clyde Posted July 27, 2017 I want a single-payer system in the U.S. I think the ACA didn't do enough and isn't politically, fiscally or ethically defensible over time. I figured we could talk about single-payer a.k.a. Medicare for all a.k.a. HR.676 here. I don't typically read The Hill, but I'm curious to see what happens here as the senate enters a debate where I want single-payer to come up and be discussed as the only real viale option in the longterm. Couldn't he just force a vote on HR.676? http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/344038-gop-senator-forces-dems-to-vote-on-single-payer?amp
clyde Posted July 27, 2017 http://thehill.com/homenews/senate/344156-democrats-reject-gop-single-payer-amendment?amp I don't understand what the calculus is that tells Democrat Senators that they shouldn't vote for a single-payer amendment even if it's a political manuever by Republicans. They have to fake non-support in purple states? So doesn't that just make them against single-payer?
Cordeos Posted July 27, 2017 It was a really weird political maneuver. The whole thing is just a mess.

They have to fake non-support in purple states? So doesn't that just make them against single-payer? It's not a good-faith amendment. It's a poison pill meant to damage the Democrats politically, even just a little bit, and salvage some political capital from the failure of the BCRA, without actually risking that single-payer become a reality were it to pass. There is no advantage in voting "yes" on a good amendment to such a toxic bill, especially when Sanders has already announced that he's going to be introducing a single-payer bill that's untainted by the BCRA bullshit. Dewar Posted July 28, 2017 I think somewhere along the line McCain became the hero, or at least the one person left in Washington that seems to care about parliamentary procedure? He comes back so soon after surgery to vote for the debate to start (which he has a history of almost always voting to start,) doesn't like what he hears, and shuts it all down. YoThatLimp Posted July 28, 2017 Yeah, I don't know he definitely has his hands dirty on this one - thankfully he did vote 'No' on it though. This whole thing has been a total mess, Trump's Reality TV reality is seeping in here.
