Sno Posted April 7, 2013 Man, that boss fight in the frozen mine, that is a pretty terrible boss fight. Love how the shitty motion detection kept making my aim drift. Euugh.
miffy495 Posted April 9, 2013 Yeah, that boss (who I beat last night) had me looking in the options for ways to turn motion detection off. Surprise! None exist. I really feel like motion detection is the worst part of the 3DS. I have yet to see a single game use it in a way that I've enjoyed.
tegan Posted April 9, 2013 Motion detection made it much easier for me to use things like the Bow and the Slingshot in Ocarina of Time 3D, but it really didn't help much in that boss fight. Both because it seemed to keep changing where it thought the "center" position was and because it wasn't entirely clear whether aiming actually did anything or not. My shots almost always went right to the very bottom.
Sno Posted April 9, 2013 Finished the game. The boss fight with the group of boos was fidgety as hell, i got really annoyed with that one. I can also see how that one timed level right at the end could be super infuriating, but i did it in one try. Mario's model looked super weird in this game. That's a fine game, overall. I don't like the level breaks. The MP is more fun than i would have expected, i might go back to that.
Lu Posted April 9, 2013 Man, that boss fight in the frozen mine, that is a pretty terrible boss fight. Love how the shitty motion detection kept making my aim drift. Euugh. I just landed there and jeez, wall of frustration after all that has gone before. The worst thing about it is, after I break away all the ice and you have to shoot a bomb into the things mouth, I see the bomb go into his mouth, then I hear this goddamn error sound because apparently I didn't do it correctly? Whaaat?
tegan Posted April 9, 2013 If you shoot as soon as its mouth opens, it doesn't work. You have to wait a moment for some bizarre reason, and even then it might not work. There's really no clear reason as to why it will or won't count.
BigJKO Posted April 9, 2013 Has anyone else had some issues every once in a while where stuff like coins, dollar bills and especially hearts somehow pop through the geometry and are lost forever? FOREVER!
tegan Posted April 9, 2013 YES. It usually happens with coins for me.
mikemariano Posted April 18, 2013 I am in the second mansion and this game has officially become too long for me to complete any one mission during my ~45 minute train ride. I feel bad for Luigi every time he gets sprayed with water, dropped down a trap door, etc. I let out an audible gasp on my train for each indignity piled on Luigi. #yearofluigi
miffy495 Posted April 19, 2013 Wow, you're really taking your time with these. What are you doing in any one particular mission? I beat the game yesterday, and I think the most any mission ever took me was about 30 minutes. That one was an extreme outlier too. Granted, I didn't find all the gems, but I did get all the Boos and a fair amount of gems...
Sno Posted April 19, 2013 The big thing i had to come to grips with is that money doesn't actually matter at all in this game. That cut my times from 40 minutes to 20. Even if you're just casually collecting any cash that happens to be in your direct path, you'll definitely still have all the upgrades unlocked before the end of the game. mikemariano Posted April 19, 2013 Wow, you're really taking your time with these. What are you doing in any one particular mission? I beat the game yesterday, and I think the most any mission ever took me was about 30 minutes. That one was an extreme outlier too. Granted, I didn't find all the gems, but I did get all the Boos and a fair amount of gems... Boos and gems, Miffy. Boos and gems. I replayed the first mansion's first three levels many times, but still can't find the boos! And when starting a new mission, I ignore the obvious path I'm supposed to take in order to hunt for boos. And every time I find a new gem, I shake my head in shame because there is a "gap" in between the last gem I found and the current one, meaning I should have discovered a gem in between them. Luigi suffers so much; the least I can do is collect all the gems for him!
Lu Posted April 19, 2013 Life ain't nothin' but Boos and gems. Luigi's dance of victory is magnificent though! Finished it last week. I'll likely go back and get all the Boos, but after looking up the reward for all the gems, I decided to not do that unless I stumble upon them as I play. toblix Posted May 4, 2013 Okay, so all gems are discoverable the first time you pass them? I was thinking maybe I would have to come back later with more equipment or something.
Sno Posted May 4, 2013 There are some things in the first few levels of the first mansion that you have to go back to, but i think mostly everything else can be done in one run.
tegan Posted May 5, 2013 keep in mind that you won't necessarily be able to grab every gem as soon as you see it. Sometimes you'll have to do something in another room first. There's a particularly annoying one that show up in the first room you start in in one level, but can't grab until the very end.
mikemariano Posted July 1, 2013 Man, that boss fight in the frozen mine, that is a pretty terrible boss fight. Love how the shitty motion detection kept making my aim drift. Euugh. I'm finally returning to Luigi's Mansion after finishing Super Mario 3D Land. This boss battle is shockingly bad. I'm seriously about to give up and post in the Quitter's Club thread and I'd hate to do that!
miffy495 Posted July 1, 2013 Yeah, that one pushed me to the edge of quitting. I really don't have any idea what they were thinking with it.
Tanukitsune Posted July 1, 2013 It's pretty frustrating, but in some ways easier than the original game? But yeah, it sucked.
mikemariano Posted July 12, 2013 I finished Luigi's Mansion this morning and collected all the Boos. I'm not even close to collecting all the gems, though, and I don't know if the reward is worth it. I will likely have to resort to a walkthrough to find the 3-4 gems I have left to find in each mansion. They are all cleverly hidden, but it requires doing wildly different things for each gem. shammack Posted October 14, 2013 I finally beat this game tonight. The last non-boss level is kinda bullshit: forget about all the fun exploration-type stuff and just fight dozens of dudes while under a time limit. Classic sausage-fest ending. I liked the rest pretty well, though. I probably would have preferred if the game were a mansion or so shorter, or maybe just had fewer levels per mansion. Then maybe I would have finished the whole thing in one go instead of getting 90% of the way through and then burning out on it and not playing it again until Jake started talking about it on the podcast. I didn't collect all the boos or gems and I doubt I ever will.

SecretAsianMan Posted March 4, 2014 I had some money left in my eshop account and this game has been on my wishlist for a while, so I bought it a few days ago. Seemed like an appropriate way to close out the Year of Luigi. Just beat the first mansion last night. I played the first one on the GC and this feels like a nice return with some things improved and some things not. I love the exploration aspect but I prefer the single large mansion to the repeated mansions. I like the flashlight tools though, those are neat. I reread this thread and I'm not looking forward to these terrible bosses. I was actually quite annoyed with the first boss. I liked the puzzle aspect but I kept running into the little spiders and dropping the web ball, forcing me to restart that section over and over. Hearing that this is one of the BETTER bosses has me nervous.
