode I found it to be way better than otherwise), but can you honestly say that its contrived story and ridiculous characters (Vamp??!?!) really have a leg up on Fallout, other than in their cinematic presentation?

i liked vamp. i thought his bisexuality made for an interesting plot point as well as a decent character. but that's just me.

i can honestly say i felt like MGS2 was far more satisfying and fun, whereas Fallout just seemed like an okay way to kill a few hours. like an mmorpg.

fallout and its sequel are, believe it or not, the only games I've started and never finished.

...to respond to the person...

I obviously interpreted your post to be bitchier that was intended. I do understand why he could be a popular character and I know about Japanese culture. Your post just implied, to me at least, that if you happened not to like Raiden, you just didn’t understand why you should.

I apologize for being radically extreme with your sentence.

If Raiden did happen to have any redeeming qualities, they were eclipsed by the fact that he replaced Snake. Like Manny said.

Your Haikus are lame.

Continuing sentences?

You are a cheat sir.

And so this post has some relevance to the topic. I found FFX too easy.

Ok, MGS2 was not a "thinker." It was fucking brain rot. Idiotic and contrived. There was no deep purpose, it was just painfully bad. And Raiden was a pansy. It's sad when the character with the mullet is the cool one.

Oh, my bad.

MGS2 sucks

The plot devours your brain

Worst ending ever.

FFX is a lot of fun, and for 24 bucks you can't really do much better (on the ps2).

It's a tad too linear, but the combat is deep enough to keep you interested for the 40-odd hours it takes to play through.

40 hours is pretty good for 24 bucks; give it a chance.

I'll never "get" MGS, there's barely even a game there.
